The formation of a secure attachment to a caretaker is probably the single most important psychosocial task of infancy and early childhood. Studies show that whether a child is securely or insecurely attached to their parent or another caretaker determines their behavior in new situations, and that deprivation of attachment can have lasting harmful effects.

Discuss secure and/or insecure attachment, possibly with examples you’ve seen of healthy attachment, or attachment in cases where the caregiver is somehow emotionally unresponsive or inconsistent in responsiveness. How did it happen and what was the result? Have you also seen or heard of examples of children who were victims of abuse, neglect, or indifference?
