information Technology and Data Mining

Health care information technology is a broad term that describes the technology and infrastructure used to record, analyze, and share patient health data. Health information technology was created in order to provide better care for patients along with the ability to help achieve health equity. Health information technology is able to help support recordings of patient data to improve healthcare delivery and allow for analysis of this information for both healthcare practitioners and ministry of health and government agencies. This data is used for the implementation of policies in order to better treat and prevent the spread of diseases. Health information technology improves the quality of healthcare delivery, increases patient safety, decreases medical errors, and strengthens the interaction between patients and healthcare providers (OpenMRS, 2015).

Data mining is defined as the computer-assisted process of digging through and analyzing enormous sets of data and then extracting the meaning of data. With data mining, business organizations, such as health care facilities, are able to make more precise business decisions which ultimately allow the facility to gain more profits. Data mining holds great potential to improve health systems. It uses data and analytics to identify best practices that improve care and reduce costs allowing for an increase in the quality of patient health care (Rajkumar, 2015).

Quality Performance Indicators

One important quality performance indicator that can be monitored is the length of time patients must wait before being seen by a health care provider in the ER. It is a measure of performance and efficiency of care. ER wait times are a vital measure of performance and quality of care as they track one of the most sensitive areas of a hospital. Hospitals must constantly strive to reduce wait times in order to offer better procedures for quicker treatment. Measuring how long patients must wait reveals issues in the admissions process, the speed of treatment, and health care providers’ ability to provide quality care. Additionally, they can be measured in both immediate terms, or over longer periods of time to determine trends and allocate resources better to reduce workloads and stress. Data is collected by using information technology from admission soft ware and patient records and the facility is able to measure overall ER wait times (Farquhar, 2016). By using this data, the facility is able to see where improvements can be made in order to increase patient satisfaction and decrease overall waiting room times.

Another example of a quality performance indicator is the rates at which patients fall and incur injury during a hospital stay. Between 700,000 and 1 million patients suffer a fall in U.S. hospitals each year, according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. By tracking falls using information technology and data to chart where, when, and with whom falls are occurring, health care facilities are able to see exactly where they need to alter and tailor the health care facility to help prevent future falls. In the end, this would lead to improved patient care outcomes.

Brooke’s Post

Information technology and data mining both have an impact on the quality of health care provided to the patient. Information technology allows the advanced practice nurse to research the best practice suggested for a diagnosis. It also is used to find available resources to help narrow down a proper diagnosis or to assist with educational material to provide to a patient so they can better understand their disease process or medications being prescribed. These are all examples of how the quality of health care being delivered is increased with information technology (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2014).

Data mining is examining a large set of data and finding patterns that exist. This information is then used to predict if the same patterns are likely to occur in the future, and if so, how often they will occur. This process is much easier and quicker now that electronic health records are so popular. Data mining impacts the quality of health care by providing accurate reports over a period of time that can be used to examine best practice trends (Hamric, Spross, Hanson, & Hamric, 2009).

One quality performance indicator well known in the health care field is patient satisfaction. Measuring patient satisfaction helps the company be more aware of their shortcomings and provides insight into what adjustments need to be made in order to assure high quality care is being provided. In order to maintain high patient satisfaction scores, employees must consistently provide excellent care to the patients. By doing so, this changes care outcomes for the better. Not only does the patient benefit from this but the organization does as well. One benefit to the organization is an increase in business due to being well known in the community for having a good reputation. Another benefit to the organization is a decrease in the amount of readmissions leading to better reimbursement percentages. Although there are benefits to the organization, studies have shown that this may not necessarily be of greatest benefit to the patient. In one article, high satisfaction scores led to a 44% increase in mortality rate (“Patient satisfaction: When a doctor’s judgment risks a poor rating – amednews.com”, 2016). Analyzing patient satisfaction data with information technology allows users to evaluate what is really best for the patient.

Another quality performance indicator used in healthcare is lab turnaround times. This has been shown to be extremely beneficial to the patient because the faster the results, the faster the patient gets the care they need. In contrast, this can also lead to unrealistic expectations by the healthcare team. Communication can be affected and crucial things can be missed. This also leads to a heavy reliance on technology which has been known to fail without notice. Measuring lab turnaround times also put increased pressure on the lab personnel which can lead to an increase in errors due to unrealistic expectations. Advancements in technology have allowed wireless uploading of lab results leading to an increase in turnaround times which has been known to have an effect on patient outcomes.

