Statement of Problem

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Chapter 1 of your Dissertation Proposal introduces your research topic. You will spend a considerable amount of time developing and refining your statement of the problem in this course because this is the heart of your study. You will need to identify tangible evidence that illustrates that the problem exists and then identify why this problem must be studied. For an applied degree, the problem should be based in practice, and for a PhD the investigation of the problem needs to add to the body of knowledge.

You might wonder why what seems to be the straightforward concept of a problem statement requires so much refinement. You need to ensure that what you have identified as a problem with justifiable evidence is research worthy. It must be one that is important to you, your intended audience, and the academy of scholars in your discipline, not to mention others who might be influenced by the results of your study. Often students come in with a very broad topic idea that must be whittled down into a manageable and narrower topic. Eventually, the problem statement builds into the purpose and provides context for the need of the study. The research questions will be written to address the problem and purpose within the context of the study.

Discussion question/ fill in

Why is debugging flawed processes important? Can you think of any customer situations you are involved with (either as a customer or employee) that could be debugged?

What is integrated and aligned to make Quality Service? What is the goal of integration?

Your family would like you to handle social media on behalf of Hearth and Home Hardware. Using the drop down menu, match each of the following descriptions to the social media tool it represents.

Record videos of various “how to” projects and upload them so that customers can watch online.
Write about specific tools and projects, along with photos of each step, and post on a website for customers to learn about the store’s products and services.
Use #HearthHomeTip to identify your store’s home-improvement tips posted on Twitter and Facebook.
Create an online activity that challenges players to “build” a home in competition with other players.

You believe social media communities could help increase exposure for Hearth and Home Hardware, because so many people are interested in do-it-yourself home improvement projects. Indicate whether each of these statements about social media communities is true or false.

A forum acts like an interactive community bulletin board to connect stakeholders and target their interests.
A wiki allows members, such as store shoppers, to compete with each other in a goal-oriented activity with defined rules of engagement.
Social media communities encourage two-way communication among friends, fans, followers, or connections.
The point of a wiki is to encourage community members to contribute information and keep content correct and updated.

You have to take a number of steps as you develop a social media plan for Hearth and Home Hardware. Determine which five of the following six steps are part of the process for building a social media plan, and arrange those five in order using the drop down menu.

Segment and target the social customer

Establish social media objectives

Implement and integrate the plan

Listen to determine opportunities

Plan inbound marketing

Select social media tools

Before you actually implement your social media plan, you want to prepare for measuring the results. Categorize each of the following as either a quantitative or a qualitative measurement.

Setting a benchmark for how many visitors the blog should attract.
Determining whether customers are or are not satisfied.
Determining if customers are satisfied with the time it takes to resolve customer service issues.
Counting the number of followers and likes for the store’s social media accounts.
Measuring the click through rate of links posted in the store’s tweets.

Your family recently acquired a second hardware store in a neighboring town. With two stores and a solid social media presence, you think this is the time for Hearth and Home Hardware to expand into e-business. Use the drop down menu to classify each of the resources shown below as human, informational, material, or financial resources for your e-business.

Hire a designer to create the look and pages for the new website.
Arrange the systems to receive electronic payment from customers via PayPal or credit cards.
Acquire specialized retail software for the e-business.
Outsource installation of tracking systems for customer relationship management, orders, and shipping.
Order specialized computers and networking equipment.
Apply for a bank loan to cover the extra e-business expenses.
Contract with programmers to code the transactional capabilities of the new website.

Your family owns Hearth and Home Hardware, a local store that stocks tools and materials for do-it-yourself home and garden projects. When you work at the store on weekends, you’re often asked to demonstrate how certain tools are used. Also, customers ask for tips on completing projects such as installing a kitchen countertop or putting down a patio. How might your family’s store benefit from the use of social media? Select three reasons from the following list.

Before planning for your family’s possible e-business, you need to understand the different business models. Use the drop down menu to classify each of the following as an example of the business-to-business (B2B) model or the business-to-consumer (B2C) model.

A manufacturer develops a website to manage purchases from and relations with suppliers that sell it equipment, raw materials, and specialized services.
A lighting firm develops a website to accept orders for industrial lighting fixtures from business customers.
A retailer develops a website to sell children’s clothing and accessories to parents and grandparents.
An office furniture firm develops a website to sell ergonomic desks and chairs to small businesses.
An antiques dealer develops a website to sell Colonial-era items to collectors.

Because Hearth and Home Hardware will be embarking on an e-business venture, you need to be aware of ethical and legal concerns, as well as future challenges that you could face. Match each of the following descriptions with the corresponding key term.

Storing services on the Internet to be provided temporarily, as needed, to computer users.
Software that infiltrates a computer system without the user’s consent, often with criminal or malicious intent.
Searching through data records electronically to look for useful information.
A small piece of software sent by a website that tracks what individual Internet users do online.

Essay

Instructions: Choose one of the following topics below. You will have a total of three hours to complete your exam. Make certain that in addition to completing the prompt below, you also have included all of the elements of the “must-have” list below. Your grade will be based on your skills in the areas on the “must-have” list, which is the accumulation of all that you have learned this quarter.

