People feel better when they think they are getting a great bargain when they shop. Knowing this, some retailer’s markup items above the traditional retail price and then offer a 60 percent discount. If they had simply discounted the normal retail price by 20 percent, the resulting “sale price” would have been the same. One retailer says that he is just making shoppers happy that they got a great deal when he inflates the retail price before discounting.

Significantly marking up prices in order to offer “deep discounts” is not an unethical pricing practice per se, but it may be considered misleading advertising. The retailer is not really reducing its profits as a result of offering the sale price, even though a 60 percent discount implies a financial sacrifice on the part of the retailer for the benefit of the customer.

The situation described above could, perhaps, be considered a sales promotion that uses deception or manipulation.

Advertising is everywhere. Most of us are unaware and try to ignore, or even block it. However, there are always some campaigns that manages to penetrate through our ambivalence and makes us stop and listen. I do believe that any winning brands needs combination of powerful, meaningful, inspirational messages delivered in ways that touch the audiences with great products and services. Advertisement campaigns are often founded on deep psychological insights. Lastly, the common theme for success among most of the ads is to look beyond the brand to make a positive impact in an innovative way.

For my adverting campaign, I would use branding as a strategy. Branding improves recognition from your consumers. For example, Chick Fil A has a huge brand with a logo that consumers recognize. Branding and showing loyalty to customers helps them grow trust within your consumers. You need to have all the trust from them you can get because they are the ones who in the end determine if your business dies or continues. Brands also support economic value.  Brands are the mostly intangible assets. Many things such as products or companies being sold and bought for example happen all the time.But, if my brand is very strong I have people that will remember that no matter what happens through the years, I will have a strong ground because my brand helped me stay on top. It is also important to identity, know, and understand your target auience. They are the ones who buy and support your brand and if you lose them it’s all over. 

I would also consider being very involved in social media. This is the era of social media with billions of people on popular sites such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and Snapchat. I have every right to take advantage of the sites advertise my company to better myself.

The strategies that work best for an advertising campaign is dependent on the goals of the business. If lead generation, the process of collecting information from prospect customers that will be later contacted by salespeople, is the goal than I would make use of digital marketing. There are number of digital marketing channels that are effective in creating lead generations: Email marketing, Search Engine Optimization. Email marketing is implemented by many businesses because of its benefits: low expenses, efficient targeting, segmentation, and it is easy to track, and analyze. Search engine optimization is the process of increasing visibility by increasing rank on list of results returned by a search engine.  I chose this strategy because it allows for business to receive targeted traffic through the use of keywords that corresponds with your business.  SEO increases sale without respectively increasing one’s marketing cost.

There are two other strategies that I would consider: Pay per click advertising, and Social media marketing, PPC advertising provides targeted traffic with the use of bidding and placing ads. Social media marketing will allow me to use different social media mediums to target consumers. Facebook will allow me to reach any kind of consumer. Twitter will allow me to reach millennials. Linkedin will allow me to reach businesses and business professionals.

Strategic Human Resources Management (HRM) Plan

American Plastics had fared rather worse than its competitors during the economic downturn. With revenue, quality, and productivity down, management set several goals to reverse the company’s fortune. One area in need of improvement was human resources and “Janet,” the newly appointed HR Director faced a daunting challenge: to quickly re-invent the Human Resources function, reposition it a strategic partner to the business, and improve employee perceptions of her department. Her predecessor retired after leading a major reduction in force causing a significant exodus of key talent, some unexpected. Janet was charged with finding a way to retain top talent and develop a steady but highly-qualified stream of candidates to fill regular as well as critical positions. The CEO agreed with her that differentiating the human resources function was essential for the company’s strategic plan to succeed.

In her first two weeks on the job Janet discovered:

  • Job descriptions were inconsistent, long but vague lists of high level “duties and responsibilities” and qualifications
  • Job titles didn’t reflect the work people did, used instead as a framework for budgeting and compensation as many were doing unique work requiring different knowledge and skills.
  • Aside from providing a coordinating function, human resources had outsourced recruiting to third parties who presented candidates based on their internet postings and other sources.   • Training and Development (T&D) had largely been outsourced to several companies that provided generic on-line courses.
  • The recent departure of several mission-critical employees disclosed no systematic means of capturing expertise from employees; when they left, their knowledge left with them.
  • The Performance Employee Evaluation Program didn’t align with anything, was viewed by managers and individual contributors alike as a burdensome annual chore that interfered with people’s “real jobs.”

The management of talent is one of a handful of strategic services human resources can offer. The decline of traditional HR functions through automation, self-service, and outsourcing demands a “culture change” within human resources: adopt a business focus by an organization still structured largely around benefits administration, time and attendance reporting, labor cost processing, and similar transactional operations.