What is the assignment?

Topic

Human history is marked by many influential events that have changed the way we live and think – changes to our belief systems caused by a paradigm shift.

In this essay you will choose one specific historical event and argue how that event affected our belief systems and caused a paradigm shift.

In other words, consider the question: How has your chosen event created a distinct “new world” from the “old world” that existed before it?

Topic Selection and Focus

Your essay topic will address one specific, influential historical event of any time in any culture. This event can be in the distant past or one that is more recent. Allow your search for a topic to stretch beyond the common, shallow, and stereotyped “pop culture” that is most familiar to us all in the present moment.

The timing of your chosen event must be far enough in the past to have allowed for a new-world paradigm shift to have occurred, meaning that there has been time for the creation of a new belief system supported by a body of knowledge and research.

Consider the difference between a topic and an event:

Topic – Gay marriage in the U.S. (broad, general)
Event – The passage of the Marriage Equality Act (narrow, specific)

Topic – Instability in the Middle East (broad, general)
Event – The Syrian Civil War (narrow, specific)

Beyond choosing one single event, you will be focusing your research and argument on one specific belief system. In other words, what one area of our society has been altered because of this event.

Some examples of belief systems to choose from are:

  • economic
  • political
  • educational
  • medical/social welfare
  • military or defense
  • social identity
  • spiritual or religious beliefs
  • cultural systems, beliefs, patterns
  • social behavior patterns

These belief systems are in themselves broad ideas and can be further broken down and made more specific depending on your topic. Use the exercises and brainstorming ideas provided for you in the lecture to help your further narrow your topic and focus.

Some Thoughts on Developing and Supporting Your Argument

Consider what specific old-world concepts have been destroyed and what new-world concepts have been built in their place. Explore both the physical world and the ideological/thought patterns

Research and Use of Sources

You will need to support your argument by integrating evidence from three (3) academic sources.

Use the library to find these sources: books, periodicals, academic journals. Only one (1) source may come from Internet searches and websites. Wikipedia and other generic sites are not reliable and credible sources of information, but can be sued as a “jumping off” point to find other, more credible sources.

Annotated Bibliography

You will formally evaluate and annotate all outside sources prior to using them in your essay. Refer to the separate Source Evaluation and Annotated Bibliography packet for more details and a sample annotation.

Peer Workshop

You will be required to participate in a peer workshop forum, either online or in person, during an upcoming module. Participation in this workshop is a graded part of this assignment.

Additional Notes

The following are important guidelines to achieve the minimum passing grade for this assignment. Any essay not meeting these basic requirements is not eligible to receive a higher grade than a “D”.

  • Display a significant attempt at revision from first draft to final draft
  • Fulfill all the requirements of the assignment as detailed on this sheet
  • Meet the minimum page requirement
  • Follow all APA formatting and citation guidelines

Acc 418 Unit 3 Discussions

***There are 2 Discussions. Each discussion must be 250 words and need to have at least 1 to 2 references.

Discussion 1:

Kohlberg said that there are six stages of moral development, culminating in a belief that there are universal ethical principles that everyone should follow. Relativists say that every culture has different ethical principles and there’s no absolute right or wrong. Postmoderns say that there is no universal truth at all only constructs. Do you think that implies that these ethical systems are less developed than a philosophy that teaches universal truth or that Kohlberg was wrong? Explain your reasoning.

Discussion 2:

In the culture in which you grew up, which of the four false goods (money, pleasure, prestige, and power) do you think is the strongest temptation for the most people? Why do you think so?

develop a Competitive Profile Matrix (CPM) for Disney World, Universal Studios (FLA), and Busch Gardens (FLA)

For this exercise, you will develop a Competitive Profile Matrix (CPM) for Disney World, Universal Studios (FLA), and Busch Gardens (FLA). A CPM is like the class presentation matrix we developed. It addresses both internal and external issues for an organization. The main component of the CPM is the Critical Success Factors. Critical Success Factors are factors or activities critical to the success of an organization.

