Conduct a windshield survey to identify a population and its primary health concern. Develop a 3–5-page report that explains demographic changes for a population and describes the health disparities and social determinants of health that can affect the population.

  As the population of the United States grows more diverse, the health care workforce must increase awareness of cultural differences and the overall shift in the demographics of the entire population. To provide high-quality health care to a community or population, health workers and educators must be competent in their understanding of the relevant characteristics of its ethnic or cultural groups.   Windshield Surveys

  A windshield survey helps you create a portrait of the people who live within a specific neighborhood or community. This is an inexpensive, time-efficient way to assess and better understand a community and the people who live within that community. Understanding the demographics of a community will help you determine the kinds of health-related issues that are likely to exist, so you can plan the most appropriate types of wellness programs, health education, and disease prevention.

Preparation

Over the past few years, leadership for the health care organization for which you work has noticed a distinct change in the population served by the organization. Leadership wants to make sure they are addressing the needs of this population. You have been asked to participate on an interdisciplinary team that is charged with learning how the population has changed and what needs to be done within the organization to develop a wellness education program that will target the needs and concerns of the population. Your first step in this process is to conduct a windshield survey and report your findings back to your team.

A windshield survey is an inexpensive, time-efficient way to assess and better understand a community and the people who live within that community. Understanding the demographics of a community will help you determine the health-related issues that are likely to exist so you can plan the most appropriate types of wellness programs, health education, and disease prevention programs. Windshield surveys are done by making visual observations of a neighborhood or community while driving; hence the name. This type of survey lets you observe the housing conditions, use of open spaces, shopping, schools, types of transportation, human services, protective services, and other aspects of the overall daily life of a community.

Before you start, you need to identify the boundaries of the neighborhood or community you plan to observe. For the purposes of this course, you should keep the size of the area to no more than 2–3 square miles. The area should be large enough for you to gather relevant information, but small enough that your observation does not take you more than 1–2 hours. With this size, it is not necessary to use a car to complete the survey; you can also walk or bike. Whichever method you use, be mindful of your personal safety. It may be helpful to map out the route you will take ahead of time. It can also be helpful (and safer) to have another person do the driving while you observe and make notes.

Once you are on the route, start making observations right away. Stop frequently to write down notes. A template is provided in the Required Resources to help you document your observations.

The timing of your observation can be important in helping you focus on specific items. If possible, consider conducting your survey more than once at different times of the day. For example, if you make your observations too early in the morning, you may miss things that take place later in the day that provide a different perspective of the neighborhood. It is also important to be as objective as possible when making your observations.

Requirements

• Conduct the windshield survey, using the template located in the Required Resources for this assessment.
• Use the template as a guide to write a report for your team. If possible, look at other written documents used within your organization. How are they formatted? Follow that format as closely as possible, making sure you still use APA guidelines for your in-text references, citations, and reference page.

Based on your observations and notes from your survey experience, write a report that includes the following:

• Describe, briefly, the neighborhood or community you observed (overall condition, types of spaces and businesses, evidence of services, and so forth).
• Describe a vulnerable or diverse population you observed living within the neighborhood or community.

Now you will need to do some research on the population you described:

• Explain how the demographics for the population have changed over the past 5–10 years. Note: This information should be readily available through the United States Census Bureau, similar state Web sites, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, or other professional sites. Be sure your information is current.
• Describe the most prevalent health risks for the population. For example, if your population is senior citizens, then the health risks might be diabetes and loss of mobility. Include statistics on the health risks, such as frequency of occurrence in the population and number of deaths per year in the population.
• Identify the health disparities and social determinants of health that can affect the population. In other words, what will you need to overcome to develop a successful health promotion and disease prevention program for the population?

Your completed assessment should be 3–5 pages in length, not including the title page and reference page. Support your information with references to at least three professional, scholarly, or government resources, and follow current APA guidelines for your in-text citations and references.

Many managers do not understand the various ways that interest rates can affect business decisions. For example, if your company decided to build a plant with a 30-year life and short-term debt financing (renewed annually), the cost of the plant could skyrocket if interest rates were to return to their previous highs of 12% to 14%. On the other hand, locking into high, long-term rates could be very costly also with a long period when low short-term interest rates were to be available. As you can see, the ability to know your economic environment and its impact on projected interest rates can be crucial to making good financing decisions.

Describe two to three macroeconomic factors that influence interest rates in general. Explain the effects of each factor on interest rates.

Now think about the industry in which you are employed or one in which you have past experience. To what macroeconomic factors is your industry most sensitive?

Describe two contemporary factors that seem to be impacting your industry today, and identify their impacts on the interest rates experienced within your chosen industry.