Must Have List

  • An effective introduction using one of the five strategies for an opening: narrative, question, definition, quotation, unexpected statement
  • An effective thesis statement that responds to the prompt: an effective thesis is a restatement of the topic PLUS a comment on the topic! You must give your “take” on the topic in your thesis, one that will steer your essay.
  • A minimum of five body paragraphs: introduction, three body and a conclusion.
  • A conclusion with a summary statement that sums up the essay and reinforces the thesis, as well as your concluding remarks.
  • Each paragraph must have a topic sentence that states the main idea of each paragraph. The other sentences in the paragraph support the topic sentence.
  • Your essay needs transitional words and phrases to take the reader from paragraph to paragraph and idea to idea.
  • You will need textual evidence from the story in each body paragraph. You need to use correctly formatted quote sandwiches.
  • Each paragraph must have a mix of sentence openings, sentence lengths, and sentence types. Do not write monotonous paragraphs of identical sentence types! Remember to use both compound and complex sentences!
  • Grammar and punctuation should be as flawless as possible.
  • Correct MLA formatting

TOPICS (CHOOSE ONLY ONE):

  1. How does Joyce Carol Oates foreshadow the events that befall Connie? In your essay, consider the ways the author uses foreshadowing to let the reader know that something will go awry. In your response, be careful to discuss the impact this has on you as a reader.
  2. In “The Things They Carried” Tim O’Brien discusses the hardships of war in a unique way: by focusing on the things each individual carries. In your essay, discuss why this technique is effective, and give examples of how it makes the story work. How is O’Brien able to say more about war with this technique than if he had not used it?
  3. In “Lust” the author, Susan Minot, seems to construct a list. How and why is this list effective for the meaning of her story? This is a rare technique for an author to use. Give examples of how it is effective, and how in influences the overall impact of her story.
  4. In “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” the author F. Scott Fitzgerald creates a situation that could never happen in real life. You could almost call it fantasy or science fiction. Discuss why an author would use an event or series of events that are contrary to fact. What impact does it have on your experience as a reader?

Terrorism

Introduction:Terrorism is a crime against the public. The crime of terrorism is defined by its public nature in that it is intended to harm or disrupt the government. Terrorism is not a new or novel crime, and has been used by those with political, ideological, or religious intentions through history. However, recent events and novel technological approaches have increased its threat to domestic security and led to increased awareness and attention by lawmakers. The common elements of terrorism are as follows: 1) the commission of an already established crime, 2) the intention to coerce a population or influence a government, and 3) through the use of intimidation or fear. The crime of terrorism may transcend the boundaries of the United States, which is considered international terrorism, or it may be primarily within the boundaries of the U.S., which constitutes domestic terrorism. This crime may take the form of bio-terrorism, aiding terrorists, financing terrorists, and the use of weapons of mass destruction, which are all separate federal crimes. Various federal laws have been enacted in response to terrorist acts (for example FISA, AEDPA, and the USA Patriot Act).

Hypothesis Testing for One Sample, assignment help

Use the
Student_Data.xls file which consists of 200 MBA students at Whatsamattu U. The
file includes variables regarding students’ age, gender, major, GPA, Bachelors
GPA, course load, English speaking status, family, weekly hours spent studying.
Each of the three assigned problems should be formatted as a one page memo.
Answers to all three of the problems should be submitted via the Drop Box as a
single Word document with each of the problems clearly labeled. Be sure to
include your name on the document itself!

COMPLETE PROBLEM 1:
It is pretty common across most schools to find the grades at the MBA level
divided between A’s and B’s. As such, you expect the mean GPA to be around
3.50. Using the sample of 200 MBA students, conduct a one-sample hypothesis
test to determine if the mean graduate GPA is different from 3.50. Use a .05 significance
level. Report on your findings (100+ words, 3 or more sentences). In your
report, be sure to include the results of the hypothesis test and indicate
whether you are using a two-tail, upper-tail, or lower-tail test.
Also include a chart (a bar chart or column chart will probably work best)
comparing the calculated mean with the hypothesized mean.

COMPLETE PROBLEM 2: Assume
you read in the Whatsamatta U website that the average age of their MBA
students is 45. Is this really true or have they failed to update this
correctly? You think it is far less because more students have started their
Masters sooner since the economy is so bad. You took a sample of 200 students
(in the data file). Conduct a one-sample hypothesis test to determine if the
mean age is less than 45. Use a .05 significance level. Report on your findings
(100+ words, 3 or more sentences). In your report, be sure to include the
results of the hypothesis test and indicate whether you are using a two-tail,
upper-tail, or lower-tail test. Also include a chart (a bar chart or column
chart will probably work best) comparing the calculated mean with the
hypothesized mean.

COMPLETE PROBLEM 3: You
have heard from idle chatter that most students don’t declare a major in their
MBA programs. You took a sample of 200 students (in the data file). Conduct a
one-sample hypothesis test to determine if the proportion without a major is
greater than 50%. Use a .05 significance level. Report on your findings (100+
words, 3 or more sentences). In your report, be sure to include the results of
the hypothesis test and indicate whether you are using a two-tail, upper-tail,
or lower-tail test. Also include a chart (a bar chart or column chart will
probably work best) comparing the calculated proportion with the hypothesized
proportion.

*Note: you are
testing sample date to some stated norm or Null.  You have to choose which of the three
directions for the one sample tests that you will perform based on the wording
in the problem set.  (two-tailed, upper
tailed, or lower tailed). You would only use one of the three.

***The only charts
that I am interested in you providing for your homework are the output charts
from the one sample tests.  You do not
need to create additional bar or pie charts for the future units.  Use the
“Solutions To Practice Problems” as your guide for formatting your work and
writing your analysis**. Finished work should look like the Practice Problems
file that I uploaded.

Please follow the instructions thoroughly and let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Make sure to use the files I uploaded.
