For this forum we want to focus on the notion of doubt.

Normally, we tend to think that doubt is a bad or negative thing; in school for example, we strive for the right answers; in normal US daily activity, we try to get things done, be productive, and proceed with our activities. “Doubt” is not seen as a value.

All semester both directly and indirectly, explicitly and implicitly we have seen how important doubt is in philosophy.

The prisoners in Plato’s cave suffered because in part because they did not know to doubt the reality of the shadows that constituted most of their daily lives.

Socrates in the Apology walked around Athens teaching people the importance of doubting their lives and values—he taught them to all into question what they saw, felt, and thought.

In the Sermon that we read, we saw Jesus putting into question people’s standard way of behaving.

Now in Descartes, doubt becomes the basis for his first Meditation, an essential step on his way to understanding the soul, god, truth, and reality. Put simply, he is saying that without active, conscious doubt one can never get to these higher order values and insights.

Consequently, I want everyone to practice and try out doubting for Forum 2.

After very carefully reading Descartes’ Meditation 1 and reviewing the videos on Descartes that I posted, I want you to go into your neighborhood for a walk, drive, or short trip. Spend about 45 minutes walking, driving, or just wandering.

Once you have done this, ask yourself: “What can I doubt?”

Write 2-5 paragraphs responding to this. Use the following format for this forum

  1. Concise introduction stating where you are and in a sentence what you are doubting and the basic reason why. If you do not want to share the actual location, you may fictionalize. I don’t care which location you choose, but I want there to be one. Otherwise, philosophy is abstract and empty.
  2. Write 1-3 paragraphs on what can be doubted about what you see. Explain why you can doubt this. These paragraphs should have at least two examples of things that happen or at least could conceivably happen. You may be an active member of the experience or stay at a distance and just observe and oversee.
  3. Conclude with a traditional summary

Extra-credit

Include a 2-5 minute video of your trip/walk and narrate what you can doubt and why. If you want someone to video you interacting that is fine but you can also just narrate something that you are observing.

Let me give a few examples.

  1. From a bridge over the Capital Beltway, I might video a 6pm traffic jam and ask questions about why this is happening. I would be putting into question why it is happening. “I see this enormous traffic jam that occurs near where I live every night of the work week. I wonder why people are forced to waste hours of their days like this. Why does this happen? Why does no one protest?

Outside my metro there are always homeless people. This is especially horrible in poor weather. I might put into question why this has to happen. I would be doubting that it has to happen. Isn’t there another way

Real or fake ?

In the past, young artists would study with a master artist to learn from him. They would copy his art in an attempt to gain his skill and wisdom and he was right there guiding them. Art historians are often able to identify these copies, but not always. As a result, there’s sometimes the risk that a collector will purchase an art piece attributed to a master when it was, in fact, his student’s work.

With the exorbitant prices art fetches, there are those who make a living creating art forgeries. They hone their technique, use old materials to make their work seem authentic, artificially age their piece and create a fake paper trail so that their ruse is believable.

People get very offended when they pay a lot of money for an art forgery. Naturally that has something to do with being tricked, which is often the name of the game. But, we allow muscicians to play the same works as great composers and don’t think less of them for doing so. Society allows actors to recreate roles made famous by the greats from the past and we often celebrate their accomplishments.

Why does it matter so much when someone copies an artist’s work? What is the worth of a good forgery? If experts can’t tell the difference between a da Vinci and a fake, why should we care? What is the true value of the original art piece? Is it because we want to touch or see the art piece that a great artist created? Is there something near magical about being close to an art piece shaped by a great artist? Is it about experiencing the magic? Is it all about the prestigue of owning a work from a great master or is there more to it?

I encourage you to research this on the internet before you post your reply What did you discover? What do the experts say? How do you feel about these issues?

Organizational pattrns in argument

Let’s look at samples of research-based writing: “Nervous Nellies” on p. 328; “From Degrading to De-Grading” on p. 254; and “How Many Zombies Do You Know?” on p. 290.

Review each selection and include in your post responses to these questions. What do you notice about how each is organized and presented? What kinds of appeals to the audience does each author use? How are sources used in text?

Reading Strategy Note: Unlike summary and paraphrase, which require close reading, for this discussion use the reading strategy of skimming. Carefully read the introductory paragraph, but then move quickly, reading only the topic sentence of each paragraph. The goal is to compare and contrast the differences in the presentation of the information in the document. Skim and review until you have an impression you can share in the discussion.

Assignment 2: Project Paper

The Project Paper focuses on a suggested topic related to art, architecture, history, music, or literature. The project will reflect your views and interpretation of the topic. This project is designed to help you stretch your mind and your abilities to be the creative, innovative, and critical thinker you already are!  

