Historical Conversation Project Research Planning

The Historical Conversation Project, asks you to do four things:

(1) define and describe a significant political/social/cultural problem

(2) justify and frame this problem to convince an audience that the issue you’re addressing and the questions you’re asking are relevant right now

(3) summarize and critically evaluate various conversations and debates made by credible scholars and organizations about your topic

(4) describe and decipher the historical contexts of the problem at hand by locating evidence from both the past and the present that tie the problem as we see it today to its past.

Further consider points 1 and 2, and begin work on point 4. You have already selected a problem that you would like to address that is linked to our focus of global gender issues and directly tied to socioeconomic and/or racial inequities. Now, begin to strategize on the structure of your project.

Task one: narrow your project into one question that applies your chosen issue to a relevant framework.

Task two: free-write for ten minutes on each of the following structural areas to map-out a pathway to explore this project. In your introduction, focus on why your audience should care about your project. In your body paragraphs, decide how you will present your topic in such a way as to emphasize relevancy and urgency. Also determine where historical content may be advantageous—dispersed throughout or placed in its own subheading? In your conclusion, what proposal or solution might you offer to the audience?

he following situations have caused you to become concerned about the quality of the upcoming external audit:

• Because of the fact that the audit will not begin until February after the books have been closed, the external auditors will not be able to confirm the accounts receivable cutoff, physically examine the inventory, and examine other important procedures.
• You have just been advised that the auditing firm has been acquired by a larger auditing firm, and the auditor that is coming to Bovar Company will be unfamiliar with Bovar Company.
• One of the acquiring auditing firm’s principal partners is related to the chief executive officer (CEO) of Bovar Company.

Task 1: Infant Mortality Rates

The U.S. has higher infant mortality rates than other developed nations. In the course project, you will examine many aspects of this issue. Begin your investigation of infant mortality rates in the U.S. by gathering and analyzing statistical data.

• Gather data about infant mortality rates in various countries. Identify five countries that have the lowest infant mortality rates and five countries that have the highest infant mortality rates.
• Find out the infant mortality rate in the U.S. and evaluate how the U.S. ranks in comparison to your chosen countries.

Task 2: Medical Causes of Infant Mortality

Using the South University Online Library, select and read five articles in peer-reviewed journals, such as Journal of Epidemiology, Journal of Environment Health, and Journal of Applied Epidemiology, on medical causes of infant mortality.

Write an annotated bibliography of the five articles, which should include a one-paragraph summary of each article. Write original summaries; do not merely copy the abstracts. In each of your summaries, include the following:

Everyone, Thomas has made reference to the notion that the Constitution, for want of a better term, is a living document, open to interpretation.  That’s an incredibly contentious statement in today’s America, which seems to be divided between that statement, and one which begins with “If it was good enough for James Madison, it ought to be good enough for all of us”.

In addition it speaks to the scrutiny we place not only on sitting SC justices, but prospective ones as well. How do they view the Constitution?  Should judges be appointed only if they pledge to uphold the Constitution as written and intended by the Founding Fathers, or should the court accept justices who practice judicial interpretivism; a belief that the constitution is a living document and should be interpreted according to changing times and values?

For the final Portfolio Project, you will write a paper about a person or an event in a period of U.S. history up to Reconstruction that is relevant to your major area of study or of interest to you. You will write about this person or event from the perspective of another historical personality who lived at the same time as the person or event you are going to describe.

For your historical personality, try to select someone from an under-represented population (examples of possible perspectives include that of Anne Hutchinson, Pocahontas, or Sojourner Truth). This analysis is to make you think about how events/people’s actions were interpreted at the time.

Key Points::

• Remember that you will be writing from the perspective of a historical person about another person or an event from a period of U.S. history up to Reconstruction. From your historical person’s perspective, provide a thorough summary of the person or event you’ve chosen to write about, including the incidents that took place and any key individuals involved or affected.
• Address the general importance of the person or event in the context of U.S. history.
• Now, explain specifically how the person or event changed “your” daily life—“you” being the historical persona you have adopted.
• Think long-term: How will the person or the event you are describing make a long-term impact in the lives of people who are in the under-represented group to which your historical person/perspective belongs?

Paper Requirements:

• Your paper must be four to six pages, not including the required references and title pages.
• Use at least five sources, not including the textbook. Include a scholarly journal article. Include at least one primary source from those identified in the syllabus. Definition of a Primary Source: A primary source is any source, document or artifact that was created at the time of the event. It was usually created by someone who witnessed the event, lived during or even shortly afterwards, or somehow would have first-hand knowledge of that event. A secondary source, by contrast, is written by a historian or someone writing about the event after it happened.
• Have an introduction and strong thesis statement. Make use of support and examples supporting your thesis
• Finish with a forceful conclusion reiterating your main idea.
• Format your paper according to the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA Requirements.
