Motor-Skill Learning

Motor-Skill Learning

This week’s assignment takes 3 days, so you will need to get started ASAP! It should be a fun learning experience though. I think many of us forget what it’s like to really learn a motor task, so this activity helps us experience what it is like for children and others who are learning those tasks. Enjoy! I look forward to reading through how this went for everyone. I usually always get some interesting responses about after-effects, etc. of this process.

I also want to stress that you will need to read from the book about the theory of motor-skill learning that is the best fit: Adam’s Two-Stage Theory, Schmidt’s Schema Theory and Battig’s Contextual Interference Theory. The discussion of open and closed loop movements are simply TYPES of motor skills, not theories. So be careful with that.

Good luck this week and happy tracing!

Assignment 1: Discussion—Motor-Skill Learning

Motor learning leads to a relatively permanent change in physical movements and activity of a person. This type of learning is related to acquiring processes needed for complex movements like speaking or playing the piano, which often start out as very difficult but through practice, they become much smoother and accurate. Additionally, motor-skill learning plays an important role in interpreting simple movements, such as reflexes, as the body and environment change. Therefore, though we may not be completely aware of motor learning as it takes place, it is a vital area of learning that is related to almost everything we do.

Complete the Motor Training Activity at the following link:

Based on the activity, address the following:

  • Discuss your outcome with this activity. What did you learn about motor learning?
  • Based on your readings, identify which theory of motor-skill learning best fits this activity. Why do you consider it to be the best fit?
  • Apply what you have learned during this activity to a real-life learning experience, either for yourself, or for someone you are teaching.

Write your initial response in 2–3 paragraphs. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

By Friday, October 25, 2013, post your response to the appropriate Discussion Area.

Grading Criteria and Rubric

All discussion assignments in this course will be graded using a rubric. Download the discussion rubric and read it carefully to understand the expectations.

LASA 1—Afterschool Depot: Channel Design and Implementation Plan

Janet Hains is an entrepreneur and former afterschool programmer administrator. She has been monitoring the education industry for potential trends that may provide an opportunity for her to utilize her experience in starting a new business. In response to an identified increase in childhood obesity rates within the United States, coupled with the increased governmental grant offerings for youth nutrition programs, Janet has started a new company, Afterschool Depot.

Afterschool Depot will produce and sell materials to assist afterschool programmers in implementing nutrition-based programs. Afterschool Depot has just finalized its initial product line and is now in the process of preparing to market its line for sale within the United States as well as several international locations.

Due to financial and human resource constraints, Janet has decided to produce and sell only one product from the proposed product line during the first year of operation. She has selected the Healthy Kitchen to be her first product launch.

The Healthy Kitchen is a mobile kitchen that can be wheeled out onto the playground or into the classroom. It includes an 8-week curriculum to assist afterschool programmers in conducting healthy cooking classes.

Although Afterschool Depot has spent considerable time researching and developing the initial product line, they have not spent much time on developing their overall marketing strategy to include its channel design and implementation plan.

Assume that you have been hired as the channel manager for Afterschool Depot. Beth Nammons, Marketing Director for Afterschool Depot, has assigned you to develop the channel design and implementation plan. She has asked that you complete the following three tasks in your report:

  1. Assess the four target markets that the company has selected.
  2. Determine whether Afterschool Depot should include wholesalers as channel members or sell directly to retailers.
  3. Prepare an instructional explanation that will help Beth understand the role of vertical integration in channel design and present your analysis of whether vertical integration will be valuable to Afterschool Depot.

TASK 1:

Being aware that the first step in the channel design process is to segment the target market, assume that you reviewed the Healthy Kitchen’s target market analysis performed by Beth. Your review uncovered the information shown in the table below.

Target Market

Buying Process

Purchasing Requirement

Pertinent Information

U.S. Public School District Administrators

Buying decision is made at district level; thus district buyer purchases for all schools within its district.

Must obtain an approved purchase order prior to placing order.
Will not accept invoice prior to product delivery. Payment is delivered within 30 days of receiving invoice.

Some public school programs have received twenty-first century grant funds that must be spent within this fiscal year.

