Plate Tectonics as an Example of the Scientific Method

introduction (25 – 50% of a typed, double-spaced page): Set up the topic. Speak in general terms about paradigm shifts in science. Introduce the question that prompted Wegener’s research. THESIS QUESTION: Is the development of the plate tectonics theory a good example of the scientific method? Your answer to this question will be your thesis statement.

BP #1 (50 – 75%): Describe the scientific paradigm that prevailed before Wegner. Include the problems that came with the old paradigm

BP #2 (50 – 75%): Discuss Wegener’s initial hypothesis of continental drift. How did he arrive at his hypothesis? What questions and ideas did he have?

BP #3 (50 – 75%): Discuss problems that came with Wegener’s hypothesis. How did external research by others (Holmes, for example) rehabilitate Wegener’s hypothesis

BP #4 (50 – 75%): Describe how the hypothesis became the plate tectonic theory.

Conclusion (15 – 25%): Close discussion by telling your reader what the implications of this theory. Suggest why following the scientific method was essential to the process.

Discuss what you feel are the potential benefits of stem cell research for Alzheimer’s patients and their families.

Stem cells are undifferentiated, primitive cells with the ability both to multiply and to differentiate into specific kinds of cells. Stem cells hold the promise of allowing researchers to grow specialized cells or tissue, which could be used to treat injuries or disease (e.g., spinal cord injuries, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, strokes, burns).” (Slevin, 2010)

Choose ONE of the following issues and post to its thread with supporting evidence. Respond to two peers who wrote about issues other than the one you chose.

  1. Discuss what you feel are the potential benefits of stem cell research for Alzheimer’s patients and their families.
  2. Share your perspective on the stem cell debate regarding donation of surplus embryos to couples for “embryo adoption.”
  3. Why is the task of disposing unused frozen human embryos different from disposing of other medical tissue?
  4. Discuss why you think embryonic stem cell research “crosses a moral boundary.”

Essay 4. How to Use Critical Analysis in the Study of the Four Gospels. In no more than 2,000 words, discuss how one may use textual analysis as a toolin Bible study without undermining faith in the Scriptures. First, consider that modern research techniques often limit themselves to what can be duplicated and reproduced, but the Gospels discuss incarnation, miracles, and a physical resurrection that cannot be reproduced for the modern researcher to analyze. Then consider that the Four Gospels tell substantially the same story, but they differ. How do you account for those differences? How do you account for the duplications? How can the four Gospels be true if they differ?  What guiding principles should one employ when approaching the Gospels? How should the miracles reported there be understood? Were they real events or merely stories told to illustrate a spiritual truth? How can modern analytical thought contribute to discovering the truth of the Gospels?

As a psychiatric nurse practitioner, before you can recommend potential pharmacotherapeutics to address a patient’s condition or disorder, you must understand the basic function and structure of the neuron and central nervous system. For this Assignment, you will review and apply your understanding of neuroanatomy by addressing a set of short answer prompts.

To Prepare:
Review the Learning Resources for this week in preparation to complete this Assignment.
Reflect on the basic function and structure of the neuron in relation to the central nervous system.
Reflect on the inter-connectedness between neurons and the central nervous system, including the pathway and distribution of electrical impulses.
Reflect on how neurons communicate with each other and review the concept of neuroplasticity.

Address the following Short Answer prompts for your Assignment. Be sure to include references to the Learning Resources for this week.

In 4 or 5 sentences, describe the anatomy of the basic unit of the nervous system, the neuron. Include each part of the neuron and a general overview of electrical impulse conduction, the pathway it travels, and the net result at the termination of the impulse. Be specific and provide examples.
Answer the following (listing is acceptable for these questions):
What are the major components that make up the subcortical structures?
Which component plays a role in learning, memory, and addiction?
What are the two key neurotransmitters located in the nigra striatal region of the brain that play a major role in motor control?
In 3 or 4 sentences, explain how glia cells function in the central nervous system. Be specific and provide examples.
The synapse is an area between two neurons that allows for chemical communication. In 3 or 4 sentences, explain what part of the neurons are communicating with each other and in which direction does this communication occur? Be specific.
In 3–5 sentences, explain the concept of “neuroplasticity.” Be specific and provide examples.

