Conducting Research in the Ashford Library

A peer reviewed journal or article is an article or journal that has been reviewed by experts in the field and deemed to be worth reading by other professionals. Typically this is an extensive process in which reviewers are carefully vetted for expertise and professional experience. In this assignment, you will have an opportunity to examine a peer reviewed article and apply what you have learned to a professional scenario or activity.

Please refer to the following tutorials for guidance on conducting scholarly research at the Ashford Library:

Step 1: New to Wikis?

If you are already familiar with wikis, you can skip to Step 2.

The first wiki was developed in 1995 and creation is most often attributed to Ward Cunningham. The primary uniqueness of wikis is that multiple users can collaborate on content and organizational structures of web-based content. A very famous Wiki is the massive online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, which is based on the Media Wiki software. If you are entirely new to the concept of a wiki, please review the video below [approximately four minutes long] and visit the site http://wikimatrix.org/ to compare some of the available wiki software (2007). Wikis in plain English. Available from YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dnL00TdmLY

Step 2: Review Literature about Wikis
This step will prepare you for addressing the Dilemma in Step 3 and ensure you can apply research to support learning in a technology-enhanced environment. You very likely have experience as a learner using wiki technology, such as reviewing pages from the aforementioned Wikipedia. However, have you read any research about when and why to use wikis effectively? Consider the following resources freely available through open-access journals online:

Deters, F., Cuthrell, K., Stapleton, J. (2010, March). Why wikis? Student perceptions of using wikis in online coursework. Journal of Online Learning and Teaching 6(1). Retrieved from http://jolt.merlot.org/vol6no1/deters_0310.htm

Johnson, L.M. & Sims, R. (2013, June). A case of wikis and contradictions: Activity systems, classroom community, and instructional design for collaborative online learning. Journal of Applied Instructional Design, 3(1), 19-31. Available from http://www.jaidpub.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Johnson-Sims-MAY2013.pdf

Next, use the Ashford University Library linked in our course to locate at least one more scholarly article about use of wikis in the classroom. The article needs to come from a peer reviewed source (e.g., Journal) and be a full-text article. Use this library tutorial for advanced searches to learn about searching for peer reviewed journals. Suggested search keywords are “wiki” and “instructional design”.

Step 3: Write a Response to the Dilemma

Consider hypothetically that you have a position as an instructional designer for a school, college, university, company, or a military group. In your position, you also manage a group of interns. Your supervisor asks you to develop training modules about best practices at your organization. James, an intern, suggests that you use a wiki to simplify the content maintenance. However, Pat, another intern, suggests that students completing the modules collaborate using a wiki as part of their course activities. Dara, your other intern, suggests that wikis are never a good idea and opposes their use entirely for training.

Construct a response (e.g., Letter, Email, Video) to your interns addressing the suggestions made. The response must explain your thoughts on the use of a wiki as an eLearning tool and discuss specific advantages and disadvantages of using a wiki for the training. Support your assertions in the letter by synthesizing and referring to the Deters, Cuthrell and Stapleton (2010) and the Johnson and Sims (2013) articles as well as the article you located from the Ashford University Library and any personal experience you have with using wikis. For the citation of the article you selected from the Ashford University Library, please be sure to include the database where you retrieved the article. If you select a video option, a transcript or closed captioning is required.

INDIVIDUAL SUMMARY: DARE PROGRAM **HALF DONE JUST NEED HELP FINISHING IT**

I HAVE DONE THE MAJORITY OF THE PAPER BUT HAVE TO GO TO WORK.

THE PAPER IS ABOUT THE DARE PROGRAM.

IT’S DUE 7:00PM EST ON 4/19/2018 TO BE TURNED IN ONLINE!!!!!! I CAN BE MAYBE AN HOUR LATE TO TURNING IT IN BUT NO MORE THAN THAT WITHOUT RISKING A SEVER GRADE DROP!!!! PLEASE HELP!!!!!