Private Afterschool Program Administrators

Buying decision is made by individual program administrators; thus the administrator would purchase for his or her own program.

Does not require an approved purchase order prior to placing order. Will accept invoice prior to product delivery. Half the payment is provided at the time of placing the order. Rest of the payment is provided upon delivery.

Some private programs have received twenty-first century grant funds that must be spent within this fiscal year.

Youth Weight Camp Administrators

Buying decision is made by individual camp administrators; thus administrator would purchase for his or her own program.

Does not require an approved purchase order prior to placing order. Will accept invoice prior to product delivery. Half the payment is provided at the time of placing the order. Rest of the payment is provided upon delivery.

Youth Weight Camps have not been awarded twenty-first century funds.

Department of Defense Afterschool Program Administrators

Buying decision is made at the regional level; thus regional buyer purchases for all military base programs within their region.

Must obtain an approved purchase order prior to placing order. Will not except invoice prior to product delivery. Payment is delivered within 30 days of receiving invoice.

Department of defense provides substantial budget for afterschool programs that are not tied to grant spending timelines or specifications.

To complete Task 1, you are to assess the four identified target markets using the service output demand (SOD) template in Word format for your analysis. Include the completed template and a 1-2 page explanation of your analysis as the first subset of your report to Beth. Prepare your report in MS Word format.

TASK 2:
To complete Task 2, you should use the target market information and your SOD analysis to determine whether including wholesalers as channel members will assist in creating a sustainable competitive advantage for Afterschool Depot. The alternative is to sell directly to retailers.

In order to make a well-informed decision, you assessed Afterschool Depot’s internal constraints that may affect channel member selection. Your assessment identified warehouse space and the sales representative compensation budget as potential constraints.

Once you have determined whether to include wholesalers as channel members, you must complete your analysis using the efficiency chart template in Word format. Include the completed template and a 1-2 page explanation of your analysis as the second subset of your report to Beth

Task 3 requires you to prepare an instructional explanation to Beth that will help her understand the following:

  • The role of vertical integration in channel design
  • Your analysis of whether vertical integration will be valuable to Afterschool Depot
  • Your recommendation regarding whether the company should plan to utilize vertical integration.

Write 2-3 pages that address Task 3 to include as the third subset of your report to Beth.

Prepare your completed report (tasks 1, 2 and 3) in MS Word format and submit the entire report for grading. Apply APA standards for writing style to all of your work. Use the following file naming convention:

How Does This Relate to Me?, week 4 journal help

How Does This Relate to Me?

Prior to beginning this journal entry, read “The Development of Expertise in Performance: The Role of Memory, Knowledge, Learning, and Practice” and “Transitions and the Development of Expertise,” as well as review all other required resources. It is important for you to have already completed your initial post in the “Learning Trends” discussion before you compose this journal entry.

Part 1: As you were reading this week, what vocabulary was used that was unfamiliar to you or might be to your peers? Identify three to five words from this week’s content and research each word in the context of learning and cognition. Explain, in your own words, what each word means and how it is used in the context of learning and cognition.

Part 2: Based on the week’s discourse and content, you will access the Ashford University Library and research one scholarly article pertaining to expertise that was published within the last 10 years. Provide a summary explanation of the findings on “expertise” in the context of your article. What implications should scholars consider based on this information? Support your explanation utilizing this week’s resources and your researched article.

Part 3: Consider the events from the past week of your life. How does expertise, or the perception of it, affect our behaviors, actions, and knowledge development? Describe one personal real-life example of an occurrence that supports the implications of actual expertise, or the perception of it, on our behaviors and actions toward others. As you share this information, consider and apply the professional standards found in “12.06 Anonymity of Sources”found in the AERA Code of Ethics.

Part 4: Review “Principle A: Professional Competence” in the AERA Code of Ethics. What implications should be considered in your scholarly writing and observations? How might you check for competence of the research in articles and research studies you read? Explain the public impression(s) and misconception(s) that can occur when secular articles or studies (e.g., Yahoo survey results, newspaper reports) are used instead of findings from peer-reviewed sources.

Each journal entry should be 400 to 700 words in length and should establish your understanding of the content, apply appropriate methods of ethical practices, and exhibit appropriate scaffolding of personal experience to the week’s content.