Introduction

Whenever you make an argument in an academic context, you need to be able to engage with what has been said before you entered the scene. Summary, therefore, is a fundamental skill for academic discourse. For this assignment, you will practice this skill by summarizing an argumentative text and responding by making your own argument about the topic.

Keep in mind that you will be writing about the same topic for the rest of the semester, so be sure to choose something you are interested in pursuing in-depth.

2. Read the article closely. As you read, make annotations. Underline key passages and make notes in the margins.

3. Reread the article. This time, as you read, write brief 1-2 sentences summaries of each paragraph or section of the article.

4. Once you have written your mini-summaries, bring these together into a 1-1½ page summary of the article as a whole. Be sure to compare your summary to the original text to make sure you are not misrepresenting the author’s position.

5. Write a 1-1½ page response to the article which states a claim about the topic in relation to the article’s claim. If you agree with the argument made in the article, extend the argument by articulating reasons and evidence (not cited by the author) to support the claim. If you disagree, provide reasons and evidence explaining why you found the claim unconvincing. (Note: this may require you to do some secondary research. Be sure to cite any additional sources you end up using.)

Submission Instructions

The essay should be in MLA formatting (including in-text citations and a works cited page), double spaced, using 12 point Times New Roman font. The final draft should be 2-3 pages (500-750 words). Upload a complete draft of the essay to the Peer Review Workshop for Project 1 by Friday. After receiving feedback, upload a revised draft to the Project 1 assignment by Wednesday.

As an entrepreneur, you want to start a business that will operate globally. You know that the first step is to consider drafting a business plan to organize all of your ideas. For this assignment, you will be submitting a business plan for your imaginary business. For research purposes, you can choose any state or country for the location of your business—be sure to consider how international operations will impact business regulations and ethics. Your business can be headquartered in the U.S. and operate internationally or headquartered in a foreign country and operate internationally, your choice. Your business plan should include the following:

• Introduction of the proposed business/executive summary
  • The executive summary is often considered the most important section of a business plan. This section briefly tells your reader where your company is, where you want to take it, and why your business idea will be successful. If you are seeking financing, the executive summary is also your first opportunity to attract a potential investor’s interest.
  • The executive summary should highlight the strengths of your overall plan and therefore be the last section you write. However, it appears first in your business plan.
• Identify and describe the type of business entity that is best for your business
  • Examples may include: partnership, limited liability company, corporation, etc. (For purposes of this assignment, you should NOT choose a sole proprietorship for your business entity.)
  • Defend your choice of business entity (this may include advantages/disadvantages of the selected type of business entity based on your business concept).
• Describe the specific legal steps needed to be followed to successfully start the business.

• A draft of a valid contract with a vendor, supplier, customer, etc. that illustrates all elements of a contract and takes into consideration some of the topics discussed in Modules 6 and 7.
• Explain potential ethical considerations for your business, including any social responsibility plans or attitudes that your business will embrace in the host country
• Describe a possible disagreement that could be encountered among the partners or investors and shareholders. Recommend potential resolutions (referring back to the formal documents, such as the articles of incorporation or the partnership agreement).
  • Examples could include the introduction of a new product line, borrowing money for expansion, an advertising campaign, etc. in the host country.
• Determine how the business would be terminated if the disagreement between the board of directors, shareholders, or partners could not be resolved.

Your well-written plan should be 8-10 pages in length (in APA writing style), not including the title or references pages. Headings and subheadings may help you organize your work. BACKGROUND OF THE TOPIC:

Do you care about why a firm engages in a particularly socially conscious endeavor? Does it matter to you that a firm may choose to sponsor a particular event because it will result in good press? Are you actually more likely to purchase a product or service from a company because it sponsored an event you support? The LaSalle Bank sponsors the Chicago Marathon each year. Might you be more likely to use that bank because it supports the marathon? Though, at first blush, this might seem a question of slight import, the amount of money spent on corporate promotions on an annual basis can be exponential. The economic impact of an event like the Chicago Marathon can mean more than $100 million per event for a city. If you do not really notice the sponsor or if the sponsorship does not have an impact on your consumer, employment, or investment decisions, then wouldn’t t that be critical information for the bank to know when deciding whether to sponsor the event in the future? Or, on the contrary, do you believe that at least part of the bank’s decision to support the marathon has nothing to do with its ultimate impact on you as a stakeholder but instead with the simple fact that the bank wishes to support the event? If the latter, what justification can you imagine the bank uses when explaining the expenditure to its stockholders?

  • Acceptable/credible sources include: Academic journals and books, industry journals, and the class textbook. You could use credible business website sources in addition to these, but avoid Wikipedia and Google. These are academic papers that need to include scholarly research.
• Using your textbook is highly recommended to demonstrate that you have read the required material.
