Discussion: Methods

As you build a research article summary in the
Discussion, you put together three key points: the study’s purpose, the
methods, and the findings. If the purpose answers the “Why?” question (Why was this study conducted?), then the methods answer the “How?” (How did the researchers conduct the study?).

For this Discussion, you summarize the methods of the sample research study and reflect on the process.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Post your initial 1- to 2-paragraph response that addresses the following:

• What was the method(s) used by the authors in the study? Summarize the methods in your own words and include a citation.
• Additionally, reflect on the process of summarizing the methods.
  Pose any questions and/or explain challenges that came up during the

The Mighty Motor Car Co. and the Novel Automobile Corp. manufacture cars and trucks in Country J. They recently entered into a noncompetition agreement with the approval of the Country J Ministry of Trade. The agreement provides (a) that Mighty will sell its vehicles in the United States and that Novel will not and (b) that Novel will sell its vehicles in the EU and that Mighty will not. Since the signing of this agreement, the Foreign Car and Truck Import Co., a U.S. importer of Novel cars and light trucks, is unable to obtain vehicles to import to the United States. As a consequence, it has brought suit against Novel in a U.S. court alleging that the agreement between Mighty and Novel violated the U.S. Sherman Antitrust Act. Novel has asked the court to dismiss the case for lack of subject-matter jurisdiction. Should it do so? Discuss.

For this assignment, imagine that you are an organizational change consultant who has been asked to propose intrinsic and extrinsic reward plans to an organization (of your choice). In your proposal, you will not only formulate the plans but also analyze their worth to the organization as part of the firm’s implementation of a new social responsibility change plan. That change plan will task employees with new or additional duties; thus the reward plans should aim to support employee attitude and behavior including increasing creativity and problem-solving skills.

Spector (2013) says this about reward plans: “Incentive pay, regardless of the specific design, is an extrinsic reward: a reward external to the individual and provided by the organization. Money is the most obvious and prevalent example of an extrinsic reward. Motivational theory tells us that extrinsic rewards, although powerful, may not be terribly effective in driving long‐term behavioral change” (p. 142).