Initial Post:CBT is rising in popularity among clinicians and the approach has expanded greatly. What do you think accounts for the fact that CBT has this place in the field of psychotherapy?Explain your ideas.Be sure to connect your response to something you learned in Chapter 10.To clearly illustrate that connection, your response must contain the page number from the textbook in order to earn full credit.

plus 1 respond to classmate

I think the rising popularity of CBT among clinicians and the expansion of this approach is due to a number of reasons. I think that the “present-centered, time-limited focus” (10-1) is conducive to a system wherein insurance coverage will not provide for a lengthy therapeutic process. The managed care we are becoming more used to in today’s system can provide a sense of urgency and need for direction which the less constricted systems of the past did not have. In this environment, an “active and directive stance by the therapist” along with “an educational treatment focusing on specific and targeted problems” (10-1) can seem more necessary than in the past, given the constraints mental health professionals have to come up with a specific diagnosis and work to provide evidence that they have been success in alleviating the severity of symptoms of this diagnosis. While I find that there can be benefits to this emphasis on psychoeducation, clear-cut goals, and therapeutic direction, I think that the overly empirically- and medically-based direction which managed care can push therapists toward can be harmful as well. We are not only strict scientists or technicians, but there is also a sense of art, creativity, and aspects which are not always quantifiable.

In addition to the influence of the managed care system, I think that the various orientations which fall under the umbrella of CBT have their many merits which can make them useful for many different clients. For instance, the fact that “both cognitive therapy and cognitive behavioral therapies are based on a structured psychoeducational model, make use of homework, [and] place responsibility on the client to assume an active role both during and outside therapy sessions” (10-1) all make this approach enticing for therapists and clients alike. I think this is true regardless of the orientation a therapist claims as their primary one, in that they can also incorporate the psychoeducational aspects along with CBT homework assignments like thought records, even if they do not consider themselves a CBT therapist. It is also an approach which is dynamic in that it examines how the various facets interact with one another to inform our situation. REBT, for example, “is based on the assumption that cognitions, emotions, and behaviors interact significantly and have a reciprocal cause-and-effect relationship” (10-2a). Rather than singling out one aspect of our experience, such as our brain chemistry, behavior, thoughts, or environment, the CBT approaches look at the interplay between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in a non-reductionistic way. The holistic approach emphasized by CBT is useful in that multiple modes of our experience are looked at to see how they inform one another. Additionally, surface cognitions are connected to one’s deeper conditional and core beliefs so that there are multiple levels to each aspect of our experience. The therapist does not only address the surface beliefs or interpretations, but eventually, though a close therapeutic relationship identifies which core beliefs these have developed from, and what occurred in their development to inspire certain maladaptive yet consistent underlying beliefs.

I really like this approach and find much truth in the idea that certain surface ideas are informed by more deep-seated ones. I also like the way in which the CBT approaches have research to back up their effectiveness (another reason for their widespread acceptance). In my practicum work I have incorporated many CBT homework assignments with different clients, such as thought records and cost/benefit charts. I think that there is something useful for any therapist in the CBT approach, even if they do not adopt all aspects of it into their therapy.

As you have explored in this course, ongoing challenges in the global business environment are mostly attributed to unethical business practices, failure to embrace technology advancements, and stiff competition among businesses. Imagine that you have been appointed as the Chief Compliance Officer of a Fortune 500 company of your choice and must prepare a presentation for your suppliers regarding your Supplier Code of Conduct to deliver via a web meeting.

This assignment has two parts. For the first part, you are to create a five to seven (5–7) minute dynamic video on your company’s Code of Conduct. You may use any type of recording device you have to create this video—smartphone, laptop, webcam, or other type of video recorder. The specific points to cover for this video are listed below.

As an alternative to the video, you may submit a four to six (4–6) page paper that details what you would say in such a presentation following the same prompts as the video assignment below.

For the second part of the assignment, you will create a presentation using PowerPoint (or other equivalent software) summarizing the important changes and explanations regarding the code of conduct that you communicated in your video/paper presentation to email to the suppliers after the meeting for future reference. The specific points to cover are listed below.

