Myths and reality of crime

Myths and Reality of Crime

As we learn in the video, Crimes of the Powerful (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., our justice system tends to focus on street crime, often ignoring much more significant problems such as white-collar, corporate, and state crime. The video also discusses euthanasia, although the point of this reference is to illustrate how the law can be used as a tool for social change. The video also discusses moral values with a focus on media coverage of harm to children. Laws have changed in direct response to these incidents and the resulting media coverage. In effect, this coverage becomes an engine for social change. The video ends with a discussion of crime theory, reminding us that many criminological theories fall short when applied to people with wealth and high status.

Write a paper discussing the myths and realities of crime. Please elaborate on the following points in your essay:

  • Imagine asking 100 strangers to describe a criminal. Predict whether those descriptions would be likely to focus on street criminals, or the variety of topics covered in this video.
  • Describe how society defines crime. Do not provide a definition – instead, explain how the definition is reached.
  • Discuss how society decides what to define as a crime.
  • Present a clear statement about a particular crime, something we know to be absolutely true. Illustrate how we know that this is an accurate statement.
  • Present an example of a widely held myth or misconception about crime and society. Determine how we know that this is a myth. Explain why this myth is so difficult to abandon.

The paper must be three to four pages in length and formatted according to APA style. You must use at least two scholarly resources other than the textbook to support your claims and sub-claims. Cite your resources in text and on the reference page. For information regarding APA samples and tutorials, visit the Ashford Writing Center, within the Learning Resources tab on the left navigation toolbar, in your online course.

Algorithm Paper

(SEE ATTACHED INSTRUCTIONS)

Understanding algorithms:

Find an article(s) that discusses how a company, an organization, or

government agency uses an algorithm for a specific purpose (for example, for marketing to

consumers, or to solve a specific social problem). Explain the purpose and implications of the

algorithm’s usage in a 4 to 6 page (double-spaced) essay; paper should be an analysis and

critique of algorithm’s use, using course readings for support in your arguments. Must include

reference page and in text citations.

I have chosen the following topic for this project:

I am focusing on Pinterest’s algorithm, the “Smart Feed”.

Here are some links on the topic (You may include your own as well):

I want to analyze Pinterest’s algorithm, because I feel that it can be improved. As a user of Pinterest, I don’t feel they are optimizing their full potential as social media and influencer marketing platform. A majority of articles I found talk about optimizing Pinterest and most it’s issues related to accuracy.

Unit 2 Discussion Board Drug Offenders: Jail, Treatment, or Both

The Discussion Board (DB) is part of the core of online learning. Classroom discussion in an online environment requires the active participation of students and the instructor to create robust interaction and dialogue. Every student is expected to create an original response to the open-ended DB question as well as engage in dialogue by responding to posts created by others throughout the week. At the end of each unit, DB participation will be assessed based on both level of engagement and the quality of the contribution to the discussion.

At a minimum, each student will be expected to post an original and thoughtful response to the DB question and contribute to the weekly dialogue by responding to at least two other posts from students. The first contribution must be posted before midnight (Central Time) on Friday of each week. Two additional responses are required after Friday of each week. Students are highly encouraged to engage on the Discussion Board early and often, as that is the primary way the university tracks class attendance and participation.

The purpose of the Discussion Board is to allow students to learn through sharing ideas and experiences as they relate to course content and the DB question. Because it is not possible to engage in two-way dialogue after a conversation has ended, no posts to the DB will be accepted after the end of each unit.

Scenario:

You are running for an elected position as a state representative for your district. Part of your potential constituent’s concerns includes the newly formed juvenile pretrial program for diversion of first time nonviolent drug offenders. The community wants to know where the representative candidates stand on the issue of juvenile drug offender pretrial diversion and why. They do not understand why they should have to pay for treatment of young offenders who they see as hopeless cases that will never have anything to offer society. Your turn has arrived to speak on this topic.

Please include answers in your main posting for the following questions. You must provide meaningful feedback to the main postings of at least two of your classmates:

  • Why should the community support the pretrial diversion of juvenile drug offenders?
  • Should they be given any more consideration than adult drug offenders? Explain your answer.
  • Should drug offenders who have committed other crimes while intoxicated or looking for drug money be treated differently?
  • What should the criminal justice system do with these offenders, and why should it be done?

In your own words, please post a 3-5 paragraph response to the Discussion Board and comment on other postings.

Corporate Law, assignment help

Your company represents Sony. Sony is interested in acquiring a theme park chain in the United States so it can emulate the successes of The Walt Disney Company and Universal Pictures in owning theme parks where it can cross-promote films, artists, and related merchandise.

Your managing partner has asked you to research two possible options: Six Flags Entertainment Corporation, which trades as SIX on the New York Stock Exchange, and Sea World Parks and Entertainment, which trades as SEAS on the New York Stock Exchange. Perform research on each company.

Draft a memo to the managing partner in which you: (1) Make a recommendation as to which target, SIX or SEAS, would be the best target for Sony; (2) Discuss which option would be better for Sony to pursue – a merger or an acquisition – of the company you’ve chosen; and (3) outline the process that Sony would have to take to acquire a majority position in that company.
