Discussion: Challenges Posed by Democracy

Discussion: Challenges Posed by Democracy

The early weeks of this course emphasized the integral role that processes play in democratic governance. While democratic processes are important to democratic governance, they are sometimes slow and messy and may seem to be an impediment more than a means for resolving society’s problems. In addition, the daily operations of the democratic system create challenges to its very existence. Particular issues and challenges also may place a strain on democracy. One example is the tension between liberty and safety related to individual rights and personal security. Both issues highlight elements of founding democratic principles, yet they conflict and demonstrate discord within the microcosm of democracy. As a student of governance and public policy, it is important that you are aware of how challenges within democracy might impact day-to-day governance and policy making. Understanding these challenges may be helpful as you develop strategies to surmount them as they arise.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review the media piece “Perspectives on the World Speaker Series: Politics in an Age of Partisanship with Christine Todd Whitman” and think about the role of partisan politics in democratic governance. Also, consider the conflict between partisan politics and policy making and how partisanship might impact policy making in a democratic government.

https://www.waldenu.edu/connect/video-and-multimed…

  • Think about how the democratic process might hamper or challenge policy making and consider strategies that might be used to overcome those challenges.
  • Revisit the Constitution of the United States (located in the Week 3 Learning Resources) to review democratic principles. Think about conflicts that may exist among those principles.

https://www.senate.gov/civics/constitution_item/co…

  • Peruse the Internet, periodicals, or other current sources of information for current policy issues on the public agenda.
  • Select a current policy issue (other than the one in the media piece) that poses a challenge to governance and/or public policy.
  • Think about how democracy poses a challenge to resolving the policy issue by means of governance and/or public policy.
  • Reflect on how we might overcome some of the limitations of democracy.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post a brief description of the policy issue you selected. Explain how democracy poses a challenge to the resolution of the issue by means of governance and/or public policy. Be specific and provide examples to illustrate your explanation. Explain how the democratic challenges to the resolution of that issue might be overcome.

If you live outside the United States, explain some of the challenges that democracy does (or would) face in your country.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

Research (4 steps )

Research Step 1: Topic/Working Thesis

Gatsby by Fitzgerald, The Sun Also Rises by Hemingway, Tender is the Night by Fitzgerald, or For Whom the Bell Tollsby Hemingway. The topic is up to you, but you will be required to complete ALL of the steps of the research process

Step 1:

Briefly state your topic selection and write a working thesis sentence. Your thesis sentence should be the beginning of the argument that you will make about your topic. You can choose what aspect you want to focus on (for example, theme, imagery, character development, etc). You will get a chance later to revise your thesis sentence if you find that your ideas change during the research process. Ultimately, your thesis sentence that you end up with when you write the actual paper should provide a blueprint of what you want to say ABOUT those elements of the novel. Type your topic selection and working thesis

Research Step 2: Annotated Bibliography

Step 2:

Annotated Bibliography

You are required to use at least one reputable, scholarly source, which should be an article OR a digital book chapter accessed through the library’s online databases that has been written by a scholar/expert in the fields of literature/writing or history. The use of Wikipedia, any online sources that do not list an author, or information that comes from sites that just summarize the plot and key points (like SparkNotes, Shmoop, Cliffsnotes) is NOT acceptable and should NOT be cited as a source. Suggested databases found through lib.fit.edu — JSTOR, Gale Virtual Reference Library, Literature Resource Center, Bloom’s Literature, ProQuest, Academic Search Complete.

Your Annotated Bibliography should follow MLA format. It will include the full citation for the source at the top and then a paragraph explaining what the article is about AND how you plan to use it in your paper. Follow the example linked in the file attached to see what yours should look like.

Research Step 3: Outline

Step 3:

Outline

Create an alphanumeric formal outline for your topic. Include your revised thesis statement at the top. Provide evidence from the novel and your secondary source within the outline and include in-text citations that correspond with your Works Cited page at the end of the outline.

Research Step 4: Full Essay

Step 4:

Full Essay

For your research essay, you are required to incorporate material from your secondary source AND include quotes from the novel in your paper (properly cited) in order to fulfill the minimum requirements for the assignment.

Please note that you are expected to proofread your formal writing before submitting it. Excessive grammar errors, typos, improper citation, and formatting errors will lead to a lower grade on the assignment. All papers must conform to the conventions of academic writing and MLA format.

Parameters: 1500-2000 words with a Works Cited section at the end

Module 7 Discussion

Discussion Topic

Task: Reply to this topic

Have you ever “liked” a company or product on Facebook? Participated in a company’s blog or posted pictures on their website? Do you and your friends have the next great commercial for Doritos? The snack food firm has turned user generated content into an advertising phenomenon. Their customer created ads are frequently among the most popular during the Super Bowl, and in many cases, have gone viral. User generated content is exactly what it sounds like, content such as blogs, videos, pictures, and tweets (among many other types) that are created and shared by ordinary customers.