I HAVE ATTACHED WHAT I HAVE WRITTEN SO FAR, MY GROUPS POWERPOINT, AND OUR REFERENCE LIST. PLEASE ONLY WRITE ABOUT THE DARE PROGRAM. THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW ARE FOR HOW THE PAPER NEEDS TO BE WRITTEN

INDIVIDUAL SUMMARY GUIDELINES

For
this assignment, you are to prepare a written summary 3-5 pages in
length (double-spaced, 12-point font, 1-inch margins) describing your
own conclusions, thoughts, and insights about the policy analysis your
group performed. The purpose of this assignment is to allow group
members to demonstrate their individual mastery of the material, in
order to offset the heavy point allocation of the group assignment. This
assignment is worth 50 points.

Students should address the
following questions in this writing assignment. Do not number your
answers; instead, be sure that each question is answered sufficiently in
a free-flowing essay format.

1. What is the policy you
researched? Please provide a brief overview. What “expert conclusion”
did your group reach about your assigned policy? Does this match your
own conclusion about the policy? Why or why not? Give specific examples.

2.
Were you familiar with this policy before taking this class? What is
the most important thing you learned about your policy that you did not
know before taking this class? Did your research this semester change
your initial opinion or understanding of this policy? Why or why not?
Please describe.

3. What is the most important thing you think
policy makers should know about this policy, and why? What is the most
important thing you think the general public should know about this
policy, and why? Be specific.

Tips for Writing Your Essay

Papers
should use the “roadmap”approach: (1) tell me what you are going to
say, (2) say it, then (3) tell me what you just said. To assist with
content organization, all papers must include the following subject
headings:

Introduction—preceding the introductory paragraph

  • This paragraph must include your thesis statement (E.g., “The purpose of this essay is to…”)

Expert Conclusion—preceding the discussion of Question 1

Lessons Learned—preceding the discussion of Question 2

Informing Others—preceding the discussion of Question 3

Conclusion—preceding the concluding paragraph

  • This paragraph must include a restatement of your thesis statement.

Before submitting your assignment, check that you have:

  • Developed a clear thesis statement that is included in the first paragraph and restated in the concluding paragraph
  • Used the subject headings identified above
  • Included your name
  • Included page numbers
  • Answered all questions fully

Finally, some students have asked about whether references should be attached. The answer is yes.

Your paper should cite references the same way you would in any normal

research paper. Your attached reference list should include all the

references you cite in your Individual Summary. If the references in

your Individual Summary are all from your group reference list, it’s

okay to just attach that full list if it’s easier for you to do so

(rather than editing out references you don’t use in your paper). If you include new references/citations, though, please add those to your reference list so I know what you’re citing.

AMH 2010 Defending Slavery

WRITING ASSIGNMENT # 3B: Defending Slavery

Before the emergence
of cotton as a primary crop in the south, the invention of the cotton
gin, and territorial expansion southward and westward, slavery appeared
to be on the decline. These factors, coupled with a rising demand for
cotton by the British textile industry, revived the South’s agricultural
economy.

Although cotton could
be grown with or without slavery, the expansion of cotton cultivation
and slavery occurred together. When slavery was challenged on moral
grounds, southerners chose to defend their “peculiar institution,” as in
the words of John C. Calhoun “a positive good.”

INSTRUCTIONS:

This writing
assignment will require you to analyze and discuss primary and secondary
sources that relate to the institution of slavery in the United States.

PREPARE AND SUBMIT:

Write a well-organized essay, a minimum of 700 words
(but not limited to), including supporting details from the
documents/textbook/other sources, in which you analyze and discuss the
material that has been assigned by addressing the following question:

Most southerners
defended slavery, even though they were not part of the “Plantation
Aristocracy.” According to the readings that you have completed, discuss
why they supported slavery, and your response to the claims made by its
supporters, and explain why it was easier to end the slave trade than
to end slavery itself.

