“Jimi Hendrix was one of the most innovative and original artists, and still is, even to this day. He created many new and unique styles, such as using amplifier feedback, distortion, and other various guitar effects to make his music stand out from the rest. He also tried new musical effects in the studio stages of his music, like overdubbing and using stereophonic phasing to get his desired electronic sound. All of these techniques put together truly made him the first “electronic” rock n’ roll musician. Not only was his music memorable, his performances were unmatched when it came down to his creativity. In 1967 at the Monterey Pop Festival, Hendrix shocked his audience by playing the guitar with his teeth, and even behind his back, all before ending the show with his guitar on fire. Another notable performance was at the Woodstock Festival in 1969, where he played his electronic version of “The Star Spangled Banner” which critics dubbed “Anti-American”, thus resulting in some significant controversy. The electronic techniques that Jimi Hendrix introduced to rock truly shaped the genre, and made him a pivotal figure in rock n’ roll music.”
“Jimi Hendrix was, without a doubt, one of the most influential instrumentalist and artists in the history of rock music. While his music career only lasted 4 years due to his untimely death in 1970, he still recorded over 150 songs and played over 200 live shows. Hendrix wrote his songs in a variety of styles including R&B, blues, funk, hard rock, and the list goes on. His innovations procedes his career and set the bar high for his peers and future artists. For instance, he popularized tone altering effects such as the wah pedal and the Octavia, which highers or lowers the pitch of the guitar. Along with these effects, Hendrix was a phenomenal guitarist both technically and emotionally. You can just feel him pouring out his soul into every note he plays. His signature guitar is a right handed Stratocaster with the strings flipped, since he was left handed, therefore playing the guitar “upside down”. The performance at the Woodstock festival in 1969 was extremely memorable as it was one of his best performances in his career. It also included his rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” which of course had a solo at the end of it in classic Hendrix style.”

The Monterey Pop festival was so iconic because Jimi had done things that were never seen before such as playing the guitar with his teeth and behind his back as well as “making love to his guitar” and lighting his guitar on fire with lighter fluid at the end of his performance. What made his Woodstock performance so memorable was his “Anti-American” performance of the “Star Spangled Banner.” Many claiming that this performance was a “counterculture commentary” on the Vietnam War. “

One of Jimi Hendrix’s more iconic performances was in the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. The performance was energetic and extravagant. He performed stunts like playing the guitar with his teeth and playing behind his back. Hendrix finished his performance by making love to his guitar, setting in on fire, smashing it and throwing it to the crowd. His other iconic performance was in 1969’s Woodstock Festival. He performed a controversial stunt by playing “The Star Spangled Banner” in protest to the Vietnam war (Week 5 Notes). He punctuated the “the rocket’s red glare” and “the bombs bursting in air” with guitar sounds that sounded like people crying and booms landing.”