Choose one (1) of the topics from the list of topic choices below. Read the topic carefully. Write a three to four (3-4) page paper (750-1,000 words) that responds to each of the items described in the topic. 

For the topic you choose:

  1. Support your ideas with specific, illustrative examples. If there are questions or points associated with your chosen topic, be sure to answer all of the listed questions and address all of the items in that topic. If your topic asks you to do several things related to the topic, be sure to do each of the things listed.
  2. While some of the topics tend to lend themselves toward particular writing genres, you are not restricted to the specific format suggested for the individual topic. For example, you may do an “interview,” a “proposal,” a “letter,” a “short story,” a “blog,” an “essay,” an “article,” or any other written genre for almost any of the topics. The project is intended to be fun as well as informative, so feel free to be creative with the delivery of your information. 
  3. Use at least three (3) good quality academic sources, with one (1) source being the class text.
    NoteWikipedia and other similar Websites do not qualify as academic resources. You are highly encouraged to use the Resource Center tab at the top of your Blackboard page.

Topic choices (pick 1): 

  • Office Art Memo. Memorandum. Your boss, who knows you have been taking a humanities class since he pays for your tuition reimbursement, has tasked you with managing the art budget for your company, expecting you to choose various pieces of art for the new corporate offices.  (Note: Replicas of the works are acceptable since they are more cost-efficient and you are working on a budget.)  Include the following: 
    1. Identify three (3) examples of 19th century Impressionist painting or sculpture and three (3) Post-Impressionist works. Explain how the six (6) pieces of art fall into these two (2) styles. 
    2. In a memo, describe the appearance of your six (6) choices to your CEO so he or she will know what the art looks like and where it would be placed in the corporate offices. 
    3. Explain why each piece is considered to be historically significant. 
    4. Explain how each piece “fits” your company’s overall (or desired) corporate image. Keep in mind that a piece of art is supposed to “say” something about the owner, so describe what would these pieces of art say about your company. 
  • New Composition. Speech. Your uncle’s birthday is in two (2) months, and everyone knows that he loves almost all kinds of music. As a birthday gift for him, you want to have a special piece of music composed in his honor which will be played at a family birthday celebration. Write a speech that you will make to the composer’s agent. Include the following:  
    1. Narrow your choices down to three (3) composers you’ve studied in this course. Choose one (1) of the composers and explain why you want him to write the “birthday present” music. 
    2. Explain why the other two (2) composers were ultimately not selected. 
    3. Specifically identify the musical elements in the composer’s style that you would like to be included in the new music written for your uncle. 
    4. Describe what sort of emotion is generated by listening to the works of your selected composer; in other words, what do you want your uncle to “feel” as he hears the music, and why is this composer so perfect for this composition?
  • Harlem Renaissance Poets. Essay & Poem. Choose two (2) poems by different authors from the Harlem Renaissance. Write an essay that: 
    1. Describes each author’s role and importance within the Harlem Renaissance. 
    2. Identify the elements in each of their poems in which you see evidence of the “double-consciousness” being expressed by each author. 
    3. Fully describe at least two (2) primary themes you see in the poetry written during this time period, referring to specific lines in each of the poems. 
    4. Write your own poem that expresses these identified themes of the Harlem Renaissance.  
  • Women’s Roles Then & Now.Script. Script a conversation between two (2) notable women from the 18th and / or 19th century on the roles women should play in society. Within the dialogue, include: 
    1. Biographical information for each woman. 
    2. The historical status for women in general during the time period in which each woman lived.
    3. What opinions each of the women might have on the role the women should play in society during their lifetimes. 
    4. What each of the women might think about women’s current roles.
  • Other topic choice recommended and approved by the professor and supported by the grading rubric.

The Project Paper will be graded on:

  • The level to which the instructions were followed.
  • The extent to which all four (4) parts in the topic were addressed.
  • The adequacy of information, examples, and details which support the general claim or main  idea.
  • The clarity and relevance of the explanations and descriptions.
  • Adherence to standard rules of grammar, punctuation, and mechanics.
  • The inclusion of three (3) required references (two [2] additional sources besides your textbook) documented using APA style.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; references must follow APA Style format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions specific to the selected topic. (Note: Students can find APA style materials located in the Additional Resources section of their Student Center within their course shell for reference)

Comparative Essay Draft

Write a 750-1000 word essay about a pair of items in which the similarities and differences of those items are compared and contrasted in the style described within Unit III. Please note that the Comparative Essay Final will be due in Unit IV of this course. However, you should complete the entire paper in this draft and do your best work as you will have more applicable feedback from which to make changes to your essay for the final draft.

Purpose: Throughout Unit III, we have discussed the conventions of the comparative essay. The purpose of this assignment is to measure your mastery of those conventions by putting your knowledge into practice.