Check out this ad that turned into an entire storyline for the firm that developed it and now has not only millions of views, but a following that waits for the next “episode” as if it were a TV series. Thousands have posted their comments, photos and shared the ad with other potential customers – the original in the series has hundreds of thousands “likes”. Not bad for stuff in a can…

OK, your turn. Conduct a web search for examples of firms that have successfully employed user generated content; there are lots of great ones to choose from. If they can do it, so can you! How would you employ user generated content to promote, brand, and sell the product you are using in your marketing plan? Is mommy blogging for you? Photo contests? How will you create the “buzz” you need to launch your product? Describe your user generated content plan and why you selected one type of content over another. How will you get your customers to participate? What’s in it for them? Be specific and share at least one example of a firm that has used a similar strategy.

Your opening post should be at least 350 words and feel free to include photos and samples of the content. As always, college level writing and grammar are expected.

Find out all you can online about the male birth control pill (for example there is an article from How Stuff Works on the male pill-http://health.howstuffworks.com/sexual-health/contraception/male-bc-pill.htm). Considering all you read last week about the female pill, discuss your findings on the male pill. Consider questions such as: Are attitudes towards the male pill the same as the female? Does responsibility fall more on one person? On one sex? Find an online article about the male pill and cite outside of the one I mention above. Do articles suggest one partner may be more trustworthy? What about side effects? Concerns?

create 2 ethical dilemma

In the file there are 2 examples for an ethical dilemmas, so you can look at them as a guide.

You need to find two business-related stories that contain an ethical dilemma. You will need to read through the business section of a newspaper or website. You should copy the link to the article, summarize the article in two or three sentences, and then write an ethical dilemma that someone in the story clearly had to make a decision about. Remember that the ethical dilemma needs to follow the formula of “Should business person X do Y?” . You can use stories from news outlets overseas or in the U.S. They can also be outlets that are related to a particular business or hobby that you are interested in for your future career.

In the past few weeks, I remember many of us in the class posting about how Facebook and Google+ had had data breaches. This article mentions those incidents but also mainly focuses on the data breach of ANOTHER major internet company: Tumblr. Apparently through the Recommended Blogs feature, one could potentially obtain details about a blog, such as email address, password, and last login IP address. Although it WAS patched, the reason this is noteworthy is because, as the article mentions, this is yet again another major social media that has been vulnerable to attacks. I guess it’s just a lesson for us to be careful about what we publicize online.”

I’ve managed to find yet another article on bitcoin!! So a recent patch came out to stop miners from being hit with Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. A result of this aggression, the entire block chain would be brought down. Basically, people could no longer mine bitcoin. It would take miners 12.5 bitcoin (about $80,000) worth of mining in order to overcome the DDOS attack. They would not only lose out on possible profit, but also need to pay for the electricity their mining rigs are consuming while dealing the with DDOS. Too bad the Secret Service won’t intervene to protect bitcoin miners. “

Principle of management

Chapter 13 Creating and Managing Teams

Few trends have influenced how work gets done in organizations as much as the use of work teams. Organizations are increasingly structuring work around teams rather than individuals. Managers need to understand what influences team performance and satisfaction.

Chapter 14 Managing Communication

Without communication, nothing would ever get done in organizations. Managers are concerned with two types of communic9ation: interpersonal and organizational. We look at both in this chapter and the role they play in a manager’s ability to be efficient and effective.

In this chapter’s ethical dilemma, students are to consider what happens when colleagues or even your boss wants to “friend” you on a social network site. Is it okay to provide people you know in a professional sense a “window into your personal life”? What ethical issues might arise in such a situation? In this chapter, the distinction is made between formal communication and informal communication. Most people would see Facebook as informal communication (even though we have already discussed the use of Facebook as a recruiting tool for Ernst & Young). Employees have the right to decline others access to their personal information on social networking site, unless the site is dedicated for company use. Students should also be aware that perspective employers might also want access to their social networking information to learn more about an applicant.

14-11. What do you think? Is it okay to provide people you know in a professional sense a “window into your personal life”?

14-12. What ethical issues might arise in such a situation?

14-13. Describe how technology affects managerial communication and organizations

Conflict Resolution writing assignment

Although we hope teams will naturally work well together, conflict is a common element of human relationships. In order to manage the emotions involved with a conflict and prevent relationships from breaking down, it is important to have a process for resolving the conflict. This process is often called a conflict resolution policy or a team covenant.

The best conflict resolution plans create a procedure that focuses on restoring relationships, addressing the emotions involved, and working out the issue without involving management, if possible. The goal is to resolve conflict informally, which creates an environment where people feel encouraged and supported, even when they face a conflict!

The policy should never be about punishment or consequences. Instead, it should give everyone a safe way to work through a problem without hurting anyone involved.

STEP 1:

Create a conflict resolution policy that you will use when you’re leading a team. This policy should include:o Multiple steps that allow conflict to be addressed privately first,

followed by guidelines for enlisting help from others if necessary. o A positive process that focuses on restoring relationships. (In other

words, the policy doesn’t involve consequences. It only provides

additional methods of support.)o A chance for the people involved to express their emotions about

the issue without being accusatory or placing blame on others.

STEP 2:

o Submit your conflict resolution policy using a method that works best for you. You can create a Keynote presentation, make a video using iMovie, write a poem, make a podcast; the possibilities are endless. You can even create cartoons using goanimate.com. It’s up to you!
