From Problem to Persuasion

In this journal assignment, select two potential problems that a) have two logical sides to the issue (your viewpoint and an opposing viewpoint); b) are researchable; and c) are related to your career or degree.

For your submission, write a fully developed paragraph for each problem (5-8 sentences each) explaining two sides to the issue (how is it argumentative?), how you plan to approach it in your project (what side are you going to take?), and why you’re personally interested in it (of all the potential problems in your field or degree, why did you choose this?).

When writing the paragraphs, feel free to express any other thoughts or concerns you may have about the topic choices.

After exploring the argumentativeness of your problems, take a moment to consider the bigger picture. Then, in one to two paragraphs, briefly reflect on the importance of persuasion with the potential topic you are most likely to write about. Why is it important that people consider your side with your selected topic? Who is your audience, and why is it important to convince them that your view on your topic is the better (or more correct) view? Remember to try to be specific in your entry, as this information will help guide you as you work on your project in the coming weeks.

Comparison of the Odyssey with either Inferno or The Song of Roland

The major assignment for this week is to compose a 900-word essay comparing The Odyssey with either The Song of Roland or Dante’s Inferno.
In this paper you will write an in-depth analysis using your own ideas
and excerpts from the epic poems in the form of quotes, paraphrase, or
summary.

Pick a Topic

First, identify a topic in consultation with your instructor or write about one of the following options:

  1. Although nearly two thousand years separate The Odyssey and Dante’s Inferno, both works are epic poems that:
    • Explore the theme of good versus evil.
    • Employ journey as a metaphor for maturation.
    • Reveal and teach cultural values about leadership.
    • Caution audiences about the appeal of temptation.
    • Contemplate the nature of immortality.

Compare and contrast how one or two of these topics is developed in The Odyssey and Dante’s Inferno.
Be sure to contextualize your examination in the cultural values,
philosophies, literary movements, and ideas that typify each work. Use
literary perspectives to enrich your analysis.

  1. The Song of Roland and The Odyssey,
though separated by thousands of years, are both epic works whose
protagonists are warriors engaged in violent conflict: Roland is a
medieval Crusader and Odysseus is on a long journey home after
    conquering Troy. Additionally, both works:

    • Explore the theme of good versus evil.
    • Reveal and teach cultural values about leadership.
    • Contemplate the nature of immortality.
    • Examine the moral and practical implications of loyalty and betrayal.

Compare and contrast the figures Roland and Odysseus by
considering whether and/or how they exhibit the characteristics of an
epic hero. Be sure to contextualize your examination in the cultural
values, philosophies, literary movements, and ideas that typify each
work. Use literary perspectives to enrich your analysis.

Develop a Tentative Thesis

As you consider different options for your thesis,

  • Develop a few hypotheses about the text that are
based on your own perspectives and relate to the topic that you chose
    to explore for this assignment.
  • In addition to considering the texts’ plots,
reflect on the role(s) that genre and other elements of literature (see
the online lecture on this topic) play in revealing medieval Western
European and ancient Greek cultures, including important philosophies
and values associated with these regions and eras.
  • Review the lectures on literary movements and
literary perspectives (feminist, psychoanalytic, and historicist
perspectives on literature) and identify which of these analytical
tools best supports the ideas that you are beginning to develop.

Read the following scenario.

The purpose of this assignment is to determine when business assets may constitute intellectual property (IP), to analyze when an IP theft has occurred and possible remedies for IP theft, and to assess the importance of protecting and enforcing IP rights in a business setting.

Read the following scenario.

Futuretek sells high-tech computer chips and software to smartphone manufacturers worldwide. Futuretek maintains two software databases: one containing Futuretek’s customer list with nonpublic contact information for key personnel, and the other containing customer purchasing trends. The information in the two databases is available for employees to view and use in connection with their job duties.

Dana is a computer programmer for Futuretek. Dana plans to run her own company one day and design and sell her own computer chips to smartphone companies. As an employee, she has access to the two databases containing Futuretek’s key purchaser and purchasing trends information.

Dana decides to leave Futuretek and start her own computer chip business. Before she leaves, she makes a copy of the two databases on a portable hard drive. Dana uses the information to contact Futuretek’s customers and offer them cheaper, but comparable, computer chips manufactured by Dana’s new company, SmartChip.

Futuretek becomes aware of Dana’s actions and asks you, the chief operations officer, for advice and recommendations on what to do.

In a 10-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation, complete the following:

  • Determine whether Dana has taken Futuretek’s intellectual property (IP), and if so, describe the type(s) of IP that was taken.
  • Explain any civil actions in tort or criminal actions that may be brought against Dana or SmartChip.
  • Assume Futuretek sues SmartChip, and Futuretek wins the lawsuit. Recommend ethical policies that SmartChip can put into place to prevent future legal claims and litigation against the company.
  • Recommend risk management procedures that Futuretek can implement to avoid or limit this type of activity from happening to the company in the future.

Change the Legal Drinking Age?