Reminders

  • Paragraphs in an
essay are not numbered. Any questions that are associated with an
assigned reading are there to serve as a guide for your discussion.
  • Your discussion should incorporate all of the information from the documents and or textbook, and outside sources as one essay.
  • Students are required to research and incorporate into their discussions additional sources that relate to the content. Recommendations can be found in at the end of the textbook chapter in Additional Reading.
  • All statements must be supported and all sources must be identified and cited, and included in your reference list. This also applies to the textbook. Failure to do so constitutes Plagiarism,
and the college has strict policies and penalties for failure to
comply. Under the Resources, you will find links to sites that review
how to format a paper or essay. I recommend that students use APA or Chicago Style to format their essay. Students should ask their instructor which format style they prefer you to use.
  • Proofread your work.
Make sure that you have looked for all of the spelling and grammatical
errors and corrected them, and that you have organized your work into
    coherent paragraphs.
  • Prepare the assignment as a Word Document, double-spaced and using a standard font of 12 points.
  • Submit via the Dropbox as an ATTACHMENT. Any work that is submitted directly into the box will be graded as a 0.

Point Value: 100

Grading Criteria:

  • Analysis and discussion (60%)
  • Support for discussion (30%)
  • Organization (10%)

Reminder:
All written work must comply with standard English rules, such as
proper capitalization, grammar, and spelling. The assignment must be
submitted by the deadline listed in the calendar.

Complete Marketing Assignment NO PLAGIARISM

Ethics and Pricing

People feel better when they think they are getting a great bargain when they shop. Knowing this, some retailer’s markup items above the traditional retail price and then offer a 60 percent discount. If they had simply discounted the normal retail price by 20 percent, the resulting “sale price” would have been the same. One retailer says that he is just making shoppers happy that they got a great deal when he inflates the retail price before discounting.

Significantly marking up prices in order to offer “deep discounts” is not an unethical pricing practice per se, but it may be considered misleading advertising. The retailer is not really reducing its profits as a result of offering the sale price, even though a 60 percent discount implies a financial sacrifice on the part of the retailer for the benefit of the customer.

The situation described above could, perhaps, be considered a sales promotion that uses deception or manipulation.

  1. As a consumer think of a place you like to shop at because of the so-called great bargains, coupons, cash back and or discounts they offer.
  2. From your shopping experience explain if the discounts you received on your purchase you feel was a bargain deal or do you feel you overpaid.
  3. Did you believe the retailer is sacrificing revenue for you the consumers’ benefit?
  4. Why or Why not?
  5. Do you find their sales practices to be ethical and beneficial to the consumer or perhaps unethical and misleading?

The requirements below must be met for your paper to be accepted and graded:

  • Write between 500 – 750 words (approximately 2 – 3 pages) using Microsoft Word.
  • Attempt APA style, see example below.
  • Use font size 12 and 1” margins.
  • Include cover page and reference page.
  • At least 60% of your paper must be original content/writing.
  • No more than 40% of your content/information may come from references.
  • Use at least two references from outside the course material, preferably from EBSCOhost. Text book, lectures, and other materials in the course may be used, but are not counted toward the two reference requirement.
  • Reference material (data, dates, graphs, quotes, paraphrased words, values, etc.) must be identified in the paper and listed on a reference page.

Reference material (data, dates, graphs, quotes, paraphrased words, values, etc.) must come from sources such as, scholarly journals found in EBSCOhost, online newspapers such as The Wall Street Journal, government websites, etc. Sources such as Wikis, Yahoo Answers, eHow, etc. are not acceptable.

Discussion: Standardized Coding Systems

As a result of the fragmented nature of the health care system, professionals in various specialty areas of medicine have developed their own unique sets of terminology to communicate within that specialty. In the past, limited attention has been given to codifying practices in order for them to be understood and utilized across disciplines or through different information technology systems. The implementation of a federally mandated electronic medical records system, therefore, poses a challenge to nursing professionals and others who must be prepared to utilize standardized codes for the new system. Why are coding standards important for promoting consistent, high-quality care?

