one peer-reviewed journal article related to effective treatment approaches for juveniles

Theorists such as Jean Piaget and Erik Erikson have documented the psychological skills and psychosocial needs of juveniles as being different from those of adults. Juveniles of different age groups have differing supervision needs. Even children of the same age may have significantly different needs. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the needs of juvenile offenders in forensic treatment settings are unique from those of their adult counterparts.

Restrictions in treatment environments often impact the overall treatment process for juvenile offenders. Juvenile courts may mandate treatment, and parents may refuse to be part of the change process. In addition, drug abuse, sexuality, peer relationships, gangs, and violence can all complicate treatment efforts when treating juvenile offenders. Forensic treatment practitioners must be acutely aware of juvenile (minor’s) rights in their locales as well as the laws surrounding juvenile offender treatment.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Conduct an Internet search or search the Walden library, and select one peer-reviewed journal article related to effective treatment approaches for juveniles. Think about how effective treatment approaches and programs for juveniles differ from those for treating adult offenders. Consider how the approaches and programs for these two forensic populations are similar.
  • Think about the unique characteristics of juvenile offenders, and reflect on considerations related to the treatment of juvenile offenders.
  • Select at least two similarities and two differences between juvenile and adult offender treatment approaches and programs.

With these thoughts in mind:

By Day 3

Post a comparison (similarities and differences) between juvenile and adult offender treatment approaches and programs. Explain at least two similarities and two differences related to treatment approaches and treatment programs. Explain at least one conclusion you drew or insight you gained as a result of your comparison.

Stress, Health, and Adjustment

We will examine the physiological and emotional aspects of stress and health and how personality factors and behaviors interact with stress to produce different reactions. Physics defines stress as pressure exerted on a body. Psychological forces, or stresses, also put force on a body. Stress is the demand made on an organism to adapt.

Some stress is healthy and useful. It keeps us alert and motivates us. We even seek it out. Stress that we interpret as overwhelming because we cannot cope with it effectively can have a negative effect on us mentally and physically. Since many of you lead stressful lives, you may appreciate the timely investigation of some effective means of coping with stress and problem-solving strategies. We will discuss the connection between psychological and physical illnesses and health.

Stress

The sympathetic nervous system responds to stressors by preparing the body for fight or flight. Our heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration rate increase, while unnecessary bodily functions, such as digestion, are temporarily shut down. This fight-or-flight response prepares us to handle immediate stressors. When the stressor is no longer present, the parasympathetic nervous system helps us return to normal. When stressors are present for more extended periods of time, we may fail to adjust to them, and the ongoing response of fight-or-flight can threaten our health.

Stressful events alone do not determine how our bodies react to stress. Coping strategies refer to a person’s ability to handle stress through thoughts or actions. Experts have linked some personality characteristics with a stronger ability to manage stress. Optimism, hardiness, religious and social involvement, social support, and perceived control are all associated with a better outcome in stressful situations. How we perceive the stressful event is even more important than the event itself.

Generally speaking, better health is associated with better ability to cope with stress, not necessarily a less stressful life. Lifestyle, heredity, and personality are shown to be factors in coronary heart disease, among other illnesses. While there is not much you can do about the heredity factors, you can work on changing your lifestyle and coping strategies. Research has shown that some lifestyle choices, such as smoking and alcohol abuse, can increase health risks. Making decisions to improve your diet and take the time to exercise can improve your health overall. Exercise also has the benefits of improving mood, boosting energy level, promoting sleep, and enhancing enjoyment of life.

How would you describe the benefits of creating SMART goals to a recent high-school graduate who is about to start college?

QUESTION #1

In Week 2 we examined items that can prevent you from reaching your goals and we discussed how to avoid procrastination and set priorities. This week, we explore how to set goals and look at impacts of stress in our lives. Your readings will cover SMART goal setting, overcoming obstacles, and stress management.

Before responding to the discussion, consider your own goals and the obstacles or stressors that you may face.