After the National Minimum Drinking Age Act went into effect in 1984, the minimum legal age for purchasing alcohol was raised to 21 for every state in the U.S. The readings for this week and for Week 7 (see Gruenewald [2011]) describe some of the apparent consequences of this alcohol-control policy. Alcohol use and alcohol-related problems have steadily declined for the past several decades and the rate of teenage drinking is lower in the U.S. than in most European nations. These and other epidemiological patterns and trends have led some observers to argue that the legal alcohol purchase age should be even higher, perhaps 25 years old or more. On the other hand, many other people argue that the current drinking age is unnecessarily high and unfair to young people, and that it should be lowered again to 18 or 19 in the U.S. What do you think? Should the legal drinking age be raised, lowered, or remain the same? In 200 words or more, state your position on this issue and use evidence from readings to support your views about the consequences of changing the legal drinking age.

Your replies should also refer to material from the assigned readings for this week or last week.

TESCO Accounting Scandal: Write a brief report and crisis press release sample (450 words)

Background:

In 2014, Britain’s biggest retailer TESCO faces a crisis situation two weeks after announcing that it overstated its first-half profit expectations by some £250-million. TESCO reported on September 22, 2014 that its August 29 profit warning should have forecasted trading profit totalling £850-million, rather than the £1.1-billion that the company actually reported – an inflation of nearly 25%.

Scenario:

Imagine you are the PR practitioner in TESCO and you have to write a press release to announce this serious issue. However, before sending the press release to all the media, you have to write a letter to the CEO to reported on the issue and show him the press release sample. Therefore, this letter to CEO should contain the following information:

  • Brief of situation (150 words):

First, introduce the main issue and how this problem was uncovered. (The problem was uncovered by a whistleblower from within Sainsbury, who sent an email to the in-house counsel, informing about the wrong figures.)

Next, tell CEO you will send the press release to all the financial media, such as The Financial Times, because the TESCO scandal will mainly influence investors in the stock market, and those financial media are the main media investors read.

  • A Press Release Sample (300 words)
    (please follow the structure bellow)

Title:

(Ex. Apologize for overstating first-half results by £250m)

Content:

  • State the issue:

Admitted that TESCO have uncover a serious issue, which is “the first-half profits were overstated by an estimated £250m.”

  • Possible cause of the issue

Explain that the issue is “principally due to the accelerated recognition of commercial income and delayed accrual of costs, as well as timing differences. The problems were focused on the UK food business.”

  • Investigation

TESCO take actions immediately, they asked Deloitte to undertake a comprehensive investigation of their accounts. For example, you can write: “Work is ongoing to establish the extent of these issues and what impact they will have on the full year.”

  • CEO’s Expectation

Declare that four undisclosed senior directors who involved in this have been suspended while the investigation is undergoing. And emphasize on CEO’s expectation: “The board, my colleagues, our customers and I expect Tesco to operate with integrity and transparency and we will take decisive action as the results of the investigation become clear. (Please paraphrase it)”

  • Note that you will release additional information once you have more facts.

Shakespeare Discussion

I need some one to answer this discussion:

You should read “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day” (I’ll send you the poem).

Your initial post should respond
to all questions below and should be between 250-300 words. In your
response, be sure to include reference to specific details from the
poem.

1) What patterns do you notice in the poem?

2) What aspects of the poem deviate from the patterns that you noticed?

3) How does the couplet (the last two lines) shed light on the relationship between poetry and love?

4) What questions do you still have regarding the poem’s meaning?

In addition, you will need to respond meaningfully to TWO of my classmates’ posts, and those responses should be at least 100 words. I can reach to them after I post the discussion’s answers.

Give me please four topics in accounting for term paper (10 pages)

I want you to give me four topics in accounting for term paper (10 pages). Also, I want you to write for each one the reason why I am going to write about them in six to eight sentences.

My teacher sent this message to me, and I want you to follow what he wants.

I am looking for depth, not breadth in your papers. I have asked some individuals to narrow their topic, not broaden it. I look for more analysis and critical thinking than what I read when looking at a newspaper article.

What I want you all to think about is trying to write a “white paper”. What I would like each one of you to do is consider yourself an “issuing body” as defined below.

I will be happy to discuss this with all of you at the same time in class this Wednesday.

Here is the Wikipedia definition of a “white paper”:

“A white paper is an authoritative report or guide that informs readers concisely about a complex issue and presents the issuing body’s philosophy on the matter. It is meant to help readers understand an issue, solve a problem, or make a decision.”

Also, I want you to support the following topic by supporting the reason why I am going to write about it. by giving six to eight sentences.

The
importance of internal audit in preserving the company’s tangible assets.

PPT Presentation to Lender?

Analyze the pro forma statements and analysis created in the previous module (see Pro Forma Budget in attachment) and create a detailed PowerPoint presentation with speaker’s notes to demonstrate why the bank should give your company a loan. The amount requested and loan terms should be financially manageable and you need to justify the amount requested in your presentation. Your presentation should include:

  • A clear explanation of how much money is being requested from the lender and how the money will be used to expand the business.
  • General explanation of the business; who are the customers, where is it located, how long has it been in existence, etc.
  • An overview of the 12 Month Pro Forma Budgeted Income Statement created in the previous module with ratios.
  • An analysis of the year end income statement that includes key financial ratios.
  • An overview of the financial strengths and weaknesses of the company and an explanation of how those elements will be leveraged and minimized to ensure that the loan will be a good solid investment and financially manageable. Make sure to use financial ratios to support your argument and help sell this idea to the lender.
  • Finally, keep in mind that the audience of this presentation will be the lender and that the goal of this presentation is to sell the Cloud Ware company as a good investment to the potential lender.

Save your assignment as a Microsoft PowerPoint document.
