Discussion Labor Systems in the Americas

In his important study on slavery, Many Thousands Gone, Historian Ira Berlin discusses the difference between “slave societies” and “societies with slaves.” According to Berlin, “What distinguished societies with slaves was the fact that slaves were marginal to the central productive processes; slavery was just one form of labor among many.” In contrast, Berlin notes, “In slave societies…slavery stood at the center of economic production, and the master-slave relationship provided the model for all social relations: husband and wife, parent and child, employer and employee…”

Conflict Management Report

Conflict Management Report

The workplace can be an especially stressful environment. Personal conflicts between coworkers, fear of layoffs, and heavy workloads can be causes of negative stress. This stress can be carried to our homes and after-work activities, impacting personal health. Allowing these stressors to build and intensify will only further impair the work environment. For this assignment, you are required to review a scenario regarding a woman (Kate) who has experienced negative stress stemming from her work environment. Then, you will compare your own conflict management skills and experiences against Kate’s experiences. Follow the directions below to write an 8–10-page report on conflict management.

Review the following scenario:

Kate has been employed by a well-known manufacturing company for 12 years. She is the only female on her line and the fastest worker. She has been promoted several times through mergers and acquisitions, but has always been looked over for a senior management position. Kate believes she is qualified for advancement but thinks her manager has a problem with her personally. To top it off, Kate did not receive a semiannual or annual review, which would have resulted in a raise. Her coworkers (all males) have urged her to go to management and report what she believes to be discriminatory behavior from her immediate manager.

Now, complete the following tasks:

  1. Discuss a situation you have been in where you felt you were passed over for a promotion, made to feel indifferent, or were discriminated against. Compare and contrast your story with Kate’s.
  2. Compare the possible ethical breaches of Kate’s manager against your own manager’s behavior. Utilize scholarly research on leadership theory as justification.
  3. Compare the possible legal breaches of Kate’s manager against your own manager’s behavior. Utilize scholarly research on leadership theory as justification.
  4. Recommend an approach Kate could have used to manage the negative risk both personally and professionally.
  5. Evaluate the advice Kate received from her coworkers.
  6. Referring to the conflict resolution strategies taught in this course, determine which one is best suited to resolve Kate’s conflict. Justify your position.
  7. In the chart below, evaluate your conflict resolution skills from the past five years. Rate yourself on a scale from 1–5, where 1 represents low performing and 5 represents high performing.

Conflict Resolution Approach

Rate Yourself (1–5)

  • Preventing the conflict
  • Suppressing the conflict
  • Avoiding the conflict
  • Using false emotions for distracting the conflict
  • Eliminating the conflict
  • Accepting the conflict
  • Recognizing the value of the conflict
  • Encouraging interpersonal criticism
  • Managing the conflict

Select one conflict resolution approach in which you ranked the lowest and develop an individual improvement plan for that approach.Explain how the mediation process could strengthen your conflict resolution and management skills.Discuss how the arbitration process could strengthen your conflict resolution and management skills.Implement some portion of your plan. Provide a detailed summary of the changes that occurred in your development as it relates to your ability to handle conflict.

Write an 8–10-page report in Word format. Utilize at least four scholarly sources (in addition to your textbook) to complete your research, referencing them within the text and at the end in a reference list. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M5_A2.doc.

Make sure you write in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship through accurate representation and attribution of sources; and display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Discussion Help Needed

Discussion Responses Needed on the following topic:

The Office of University Programs within DHS sponsors security research efforts by coalitions of US universities in Academic Centers of Excellence (COE). One such center is the Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events (CREATE) headed by the University of Southern California. One CREATE study addressed the question “Should We Protect Commercial Airliners Against Surface-to-Air Missile Attacks by Terrorists?” What did the study conclude? Do you agree? Why or why not?

Instructions:

Please provide a follow up response to the following 3 responses. The responses are to the topic mentioned above.

Requirements:

Min 1 paragraph length for each response

Min 1 source cited per response

Response 1

When the Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events headed the following study, and addressed the question “Should we protect commercial airliners against surface-to-air missile attacks by terrorists” they determined the cost effectiveness of Man-Portable Air Defense Systems. CREATE was used to determine this analysis because they were separate from the office of the MANPADS, and could make an unbiased decision on whether or not to promote these specific countermeasures. The study further went on to determine the countermeasures of the devices and how a terrorist attempt outcome would be, the successes of it, and the consequences it would have on the economy (Winterfeldt & O’Sullivan, 2006, p. 63). With the analysis showing that the economic impact of the defense systems could be huge, which on the other hand the countermeasures are shown to be inexpensive having less impact on the economy. The question is in relation with the United States needing a better means for attack when it comes to missiles. While determining the effectiveness MANPADS the study should of took the economic damage after 9/11 into consideration more than the health of the airline industry. There are other cost effective countermeasures that could be used to defeat air missile attacks. Also, additional research could be done to determine better estimates on economic loss and countermeasure. I bring the estimates up because there is a huge gap in the research and it ranges from $40 billion to $400 billion in the analysis (Winterfeldt & O’Sullivan, 2006, p. 74). Another argument is the analysis never came to an agreement if the anti and pro MANPADS countermeasure are the right means of attack. If there were cost associated with a decision on which countermeasure was better this could definitely steer one’s thoughts in different direction. I think additional information on the cost and countermeasures that directly affect the ebony would be beneficial for a better analysis of this particular study.