  • How would you describe the benefits of creating SMART goals to a recent high-school graduate who is about to start college?
  • Reflect on one of your own personal, academic,or professional goals. Which of the SMART components might need to be revisited, and why?
  • One obstacle to achieving our goals is stress. What are some of your current stressors? What strategies or coping skills can you use to address that source of stress?

QUESTION #2

Last week we investigated goal setting, how to overcome obstacles, and ways to manage stress. This week, we learn about the importance of self-esteem, self-acceptance, and the power of positive thinking. Our readings discuss self-esteem and how it relates to the self-talk you use internally and the confidence you have in yourself.

Reflect on the self-talk you use internally and how this impacts your confidence, attitude, and thinking habits.

  • What are the differences among self-esteem, self-image, and self-value? Why does it help to differentiate among these terms?
  • In your own words, why do self-esteem and attitude matter?
  • What are some things we might do to increase how much we value and respect ourselves?

QUESTION #3

During the last 4 weeks, you reflected on what success looks like, how to manage your time, setting attainable goals, and the importance of self-esteem and positive thinking. In our final week we examine intrinsic and extrinsic motivation along with self-discipline. Motivation helps drive us toward our goals while self-discipline and critical thinking can keep us on track.

Consider your own motivation and decision making habits that can either drive you toward or push you away from your goals.

  • What are some goals you have set for yourself?
  • Reflect on your own self-discipline and critical thinking habits. What are some changes you have made over the last 5 weeks to remain focused on your goals?
  • What strategies can you use to remain committed to and on track towards achieving your goals over the next 12 months?
  • What role does intrinsic and extrinsic motivation play in your ability to achieve your goals?

role and importance of family in the treatment of juvenile offenders.

Children often come from varying relationships. They are sons, daughters, cousins, grandchildren, students, or even wards. These relationships are dynamic, and as children age they establish their identity and individuality independent of others. At the same time, children typically rely on others for guidance and support. The goal of a child’s developmental process is to reach adulthood having the ability to act independently and responsibly in the context of established relationships such as the family. This is important to consider when selecting treatment approaches and providing treatment to juvenile offenders. In addition, it is important to consider the benefits and liabilities of involving the family or supportive adults in the treatment of juvenile offenders.

To prepare for this Assignment, consider the role and importance of family in the treatment of juvenile offenders.

The Assignment (1–2 pages):

  • Explain the role and importance of family in the treatment of juvenile offenders. Be specific.
  • Explain how forensic treatment practitioners can involve family in the treatment of juvenile offenders. Then, explain the benefits and challenges to the family’s involvement.
  • Use examples from the resources and from your own research to illustrate your points.

Support your Assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation. You are asked to provide a reference list only for those resources not included in the resources for this course.

Professional Development Plan

PowerPoint Presentation of Your Professional Development Plan Prepare a PowerPoint presentation of your Professional Development Plan (PDP) using no more than 6–8 slides. The PDP should incorporate elements within your specific Program Tab and must address the following: 1. Where have you been in your life personally and professionally that has brought you to this point? 2. What is your motivation in choosing this career; why did you choose this profession and aspiration? 3. How does your personal and professional community factor in to the realization of your aspirations—what support mechanisms do you have in place to help you meet your goals? 4. What are the things you foresee that might get in the way of your plan, and how will you overcome them as well as help others overcome theirs? 5. Share about your future self. Where do you want to go professionally, and how will you leverage your Walden experience to become this person? What is the best advice you would give yourself now from the point of success when you finish?

Make use of the Notes section within PowerPoint to provide the details of your presentation

Your presentation should be explicit in its detail about what you plan to do at Walden to meet your personal and professional goals.

Why do an op-ed?

The purpose of this assignment is to give you the experience of writing about a popular issue in society. In many societies, civic-minded citizens have had outlets to make their voices heard. Although social media outlets are a new/effective digital service that allows us to post our opinions, these media are not properly vetted and our duty as citizens is to ensure that our communication is not only palatable to a wide audience but that it is also accurate. Op-eds are short for “opposite the editorial page.” They are opinion articles written and published in newspapers or magazines by authors not affiliated with the publication’s editorial board. Thus, the reason to do an op-ed is to call attention to a key issue in your community. Because these articles are reviewed by the editorial teams, you can include your publication on your resume when applying for jobs. Your voice and perspective are important, and Op-eds are a great place to add to the greater good.

