Here’s What Happened . . .

After your report was presented to the Centervale chief of police, he realized there is a need for training for law enforcement officials. Using the Simpson case as the basis, a proposal was presented and approved by the mayor to fund a special project.

You have been asked to produce a written training curriculum to educate the trainers of Centervale’s law enforcement officials about dealing with crime victims. The chief has asked you to cover both stranger violence and intimate violence. Your curriculum will supply trainers with information that would assist them in training new recruits, first responders, and detectives.

Here’s What You Need to Do . . .

  • Prepare three short scenarios that could be used as training material. In the training material, include the three areas of stalking, intimate violence, and stranger violence.
  • Following each scenario, generate questions that the trainers could present. Be sure to offer answers to these questions, with support, as a handy guide for the trainers.
  • Finally, design a summary for the trainers that they can use to end their training. The summary should:
    • Highlight the differences between criminology and victimology and why it is important for law enforcement officials to have a basic knowledge of both. Use examples from your created scenarios as support. Identify the relevant theories that pertain to violence against women. How can law enforcement make use of these facts?
    • Explain the importance of law enforcement learning more about proper treatment of victims in order to ensure the system does not revictimize them. Consider how interviews, order of protection service, time until arrest, safety planning, and lethality assessments play into this treatment.
  • Create a curriculum:
    • Develop three to five questions for each scenario. Focus on relevant victimology or criminology theories, victims’ rights, lethality assessments, and proper treatment of victims.
    • Develop potential answers for those questions, including the reasoning behind those answers. Hypothesize how past inadequacies in victims’ rights, as they pertain to law enforcement, might have led to different endings to the scenarios.
    • Predict the danger level for each victim and connect to the necessary actions of the advocate or the detective that will come from this alert.
    • Create a solution that would properly treat victims in order to ensure the system does not revictimize them. In creating a solution, consider these questions:
      • What can you recommend should be done for the victim?
      • What can you recommend should be done to the suspect?
      • What resources are available to assist law enforcement in working with victims?

Option 1) The graphic design shop where you work as the account manager is doing well. Just last year the owner hired three new designers and a receptionist, bringing the total number of employees to 14. But with growth comes certain headaches, and one of them is figuring out how to regulate employees’ Internet use. Currently, employees can download anything they want from the Internet and view any website they wish.
The owner’s IT person has alerted him to several problems. One is that the designers are downloading any and all software that they think sounds “cool” – even software in beta versions that sill have a lot of kinks. As a result, their computers lock up or malfunction and the IT person has to spend hours troubleshooting the problem to get it resolved.
Two, there is concern over what Internet sites employees are viewing, specifically those that are inappropriate for the workplace. Overall, the IT person is worried about security breaches resulting from these downloads, inappropriate website visits, and other Internet activities.
It’s time for a policy to be developed governing Internet-use and your boss things you’re just the person to help write it. Your assignment is to study the current wisdom on the workplace Internet policies and send your findings to your boss and the IT person as a short report, including a proposed Internet-use policy that might be implemented.
Option 2) As a Senior Buyer as Darcy’s, a national department store, Sasha Warner manages the buyers in the eastern U.S. region. You’re currently working under her as a sale co-op student. Option 3) You work for the owner of three local coffee and tea shops, one of which opened a few months ago. The newest one has already developed quite a nice, regular clientele, mostly those in or near the neighborhood who want an alternative to the big-coffee-chain experience, but your boss things its sales need a bump. She is considering holding an in-store promotion at the coffee shop – her first ever. Since she knows you’re an Internet whiz, she turns to you for help. “How do you run one of these events?” she wants to know. “How much do they cost? Are they worth the effort and expense? What are the options? Do such promotions have lasting effects? How can I maximize the results?”
You turn to the internet and find a lot of great stuff about in-store promotions, so much, in fact, that you decide to present your findings to your boss in writing. Tell her what she needs and wants to know in a clear, well organized report. Having the information in writing will also be helpful if she wants to share it with other employees. Be sure she can go to your sources and read more if she wants to.
Option 4) Many managers today are realizing that there really is something distinctive about “Gen Y,” or “Millennial,” employees (the children of “baby boomers” – who were themselves children of the World War II generation). Find a real client or invent a realistic company to use as your client. Then review the literature on Gen Y employees and write your client a report in which you describe the distinctive traits of this segment of the workforce and recommend ways to recruit, manage, and retain them.
Option 5) Your company does not offer flexible spending accounts (FSAs) for its employees. Your boss wonders if your company (you pick the name) should. Are FSAs a good idea for businesses and employees? Prepare a report for your boss in which you analyze the advantages and disadvantages of FSAs so that she can decide whether to offer FSAs to your employees.

For this assignment, you will have to answer some purely conceptual questions, as well as some numerical problems. For conceptual questions, make sure to thoroughly explain your answers and to cite specific readings from the required background materials to explain your answers.   1. Suppose you own a pet shop. Your sales are decent but a marketing consultant tells you that you could increase your sales and be able to charge a higher price if you spend some money on local television ads. If the consultant is right, will advertising lead to an increase in quantity demanded? Or a shift in the demand curve? Both? Neither? Explain your answer and make sure to cite at least one of the required readings in your answer.
  2. You are the owner of a furniture factory. You normally produce 100 pieces of furniture a day because that is how much you can produce given the amount of qualified workers in your town and the amount of reasonably priced wood that you can purchase locally. Then one day you get an order from a large national retail chain who wants to purchase 200 pieces of furniture a day from you. You are hesitant, as you will have to pay higher wages to get some qualified workers to move to your town. You also will need to pay higher prices for wood because you will no longer be able to rely solely on local suppliers and will have to spend more on shipping wood from other towns. But you drive a hard bargain and the retail chain agrees to pay one and a half times your normal price. Does this situation describe a change in quantity supplied? A shift in the supply curve? Both? Neither? Explain your answer and make sure to cite at least one of the required readings in your answer.
  3. Suppose marijuana has just been legalized in your state. Nobody in your home town wants to start a marijuana business, as this would be too much of a stigma. But being an MBA student, you know a good business opportunity when you see one and decide to take a stab. Shortly after starting up your business, you gain a loyal following of customers and start raking in some steep profits. However, the local government decides that they want a cut of your profits and starts charging a 20% sales tax on marijuana. Do you think this would lead to a 20% or greater loss in sales? Do you think marijuana in this situation would be facing inelastic or elastic demand? Explain your reasoning, and make sure to cite at least one of the required readings regarding elasticity.

For decades reformers tried to arouse public outrage against child labor, and they made significant headway at last with the help of photography—especially the photographs of Lewis W. Hine (1874–1940). A native of Wisconsin, Hine in 1908 became the staff photographer for the National Child Labor Committee, an organization committed to ending child labor. Hine’s images contributed heavily to the eventual success of the campaign to end child labor in the New Deal era. He is also celebrated as one of the fathers of documentary photography. You’ve seen other primary sources this week on on a related topic.  After reviewing Hines work (you can do so here), please answer one of the following questions for your intintial post (be sure to be specific about what you see in the images and how it relates to this part of American history:

  • Why might Hine’s graphic images have succeeded in stirring public opinion more powerfully than factual and statistical demonstrations of the evil of child labor?
