RW Week 1: Your Favorite Meme

1919 unread replies.1919 replies.

A lot of instructors have their students write introductory blogs about where they’re from, or what their history is with writing courses, or what kind of soap they like.

I’m done with all that.

WEEK 1 REFLECTIVE WRITING

I want you to write me an introductory blog of 200-500 words that addresses the following:

1. What is your favorite meme? It can be a picture, gif, video – anything in that realm. Provide a link or reference, or embed an example of the meme in your post if you’d like.

[FOR REASONS, I ask that you please avoid writing about anything related to the following memes/virals:

  • Chocolate Rain
  • Friday/Rebecca Black
  • Damn, Daniel
  • Average Homeboy
  • The Room/ “OH HAI”]

2. Why do you love it?

3. What aspects of the rhetorical situation do you think are important to making this meme funny or interesting or popular? Does it rely on knowledge/experience held by a specific discourse community? Does it play with genre conventions, or reflect a certain kind of ethos? What can you say about the meme’s rhetorical situation that you think we don’t already know, and that no one else may have considered?

Submit this response here as a discussion post (you’ll find the “reply/submit post” button below this text box). Read some of your classmates’ posts once you’ve posted to see the range of responses.

IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT MEMES ARE:

Don’t worry. You’ll learn quickly! I’d recommend you go read our Shifman readings before completing this assignment. You should also check out this primer on what memes are (Links to an external site.), and then go poke around knowyourmeme.com (Links to an external site.) to see the range of weird stuff that goes memetic. Fair warning: this is the internet, and some of these memes might be Not Safe For Work (NSFW) – meaning inappropriate for various reasons. The NSFW ones should be clearly marked on the sites I linked— just use prudence if you want to avoid them. Enjoy the strange new world of memes.

Look at the text below please, Thank You

Provide a brief synopsis of the film and describe the issues surrounding Veterans homelessness as described in the film.

What is the message portrayed by the film? Do you agree or disagree with it? Explain and use examples.

What VA programs, to end Veteran homelessness, could Herold have used? Were there any barriers faced by Herold in using those programs? Have there been any changes put in place since the movie first aired? If so, have they been successful or not. Why?

Art comparison essay

This is a GENERAL idea of what you will be covering in each essay. See each presentation for specifics:

Begin by reviewing the slides and watching all videos for the two artists. For each artist, please attend to the following when working on your written responses.

•Visually describe the artwork(s) (consider all your senses) – refer to the PDF’s under ART to help you with vocabulary.

•Describe the artist’s process. What media (paint, paper, clay, etc.) do they work with. What kind of artist (painter, sculptor, installation artist) are they?

•Describe what inspires the artist. Why do they make art the way they do?

•What is your overall impression of the work of the artist? What do you enjoy (and not enjoy) about this artist, their work and process? Be specific and give examples and please be honest – there will be art & artworks you connect to more than others. But, remember, you don’t have to want to hang the art in your living room to appreciate it – or see its value in society.

•What does it make you think about/remind you of? What themes do you see running through the work? What ties the separate pieces together?

•What statement does the artist and/or their artwork say about society and other big ideas (race, gender, social equality for example).

Please answer the questions in paragraph form. This is a significant portion of your overall grade so I expect you to put a significant amount of time and thought into these written responses. Each essay should be 650-750 words (2.5-3 pages double spaced).

motivation theorizing role various personal

You know now that there are various theories (some content-, others process-based) of how we can look at motivation.

Comparing all the theories you read about, which one seems to you to be the most convincing? Discuss them to conclude, based on your past experiences, which you think best describes how people in groups are most motivated – especially to collaborate with one another.

Don’t forget to account for the role of various personal motivations in persuading and influencing others – and how your own motivations/desires may have influenced which theory/model you find most convincing.

HUMI –Art, Ideas &Values

Until we try to do something ourselves, we often lack a real understanding of what it takes to be successful in that endeavor. Some tasks are easier than others – but often our expectations fall short of the reality. That is what makes experiential activities worthwhile. When we jump in and attempt to make something ourselves, that firsthand experience usually produces insights. Results might increase our appreciation how difficult or easy the process proves – at the least it allows us to evaluate if our first impressions were accurate. Until we attempt it, we really don’t know. That’s what a Try This exercise is about – we attempt something to explore the experience. In this case we take on the challenge of creating a particular style of artwork.

In the video posted below you’ll hear an example of a common response to modern art as, “I could do that.” As in, “Hey, what’s with that piece of conceptual art. I don’t get it. Like, I could do that.” We’ve probably all heard it and we might have said it ourselves. But let’s explore that idea a little further.

Watch the video: I Could Do That, courtesy of The Art Assignment.

(video) (Links to an external site.)the idea that anyone can do modern art is facetiouss

The Task:

  1. Let’s make an example of Neoplasticism! (10 points)
How? Well, here are some instructions.

Mondrian’s style consisted of compositions using only vertical and horizontal lines and rectangular shapes in black, white, gray, and primary colors. Every shape can be created from the most basic geometric shapes and every color can be created from mixing different quantities of primary RED, YELLOW, and BLUE. Mondrian’s work went on to be known as Neoplasticism (Links to an external site.) – a style he defined as an attempt to reduce art to its simplest, clearest form. As you can see, Piet Mondrian’s work inspired others. mondrian inspired chair.jpgmondrian inspired dress.jpg

While Mondrian worked with oil paints you should use pens and pencils – don’t forget the primary colors! Of course you can use a ruler to get nice sharp edges but you might want to try it without one just to see the difference in difficulty.

Try making one:

1. Draw 6 horizontal lines and 4 vertical lines, make some lines thick and some thin.

2.You should have a grid with lots of empty spaces.

3.Choose just a few spaces to fill in with the primary colors (red, yellow, blue).

4. Leave a lot of white space – the key is to keep it simple.

  1. Remember to use the red, yellow and blue of primary colors (Links to an external site.).
  2. Take a picture of your effort and upload it so I can see the results! (5 points)
  3. Write a short explanation about your experience. (10 points)
Reflect on what you discovered during this process.
