Assignment 1: Essay
Due Week 4 and worth 100 points

Choose one (1) of the three (3) reading selections from the list of topic choices below. The focus is on brief but important primary source material written by major authors. Read the selections as identified with each topic below. Write a three to four (3-4) paragraph essay (250 words minimum) which analyzes the “surprise ending” of the reading selection.

Topic Choices

• Reading selection from Descartes’ Discourse on the Method (Part IV). Descartes begins with a proof of one basic conclusion and ends with a proof of something much grander. Remember to focus on the surprise and point of realization, not the details of the philosophical argument. Read Part IV of the Discourse on the Method located at http://www.earlymoderntexts.com/assets/pdfs/descar… (then scroll down to Part 4, pp. 14-18). This is only four or five (4 or 5) pages of the larger work.
• Reading selection of Swift’s A Modest Proposal. It is essential to recognize the genre of this work, as discussed in our class text, which you should consult and cite. Swift promotes a radical solution, but subtle options are mentioned. You are looking for surprise and a point of realization. Read and focus on A Modest Proposal located at http://www.victorianweb.org/previctorian/swift/mod….
• Two (2) reading selections from Voltaire’s Candide. Consider how these readings start and end in terms of the action and the beliefs. You are looking for surprise and a point of realization. These selections can be found on pp. 840-841 in the textbook. In addition, consult the class text at pp. 824-825.

For the reading selection you choose:

1. Clearly state in your own words the “surprise ending” in the reading you selected. Clearly identify the point in the reading when you realized that there were elements in the reading that surprised you. Not all of the surprises come at the end.
2. Evaluate how successful the author was in convincing you to accept the validity of the “surprise ending” that was different from what you expected.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

• Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA Style format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions. (Note: Students can find APA style materials located in the Additional Resources section of their Student Center within their course shell for reference)
• Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.
• Use the source(s) identified above for the topic you choose, focusing on the main primary source of that author. You may use additional sources also if they are of good academic quality for college papers (Wikipedia and similar websites do not qualify). Use proper APA style in-text citing and also a matching APA style References list at the end.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

• Explain how key social, cultural, and artistic contributions contribute to historical changes.
• Explain the importance of situating a society’s cultural and artistic expressions within a historical context.
• Examine the influences of intellectual, religious, political, and socio-economic forces on social, cultural, and artistic expressions.
• Identify major historical developments in world cultures from the Renaissance to the contemporary period.
• Use technology and information resources to research issues in the study of world cultures.
• Write clearly and concisely about world cultures using proper writing mechanics.

Grading for this assignment will be based on answer quality, logic/organization of the paper, and language and writing skills, using the following rubric found here.

The Constitution divides the war power between the President and Congress. It makes the President the commander-in-chief and gives Congress the ability to declare war. However, especially since World War II, President have claimed the right to initiate military action without getting the consent of Congress. In addition, while the Constitution requires the Senate to approve any treaty with another country, Presidents have began using executive agreements to bypass the need for senate approval on treaties. For this response paper, explain how you think power in the realm of war and diplomacy should be divided between the President and Congress. Do you approve of the consolidation of power within the Presidency, or do you think that Congress should play a larger role in devising America’s foreign policy? What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving most control of America’s foreign policy to the President?

Option 1/SolutionWrite a 10-15page paperidentifying aPROBLEM within the American prison systemand proposing a workable solution to that problem. Your solution should be detailed and well-researched. You should consider any solutions to this problem that have already been proposed, and either refute those proposals (explain why theywouldn’t work or are not practical) or incorporate them into your own solution.Remember, this is an argument: you are arguing (1) that this problem exists, (2) that a solution to this problem is necessary, and (3) that your proposal would be an effectivesolution to the problem.You may use work from your previous two papersin this classas part of thisfinal paper.For example, your problem paper could become the first part of your problem/solution paper. However, all previously written work MUST be thoroughly edited, revised, and integratedinto your final paper. You may NOT use any previous work from outside of thiscourse.

Research and Sources Both of these paper topics require research, but the amount and type of research that is necessary will depend on each individual topic. It is up to you to determine how much research is appropriate for your final paper.Rather than trying to hit an arbitrary number of source citations, you should do as much research as is necessary to thoroughly support your argument with credible, relevant information. If you’re having trouble determining whether you’re using enough research, come see me for help! Of course, all sources must be properly cited in MLA format (in-text citations AND Works Cited page).

This is a reader response exercise. It is clear that Catcher or O’Connor’s short stories have evoked some emotion or thought in many of you, whether revulsion, confusion, praise, condemnation, tolerance, inspiration, boredom, and so on. Whatever that thought process or emotion is, please hold on to it. Now, think about three concrete reasons or literary devices used within just one of the stories that you have read this semester that have helped evoke this reaction from you. Reasons and literary devices will vary. Here are just a few: characterization, setting, plot pattern, tone, narrative style, diction, descriptions, symbolism, use of hyperbole, use of foreshadowing, cultural sentiments, political message(s), use of religion, resolution, theme, profanity, racial discord, originality or lack thereof, rebellion against power structures, ambiguity…etc. Once you have selected the story and the three reasons/devices, write a simple essay (five paragraphs are sufficient) examining how those three elements have aroused the respective thought or emotion in you. Please note that your essay must include evidence from the story in each supporting paragraph, and it must not exceed four pages, counting the Work Cited page.

Helping Note: Thesis is the emotion/thought that is incited, and plan of development points are the three reasons/literary devices that have stirred this reaction. You may write this essay in the first person, if you prefer.
