Week 4 – Regent

Regent University B.S. in Business has the right balance of business, managerial, and Christian leadership incorporated in its curriculum. Regent is raising the next generation of Christian leaders, and they are preparing them for war, not in the literal sense. Training teams, which is what Regent is accomplishing, “involves the components of a person performance: knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors”(Noe, 2010, p.279). Regent is providing the students with ammunition desperately needed, on how to tackle and approach the world obstacles through business or leadership, without losing yourself to worldly views. This is my second semester completing the online degree-specific portion, and I have to say honestly, I prefer an in-person session. Yes, we are in the information age, where technology is incorporated into our day to day lives, whether you’re at home, work, or school.

Although, I miss listening to the lecture, and learning the material in the more drawn-out form these eight-week accelerator courses. The online courses leave much to be desired; for instance, George Mason University, online courses have live virtual lectures/classrooms with professors than allow the students to engage and ask questions. Yes, I understand the purpose of online courses is to work remotely and get your degree all quicker, but I feel as though Regent is missing the bigger picture. These online classes, are sometimes required you to read over 100 pages a week; for one course, I feel as though students are not being set up for success. Regent has an opportunity to revitalize the online program and offer a live virtual learning course at a student request because I know not everyone will be able to access due to military deployments, jobs, family obligations, etc. As stated in Romans 12:2 “do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect”(ESV). Regent University must continue to strive for more innovation.

Sociology Reading Journal

ASA format. 12 point font double spaced. 1 page for each reading minimum.

2 total readings. 2 pages. 2 separate quotes. Each reading on separate page.

Reading theory is challenging, to say the least. It often requires multiple readings, “googling” terms you do not understand, and a general tenacity that can be difficult to muster. Journaling will help with this.

Directions:

  1. Read the requiring readings. (Webber – The Spirit of Communism, Marx and Engles – The Communist Manifesto)
  2. After you have read the piece, identify with a quote that you believe best summarizes the main argument, or one of the main arguments, of each piece.
  3. Title your journal entry with the author and title of the reading.
  4. Type the quote you chose at the top.
  5. Explain why you think this quote best summarizes the argument. This means you will write—in your own words— a paragraph or two on how you understand the piece and how the quote reflects that understanding.

MGT422 SLP Module 3

One of the biggest complaints among managers is the huge amount of time they have to spend in meetings. Ideally the purpose of meetings is to put everyone’s heads together to solve a problem or make a decision. But far too often they can lead to unproductive, time-wasting conversations and even conflict.

For this assignment, think about some recent meetings you’ve attended where a significant decision had to be made. Think carefully about how some of the problems regarding group decision making that were discussed in the background readings apply to what you’ve experienced. Then write a 2- to 3-page paper addressing the following issues:

  1. Are all voices equally heard, or are some people afraid to speak up? Are participants in the meeting afraid to contradict senior management?
  2. Is time spent at the meetings productive, or is a lot of time wasted?
  3. Are the decisions that are made solid ones? Or do they suffer from problems mentioned in the background materials such as groupthink?
  4. Are ideas expressed at meetings creative and original, or are original ideas discouraged?
  5. Based on what you’ve described in Questions 1–4 above, what kind of group decision-making process would you recommend be used in meetings you attend? Base your answer on readings from the background materials such as Sims (2002).

Psychoanalytic Theory

Doucment 2:

Respond to each of the following with a minimum of 75 words.

Number 1:

The article that I chose was created in 2018 and it took a look at, and discussed in more detail, the early study done by Ferenczi in 1928. Through his studies of Freud’s Psychoanalytic Theory, he went on to father the Object Relations Theory. While studying Freud’s Psychoanalytic Theory, he theorized that external traumas that happened in infancy and childhood disrupted the psychic development and left patients unprepared to deal with their next stage of life or life crisis (Eekhoff, 2018). He went on to elaborate more on Freud’s idea of projection as well. Ferenczi believed that infants could relate themselves to the world around them and then bring those ideas inward to help them learn from experience, as well as to help them protect themselves. Ferenczi also believed that defense mechanisms were necessary to help us cope with frustration and tolerate unbearable affects and emotions (Eekhoff, 2018). Current research studies align with the theories discussed by Ferenczi because defense mechanisms are still researched and brought to light in therapy to this day.

Number 2:

According to Kendra Cherry (October 13,2019) “The Influence of Psychoanalysis on the Field” (retrieved from https://www.verywellmind.com/what-is-psychoanalysis-2795246), defined psychoanalysis as a set of psychological theories and therapeutic techniques that have their origin in the work and theories of Sigmund Freud. It’s explained that the core idea at the center of psychoanalysis is the belief that all people posses unconscious thoughts, feelings, desires, and memories. The basic tenets of psychoanalysis includes the way that people behave is influenced by their unconscious drives.