Discuss potential complications in a clinical scenario at an out-patient family practice.

Purpose
Discuss potential complications in a clinical scenario at an out-patient family practice. Students will explore potential effects on patient outcomes and implications for members of the heath care team as a result of conflict among the healthcare team. Students will develop strategies that result in prevention of untoward outcomes that result in a positive practice culture.

Requirements:
You are a family nurse practitioner working in an outpatient primary care office of a large hospital system. The practice has been operating for over 15 years, and many of the administrative and clinical staff were hired when the practice opened. You have been in the practice for less than 3 months. In that short amount of time, you have witnessed several of the clinical staff engaging in heated arguments with each other, sometimes in patient areas. You overhear an argument occurring today between two staff. You pick up a patient’s chart and notice a very low blood pressure that the medical assistant failed to notify you about. When you confront the MA, she states that she was going to report the vital signs to you when she became engaged in the heated argument you overheard and forgot to notify you.

Unfortunately, this pattern of behavior is not unusual in this practice. Working with staff who cannot cooperate effectively can negatively influence your ability to spend time with patients, can impede the flow of patients through the office, and could impact patient safety.

Case Study Responses:
Analyze the case study for potential issues for members of the healthcare team from office conflict. Contrast the potential effects for each member of the healthcare team based upon the required readings from the week. Discuss the potential ethical and legal implications for each of the following practice members:
Medical assistant
Nurse Practitioner
Medical Director
Practice
What strategies would you implement to prevent further episodes of potentially dangerous patient outcomes?
What leadership qualities would you apply to effect positive change in the practice? Focus on the culture of the practice.
A scholarly resource must be used for EACH discussion question each week.

Portrait of a Criminal Presentation

At the end of this appendix is a list of infamous criminals that can be used for this presentation. On the designated day in class, you are to pick one you would like to research and learn more about. You are going to create a Powerpoint presentation, that should last no more than 5 to 6 minutes, in order to share the portrait of this criminal with your classmates.

The areas to include in your presentation are as follows:

  • Introduction: Introduce your criminal. What is his/her name? What crimes did he/she commit? What was he/she convicted for?
  • Risk Factors: Based on your review of the research, identify at least three risk factors the individual showed early in life that may have predisposed him/her to criminal behavior. Remember these can be developmental, biological or learning and situation factors that may have contributed to the individual becoming a criminal. You should identify risk factors from at least two of these areas.
  • Classification of Criminal: Identify what type of criminal he/she would be considered based on the various categories we have studied throughout the semester. Provide evidence of at least two reasons why the person would be classified in the category you have placed them.
  • Theory: Choose a theory that can possibly explain why this individual became a criminal. This can include a discussion of what their motivation may have been for the crimes and/or how a theory of aggression might apply to the individual.
  • Conclusion: Conclude your presentation with a brief discussion of where he/she is now. Is the person still incarcerated? If so, where? Is he/she filing appeals to overturn court decisions? Is he/she up for parole soon? If the person is deceased how and when did that happen?

In order to complete this presentation, you are to use academic resources to find your information. This can include books, journal articles, court records or government websites. It should NOT include websites such as Wikipedia or any other websites where the information cannot be verified as accurate. If you are in doubt of the quality of a reference and if you should use it or not please as your professor.

You should create a Powerpoint presentation to present the information in the six bullet point above. Keep in mind a typical slide takes at least a minute to present so your overall presentation my only be 5-6 content slides. You should have a title slide as well as a slide with your references placed in proper APA format. You will need to turn in a hard copy of your presentation (notes version) to your professor the day of the presentation.

Please refer to the rubric regarding the weights of each portion of the assignment and how you will be graded overall on the project.