Requirements:

  • Take a position on a social, political, educational, or cultural issue that relates to social psychology! For most of its history social psychology has been informed by current social issues, and so the links that you make to the class will likely be large in number. Op-eds are not literature reviews; they are opinion pieces. Please peruse the opinion page in this popular San Diego newspaper Union Tribune Opinion and this one for the New York Times NY Times Opinion for examples of how to write an opinion piece. Also, here is a nice link for some dos and don’ts for op-ed writing Tips for Aspiring Op-ed’ers
  • Cite at least one study on the topic of social psychology, using a description + a link. For example, “As Daniel Berry and Athena Cairo showed in a recent study people who practice only 10 minutes of meditation show greater kindness to others.” You should also describe what the study found. The description of the study should be brief (you don’t have much space!) and used to support your point. The study does not have to be one that we talked about in class. Remember experiments are stronger than correlational studies.
  • Approximately 800 – 1000 words; you can go longer if you show me that you are aiming for a publication that allows or encourages a longer op-ed. If you add this word count next to your application journals and the written portion of your exams, you will easily reach the 2500 words necessary to meet our university writing requirement.
  • Follow the general guidelines below. The format does not have to rigidly follow the structure covered in class.

Do’s

  • Think about a topic that interests you. I can’t tell you what to write about. That is on you! You can form a thesis statement based on (1) a topic this class has covered, or (2) an interest of yours on which this class has shed light (e.g., groupthink, bystander effect, ostracism, thought suppression; self-control).
  • The topic that interest you can come from anywhere. Sports, education, politics, traffic and other infrastructure issues, workplace performance, and other various social topics.
  • Hook your piece to something that has happened recently (more details below on this). The best hook is not necessarily a personal experience like “I was harassed on the street”, but rather something that your reader can relate to personally like “on Black Friday, US residents will hit the streets in large numbers in search of sales. How will they treat one another there.” Or more traditionally, your hook will be news on the global, national, or local level, or from within academia. So you could say “Last week in a small town in North Dakota…”, or you could say “CSUSM students yesterday received a public safety email that said…”, etc. etc.
    • Write in a way that is interesting to the reader. Remember they won’t have the same level of experience and breadth of knowledge that you will possess in terms of social psychology. Describe your position in a way that your PSYC 100 self would be interested.
    • Leading with statistics on deaths and money are great at grabbing attention. Telling a story about a person is good too. For example, if you work in soup kitchen you could tell an anonymous story about one of the struggles of a person who benefits from this service. Telling a story about something that has happened history can be really helpful if you think that point foreshadows something that is occurring or is about to occur. This is the time to let your creativity shine!
  • Ground your opinion in social psychology. Make sure you defend your point with science. Again, this is where writing to your PSYC 100 self will be important. You don’t need to describe and cite studies from the syllabus or lecture. It could be a study that you find on a PsycARTICLES search.
  • If you have questions about the op-ed thesis you are considering, or the article or articles that you want to mention in your op-ed, email me! Include in your email a one or two-sentence thesis, and one or two articles you will use to support. We can give you feedback on your idea based on these two things.
  • Attending class will get us talking about social issues. We will have a scheduled discussion topic on most days of the class.
  • Your application journals will be a nice starting point for your op-ed. Please note that these assignments are still quite different.

Extra credit: Forward me an email showing that you sent your op-ed to an online or print publication, seeking to have it published! Actual publication is cause for celebration! You will get an extra 10 points for submitting it and an additional 10 if it is published. I know that this is an extremely short turn-around, but that is why it is extra credit. You have to do a little extra to get the credit.

Here are a few places you can submit your op-ed. Please pay careful attention to the word count. Where can I submit my op-ed?