Using the attached template, select 5 Critical Success Factors from the table listed below that you feel are critical to the theme park industry. Once you have selected the 5, construct a CPM for Disney, Universal and Busch Gardens.

Case study

“Case Study instructions:

Each Case Study assignment is designed to help you make application of course content to a counseling situation. You are to read the assigned case study, determine the key issues presented, provide diagnostic impressions based upon the DSM-5, and develop treatment recommendations. You will need to follow the Case Study Template for each assignment.

Under diagnostic impressions, be sure to consider other disorders in addition to the main disorder. Provide a rationale for your diagnostic impressions using criteria from the DSM-5, also including reasons for ruling out certain disorders. The goal is to present, in writing, the basis for your diagnostic impressions.

Under treatment recommendations, be sure to consider the biopsychosociospiritual aspects of the case. Make sure your recommendations are relevant to the case, able to be implemented by the client, and have some basis of support from 2–3 references from professional literature.

Case Study 3

Mr. Boyle is a 55-year-old high school principal who has come in for an assessment. He reports that this is due to his wife’s concern after he had a heated interaction with the school board recently. This interaction has put his job as a principal in jeopardy. Mr. Boyle reports that his wife states that their marriage is unbearable due to Mr. Boyle’s difficulty in getting along with others, and that if it does not improve, she will have to leave him. During the interview Mr. Boyle states that although he has always been a suspicious person, this has lately increased. Despite this admission, he goes on to explain that he believes members of the school board are conspiring with some of the faculty at his school and bitter parents of former students to have him removed from his position as principal. He reports that 1 of the school board administrators recently shared with Mr. Boyle that since his appointment as principal 2 years ago, he has been driving everyone “nuts” because he is too structured. Mr. Boyle reports that he has been doing the best job he can and that he believes this statement stems from jealousy, as the board member’s friend also wanted the principal position. When questioned in more detail, Mr. Boyle shares that he may be overreacting and that he may be at fault for some of these issues. However, he reports that he spends a significant amount of time thinking about how he is being mistreated by the school board. He admits that this is causing him to not perform as well as he could at work.

When Mr. Boyle’s wife is questioned separately, she reports that Mr. Boyle has always had a difficult time making friends and trusting in others. She reports that recently he has become more irritable and argumentative with her, his friends, and the faculty at his school. She shared that the recent fight with the school board was over Mr. Boyle’s insistence that he had been passed over for an adequate yearly raise. Although the school board explained to Mr. Boyle that the all of the principals’ yearly raises had been reduced this year due to budget cuts, he insisted on presenting his case to the school board. She reports that after he was still refused the raise he has been sullen, has told her he feels helpless and hopeless, and has lost interest in most of the things that previously interested him. She reports that this began the same week he was refused the raise.

Mr. Boyle’s 2 children are also interviewed—a boy, 15 years old, and a girl, 17 years old. They both report that Mr. Boyle is very strict and runs the household like a drill sergeant. He monitors every expense, where they go, and who they are with. Mr. Boyle’s daughter even reports that he will check her gas gauge in her car to see if the gas used matches the distance she told him she went. She believes he is just a “penny-pincher.”

When asked to describe himself, Mr. Boyle says he is very proud of the fact that he is a person who cannot be taken advantage of, as he can spot a con from a mile away. He reports that he came from a very poor family and worked his way to where he is today. He reports that although he had to endure a lot of adverse situations and jealous people, he has made his way to the top on his own abilities.

irst analyze your writing and experience in this class:

First analyze your writing and experience in this class:

  1. Look through your weekly papers from the start of class to the present week. Look over your early drafts and thoughtfully compare them to the final papers you have produced in this class. What, if any, are the differences you see when you look at Format, Basic Writing, Organization, and Thoughtfulness?
  2. Reflect upon how you “felt” about your writing at the start of the semester, and compare that to how you “feel” about your writing now? Is there any difference in your feelings? Do you see yourself any differently as a writer? How, if so?
  3. Think about the writing you are doing for other classes: papers, written tests and quizzes, and written homework assignments. and even online writing on Blackboard and Discussions. Do you see any improvement in the writing (and grades, maybe) in the work you are producing for other classes?

After analyzing, write a response that first summarizes your findings from your analysis, and then identifies what you believe to be the most important thing you have learned in this class (and why).