You must submit both parts of the assignment to receive full credit.

Note: If you are using a tablet or smartphone you will need to email the video file to yourself, then save it to a computer in order to upload to Blackboard. You may want to upload your video to a file sharing service, such as Dropbox, if your email will not let you send a large video file. Dropbox is accessible from all smartphones and tablets from the Dropbox app.

Once you are ready to upload your video to Blackboard, view the Kaltura video tutorial found in your online course shell (Week 9). Please use the following naming convention in the popup window for your video once it is finished uploading:

Specific Library Resources to help you get started

The Strayer University Library is accessible at research.strayer.edu.

A general introduction to the Strayer Library is available in your course shell on the left-hand menu under Research-Library.

  • Introductory Search – Use the home page’s search box to keyword search many, but not all, databases.
  • Targeted Search – Scroll to the bottom of the page for an A to Z listing of all databases. Float over each link to see a description of the database and click to load that particular database’s custom search page. Custom search pages include both basic and advanced search options.

These databases are only partially searchable through the general search bar. You will have to search them individually to find resources for your paper.

  • Nexis Uni – This contains legal information and would be useful to search for court cases in which your company has been involved.
  • Video Explaining Nexis Uni
  • Mergent Online – This has company info on both public and private companies. Fortune 500 can be public or private. Mergent is known for financial and accounting info, but also has qualitative information too. They offer news feeds, country reports on business environments, industry-wide reporting, company reports, and Annual Reports—the middle 3 are unique to this database. Starting with looking at a company’s annual report would be very useful for this assignment. Industry reports would also be useful to see if your company is involved in any industry-wide initiatives or is notable in its industry in any way (could be good or bad.)
  • Instructional Videos on each of the databases:

American City Business Journals – This is probably the most fun way to read business news by metro area. They have over 35 journals based around US cities. Look up the metro area your company is associated with, go to ACBJ, then choose the applicable city, and search for news articles.

Research Starters are like the academic version of Wikipedia. Search on a topic to get an overview with links to other information within that topic. It will help you get ideas for keywords for your own searches and what you need to know in order to successfully write your paper.

Note – This is an exception example. Research Starter articles do appear in a feature box above the results list when using the general search box on research.strayer.edu.

Don’t stress over writing papers! Watch this video on writing papers and essays. Topics include how to start your research, how to organize your research, how to draft your paper, and how to revise it.

Grading for this assignment will be based on answer quality, logic / organization of the paper, and language and writing skills, using the rubric.

Competitors in the Market IKEA

Within the Discussion Board area, write 600–800 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.

You talk with Mike and Tiffany at lunch. “You’ve done some great research and brought up some good ideas to implement in the presentation,” you say. “There is one element that we are missing.”

“One of the most important aspects of the strategy: our competitors,” Tiffany states.

“I’ve already done some analysis, and there are many in the global market. It seems like there are several office furniture companies thriving, but not as many custom furniture manufacturers,” Mike elaborates.

“Well, we need to provide the board with some solid competitors. I’ll work on finding our top two,” you say. Complete the following:

  • Who are your top 2 global competitors in the market?
  • Provide a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis for each competitor.
  • Why are they direct competitors?
  • What is their competitive advantage?
  • Could you form a cooperative strategy with any of the competitors?
    • If so, how?
    • If not, why?
  • What strategies could you use to build a competitive market profile?
  • What is balanced scorecard?

The materials found in the M.U.S.E. may help you with this assignment. In addition to your textbook material, here are a few resources that may help you learn more about the basics of the balanced scorecard:

Need a 3 page case study in reference to fallacies. Is anyone familiar with fallacies?

You are the district manager of a luxury watch producer, and sales have been steadily declining. You hold a meeting with your production and sales staff to attempt to identify the reasons for the decline, and the following reasons are offered for the decreased sales:

  • slow economy, so no one is buying watches of any kind;
  • salespeople are not provided adequate resources to properly market the watches;
  • the quality of the watches has declined to the point that people do not want to buy them;
  • the supply chain is unable to keep up with orders, so deliveries are slow, and customers are cancelling orders;
