  • Your essay must include your argument about growth mindset. You can argue that growth mindset is the most important factor in improving student success (taking Dweck’s side) or you can argue that there are other factors that are more important than growth mindset (taking from either Hilton or Kohn). That means you need a thesis that states your answer to the above question and topic sentences that give reasons for your answer. This project gives you an opportunity to not only learn more about a developing country, but also get directly involved at the grassroots level in that country.

1.Construct an economic profile of your country using data from the CIA World Factbook. You will collect data, construct a visually appealing table and analyze two variables from the data you have collected.

2. Conduct a needs assessment for your country using data from UN Human Development Report. You will present the data you’ve collected and identify a key development issue for your country. You will then come up with a policy targeting that issue.

3. Using the site kiva.org (Links to an external site.), find a loan being fundraised by someone in your country. If you cannot find a loan in your country, find one in a country that is nearby or shares a lot of the same cultural and economic characteristics. For this assignment, you will be analyzing the microfinance institution that is administering the loan (Kiva refers to them as “field partners.”) Your analysis will consider things like the organizations mission, experience, changes in status, financial health, risk rating, accountability, borrowing costs, and profit motivation.

4. In this report, you will discuss why you chose this particular loan. You can even fund their loan (minimum of $25), though I do not require you to do so given the financial hardships many are facing. Explain the factors that influenced your choice of borrower such as geography, gender, sector, group/individual lending, etc. Be sure to justify your choice by referencing the topics we have discussed in class. Then discuss how your loan will contribute to development in the borrower’s country. Be specific about the particular issue that your loan addresses and why the loan you are making will promote development.

Grief Reactions

Jordan, Zach, and Helena are now in their 50s and have one remaining living parent, Dean. Their mother, Leigh, passed away 10 months ago unexpectedly from a stroke. Their dad was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer that metastasized to the liver just three months ago, and Dean is on a rapid decline.

The siblings are all in different stages of grief and all have different relationships with their father. Helena (the youngest) never forgave Dean for his midlife behavior, although Dean and Leigh did not divorce and seemed to form a stronger relationship after Dean’s midlife issues were resolved with time and counseling. Zach was the middle child and always felt like the middle child; he was very close with his mother and is still deep in grief over losing her so recently and so suddenly. Jordan was extremely close with his father and considered him his best friend. Dean is very anxious and afraid of dying; however, he does claim that he is eager to reunite with the love of his life—Leigh.

Based on the case study provided in the Discussion Forums in this course and this week’s required readings, what type of grief reactions are Jordan, Zach, and Helena experiencing? Explain the reaction types you selected to characterize each. Which sibling do you feel is going to have the hardest time recovering emotionally from these losses and why?