According to Rutherford (2008, para. 15), “Improved communication with other nurses, health care professionals, and administrators of the institution in which nurses work is a key benefit of using a standardized nursing language.” In this Discussion you consider the reasoning behind and the value of standardized codification.

To prepare

  • Review the information in Nursing Informatics: Scope and Standards of Practice. Determine which set of terminologies are appropriate for your specialty or area of expertise.
  • Reflect on the importance of continuity in terminology and coding systems.
  • In the article, “Standardized Nursing Language: What Does It Mean for Nursing Practice?” the author recounts a visit to a local hospital to view its implementation of a new coding system. One of the nurses commented to her, “We document our care using standardized nursing languages but we don’t fully understand why we do” (Rutherford, 2008, para. 1). Consider how you would inform this nurse (and others like her) of the importance of standardized nursing terminologies.
  • Reflect on the value of using a standard language in nursing practice. Consider if standardization can be limited to a specialty area or if one standard language is needed across all nursing practice. Then, identify examples of standardization in your own specialty or area of expertise. Conduct additional research using the Walden Library that supports your thoughts on standardization of nursing terminology.

By Day 3

Post an explanation of why nurses need to document care using standardized nursing languages and whether this standardization can be limited to specialty areas or if it should be across all nursing practice. Support your response using specific examples from your own specialty or area of expertise and using at least one additional resource from the Walden Library.

Public Relations in The Persuaders, writing assignment help

Public Relations in The Persuaders

For this assignment, I’d like you to watch a documentary about public relations and advertising called “The Persuaders.” You can watch online here, or if you have access to Amazon Prime, I believe you can find it there as well in one of the PBS Frontline seasons. And yes–I will definitely be able to tell in your response whether you’ve watched the entire film or not.

After watching, I’d like you to write a 400-word response that focuses on the person or segment of the film you found most surprising or interesting. As an overall question, I’d also like you to consider the ways in which excessive advertising and PR may or may not lead to a more materialistic, consumer culture in our country. According to some more dire media critics, advertising creates a situation in which we are consumers first (catering to our own selfish wants) and citizens (catering to the greater good) later. How does this celebration of individual, mostly false needs through advertising affect our society when the average person sees somewhere between 3,000 and 5,000 ads per day? When we live in a place where problems are seen as being solved by simply buying a product, do we also end up living in a place where our values are dictated by what we buy (or choose not to buy) as well?

To give you a few places to go if you’re feeling stuck, here some interesting points brought up on PBS’ site about the program:

  • What surprised you in the descriptions of how much demographic information marketers have about potential customers? What kinds of information would you be willing to share about yourself or your family in order to: enter a contest? Get a discount? Would you be willing to reveal your name, address and phone number? What music you listen to or your favorite snacks? The grades on your last report card? How much your parents earn? What medications people in your family take? What kinds of information would you want to keep private and why?
  • In “The Persuaders,” marketer Kevin Roberts uses the term “lovemarks” to identify brands to which people are loyal even when devotion is not logical. Are there brands (or music) to which you are devoted? When you stop to think about it, is your loyalty to any particular brand logical or a “lovemark?” If purchasing a particular brand isn’t logical, why would you (or other people) do it?
  • Advertising executive Douglas Atkins argues that purchasing branded merchandise now provides that same sense of belonging that was once provided by community institutions like schools, churches, civic groups, or fraternal orders. What provides you with a sense of belonging or identity? What role, if any, does marketing play in what you identify with or where you hang out the most?
  • Political consultant Frank Luntz tells his clients that, “80 percent of our life is emotion and only 20 percent is intellect. I am much more interested in how you feel than how you think.” Contrast this with Thomas Jefferson’s notion that democracy requires an “informed citizenry.” What is the potential impact of Luntz’s political strategy recommendations on the health of democracy?

  • “The Persuaders” points out that there are laws governing truth in advertising for products and services, but that “politicians can legally say whatever they want.” Should political ads be governed by the same kinds of laws that govern product ads? Why do you think there aren’t such laws?