The history of psychoanalysis explains how Sigmund Freud was the founder of psychoanalysis and the psychodynamic approach to psychology. Freud believed that the human mind was composed of three elements, the id, the ego, and the sulergo. Many of his observations and theories were based on clinical cases and case studies, making his findings difficult to generalized to a larger population. Freud’s theories changed how we think about the human mind and behavior and left a lasting mark on psychology and culture.

Article/ Benefits of nursing theory in nursing research

The article I selected integrates Myra Levine’s conservation model into a nursing research study that involves mitigating fatigue in cancer patients. Levine’s Conservation Model was selected to guide this study because it includes principles that help explain cancer-related fatigue and support exercise as a patient intervention for fatigue (Belcher, Bositis, Hall, McCorkle, Mock, St. Ours, Tillery, 2007). This article uses a descriptive approach to present the components of Levine’s model and details of the studies intervention and outcomes (Belcher et al., 2007). According to Belcher et al. (2007, pg. 4) “the purpose of the ongoing study described here was to determine the effects of a nurse-directed, moderate-intensity, home-based exercise program me to mitigate fatigue and maintain physical functioning in individuals receiving cancer treatment.” The results of this research study show that the patients who exercise regularly during cancer treatment conserved more energy and have less fatigue as compared to those that do not exercise. This article strongly supports the value of using a conceptual model as a framework for nursing research. In regards to the article selected, the benefits of using Levine’s conceptual framework is that it provided an organized structure for this study, it guided the development and testing of hypotheses, and it assisted in placing research findings within the context of science (Belcher et al., 2007).

Relationship between theory and research in nursing:

According to McEwen and Wills (2014), nursing has called for research to develop and confirm knowledge and for theory to organize it. Knowledge development is collective, and knowledge produced from separated research studies should be combined into a more comprehensive understanding of the subject. Research earns its value on expanding from other previous work. “Research gains its significance from the context within which it is placed- specifically from its theoretical context” (McEwen & Wills, 2014, pg. 432). Theoretical context is the structure and system of important concepts, theoretical propositions, and theory that comprise the current knowledge discipline. Theory is essential to guide and provide a framework to the research.

Personal and professional experiences

The evidence-based interventions learned through nursing research and organized by nursing theory can help improve patient outcomes, help to provide high quality care, reduce costs and eliminate practices that are not effective. Infection control is always a trending topic in hospitals nationwide. The last thing a patient wants when going to a hospital for treatment is a hospital-acquired infection (it’s the last thing the hospital wants to happen due to financial cost and having to report it). Nurses play a key role in helping to prevent illness before it happens by adhering to evidence-based infection-control policies. This includes keeping the healthcare environment clean, wearing personal protective clothing, using barrier precautions and practicing correct handwashing.

Thorough research and theory building provide various areas of knowledge with an opportunity to develop, and nursing is not an exception. For improvement of nursing services, adoption of advanced interventions into practice is required. Theories, in this case, provide directions for the process, which minimizes the risk of errors (McEwen & Wills, 2014). According to Moyle, Rickard, Chambers, and Chaboyer (2015), the Partnering with Patients Model of Nursing Interventions “provides a preliminary understanding of how complex nursing interventions can be developed, tested and subsequently adopted into practice” (p. 252). Hence, it facilitates research procedures.

The use of nursing models and theories in research makes it possible to make nursing science applicable for practice. Practitioners should always have an opportunity to implement the information they find in literature; otherwise, it becomes useless. The Partnering with Patients Model of Nursing Interventions encourages nurses to work with patients instead of simply providing them with services. As a result, this theory underlines the importance of ensuring patient’s self-determination and autonomy. Due to it, those factors that indicate patient’s optimal well-being are determined. The discussed model pays much attention to the creation, testing, and implementation of interventions, which leads to the integration of research into nursing interventions. In particular, their influence on patient outcomes is investigated and nursing-sensitive indicators are searched.

The benefits of nursing theory in research are recognized even by the Medical Research Council that recommends professionals to find a theory that supports their intervention before modelling it (Moyle et al., 2015). In my practice setting, the same approach is used, and all complex interventions are developed on the basis of nursing theories, which allows benefiting our patients. Theory and research in nursing are tightly connected since theories direct research and allow defining research questions needed to understand the subject.

1. Why the Partnering with Patients Model of Nursing Interventions is recommended as a basis for interventions?

2. What concepts of this theory can be used to develop research questions?
