Discussion Boards are a major part of the course as well as a big part of your overall grade in the course. Interaction is the key to learning! For this course, interaction is based on discussion board posts.

  • Each student must post their own response to the discussion board question (called an original thread) along with posting a response to at least two other student postings (called a peer response).
  • When you respond to a peer posting, you don’t always have to agree with them. Use your critical thinking skills and analyze their response, give more details or challenge their assumptions. Being a good student means using critical thinking!
  • You will want to create discussion board assignments that are meaningful and interesting to you personally and to your colleagues in the class.

Textbook References: Clear references to the textbook are required in both the original thread post and both peer responses for all course DBs.

  • Textbook references should come from the chapter(s) specified in the assignment prompt and be clearly connected to your post and the assignment topic.
  • Be sure and include the chapter and page number from the textbook in your posts, for example (chapter 2, 59), just as you would do for any research paper/post!

DBs: You can earn a total of 15 points per discussion board: 10 points maximum for your original thread posting and 5 points maximum for your response to 2 or more other student’s postings:

  • Original posts should be at least 500-600 words total and have a least 1 textbook reference from each specified chapter. You will have 2 references per original DB post.
  • Each of the two peer responses should be at least 150 words each in length and have a least 1 textbook reference from the specified chapter. You will have a textbook reference in each of your peer response posts.

Chapter 4: Go on a technology fast for three days with two people in your life. No email, Facebook, Twitter, or texting. You may call or visit each other in person. If possible, do not tell the person your intentions. Simply change your mode of communication with them. Answer these questions:

  1. In what ways has social media influenced your perception of your relationships?
  2. How did your perception of your communication change when you altered your usual mode of electronically mediated communication?
  3. What was the other person’s reaction to the change in communication? Positive? Negative? Explain.
  4. Did you feel more satisfied or dissatisfied with the relationship, based on the increased face-to-face or phone interaction? Why or why not?
  5. Do you believe you will permanently make any changes to the way you communicate with this person? Why or why not?

For this Final Project, you will be given the opportunity to pull together everything you have learned these past five weeks into a cohesive classroom plan for a three- to five- year-old preschool program. The following is the make-up of your classroom.
 

You have 12 students total: Eight students are typically developing.  One student has an Autism Spectrum Disorder.  One student exhibits the following behaviors but has      not been diagnosed with any particular learning need or disability.  Limited language  Jumps from activity to activity  Engages only in parallel play  One student who has a Sensory Processing Disorder (e.g.      she is sensitive to light, sound, smells, and textures such as paint,      sand, glue, and clothing and she avoids physical proximity to people).  One student who is both cognitively and linguistically      advanced. 

For this classroom plan, you must show your administration or director that you have the necessary strategies in place to effectively instruct each of your 12 students based on their individual needs. You will present this in the form of a PowerPoint presentation. You are encouraged to creatively address the material by including graphics, charts, and/or graphs. This presentation must be formatted according to APA style, including the title and reference slides and citing within slides when applicable. The notes section of the PowerPoint should be utilized in order to effectively elaborate on each necessary component. Lastly, you must use at least five scholarly resources (e.g. peer-reviewed journal article, book, website for a special education organization, etc.) as well as the course text. Remember to cite your sources throughout the presentation in order to support your ideas.

Seriously, watch it! This is the assignment we would have done in class, too. I would have told you that we have a mystery guest coming, and then I would have popped in this DVD. “The Grinch” is a great example of how someone’s personality can go through a major transformation. Feel free to watch the longer version of the live action movie, too, if you want. That one goes into his childhood and past a lot more.

Step 2. Pick 2 theorists.

Choose from the following: Freud, Jung, Adler, Horney, Erikson, Maslow or Rogers. Open your notes to the sections on the 2 theorists you chose. Keep them nearby for easy reference while you watch the movie.

Be sure to take lots of notes about his life, his current situation, his past (to the extent you can glean this information from the video) and his transformation.

Step 3. Write your profiles. You will have 1 separate page for each theorist. A total of 2 pages with 2 paragraphs on each page will be submitted. This should all be in one document.

Each of your 2 pages should include:

  • 1 paragraph that summarizes 3 concepts of one of the theorists you chose. Be sure to clearly explain why you selected these concepts and why they are appropriate for explaining some aspect of this person’s personality. Identify the concepts by making them bold.
  • 1 paragraph that summarizes possible explanations for this person’s transformation from the point of view of each of your chosen theorist. Be sure to use the terminology of the theorist. Again, highlight the terminology by making it bold.

I’m asking you to highlight the terminology and concept names in bold because I want both of us (you and I) to easily see if you are able to come up with and write about some of the many concepts we have talked about in the class.