Response 2

This was an interesting read. A successful attack is estimated to cost the American consumer between $40 – $400 billion. That is quite the impact from the loss of a single jet. However, these jets are not military aircraft with a sole or pair of operators. These are commercial jets, reliant upon a community to support their existence, to spread commerce globally. They operate under a Capitalistic economic model and often carry hundreds of passengers. The impact of an attack could diminish citizens use of aircraft, cause airlines to fail economically, and even increase fear; all of who’s impact could spread across the country causing a financially catastrophic loss.

CREATE studied the feasibility to install man-portable air-defense systems (MANPADS) on commercial airliners in an effort to mitigate a successful attack. CREATE determined that MANPADS could be cost effective provided three conditions were met:

The probability of attack was above 40% over a ten year span.

Countermeasures cost is under $15 billion

Economic value is over $75 billion

I do not agree with the study. While 17 factors were identified, only three mattered to the study. An assumption was made as to the effectiveness of MANPADS in relation to the missiles being utilized. If older, less technologically advanced missile systems are used (this type would increase the probability of an attack but the weapon has a lower success rate), MANPADS could be effective. However, new missile technology is advancing at a rapid rate. MANPADS technology must continue to increase at the rate of missile technology in order to remain effective. With continuing variations in attack methodology, terrorist would certainly modify their attack procedures. Secondly, a great deal of passenger aircraft fly at altitudes over 20,000 feet. The typical range of a shoulder fired SAM is approximately 6 miles. Aircraft cruising at typical altitude as considered relatively safe. There was no mention in the report of probabilities entering and exiting target range when probability for attack by SAM would be greater.

Response 3 Can Disaster Preparation Be Characterized as “Crying Wolf?”

Another CREATE study examined How Near-Miss Events Amplify or Attenuate Risky Decision Making. This postulates, among other things, that decision makers with access to information about disaster “near misses” will be less likely to take mitigation measures because the history is of near misses not actual events. For example, New York City took certain measures for Hurricane Irene events in 2011, many of which did not come to pass. This created a false sense of security and when Hurricane Sandy struck a year later many were caught unprepared based on the previous year’s experience. What do you think? Valid? Or was this study a waste of taxpayer dollars?

Cinema Discussion (VERY EASY)

Please answer the following questions and respond to at least one classmate for 2 points.

HISTORICAL/CULTURAL CONTEXT

I’d like you to think about the time period this film’s story 1880s.

“Stagecoach was produced in 1939 during the Great Depression. Europe was at war, although Americans would not be drawn into this world conflict until 1941. The film’s cast of characters would have resonated with audiences of the times, who recognized Gatewood as representative of the corrupt bankers who had caused America’s economic collapse. “What’s good for the banks is good for America,” he pontificates during the journey. More importantly, the class warfare played out within the rocking coach reinforced social prejudices of the times. The film argues for the dignity of all people, regardless of class. The divisiveness inside the coach, contrasted with the rugged landscape outside, will destroy all unless they can find a way to rise above their intolerance and work together. No doubt many who viewed Stagecoach were immigrants who were themselves struggling for acceptance in America. The film changed the Western genre significantly, from B-grade to A-class feature status. In 1995, the National Film Preservation Board named Stagecoach to the National Film Registry as a film of historical, cultural and aesthetic significance.” The American West and the Western Film Genre. © The Film Foundation. QUESTIONS

1. How did you feel about this film? Did you like it or not? Why?

2. The Western genre rose to great popularity and we still see it’s success in films like Django Unchanged and many others. As we watch Stagecoach in 2016, about 1880s, made in 1939, what themes still resonate? Please be specific about scenes and correlations to modern events.

The Disneyfication of Gender/ own words paper

You may not realize it, but “Disneyfication” is a word. It refers to the transformation of cultural phenomena to resemble the images promoted by Disney films and theme parks. As the materials for this week have shown, these images can frame our understanding of gender and gender roles. So given this, a careful examination of the images that Disney offers to American society (and increasingly the global community) can help us better understand an important cultural influence on how gender proceeds in our imagination and in our interactions. Your assignment is analyze an animated Disney (or Pixar, etc.) character for the gendered messages that are being conveyed.

The Assignment. Select an animated character from a Disney film (or a similar film studio) – this can be a hero, a villain, or a secondary (but still important) character – and provide a detailed discussion about how the character presents a gender strategy and what might be the message that children take from that presentation.

1.Detailing the Character’s Gender Strategy. The first part of your analysis should focus on how the character presents their gender – what kind of strengths and capacities does the character present? what kinds of weaknesses? how do they interact with people of the same gender and with people of a different gender? how does their body convey a sense of gender beyond the biological?

2.Setting the Character into the Narrative. It matters whether our character is framed as a hero or villain or comedic side-character, wise sage, etc. The characteristics of a hero are praiseworthy, of a villain are scornful, and of other characters falling somewhere between. Identifying the gender message from the film requires understanding if the narrative sets the character up as a model to be emulated or reviled.

3.Gendered Message. And the final element of your paper should articulate precisely what you think the gender message is: what lesson about gender might a child take away from this film? how does this message frame out the importance or irrelevance of hypermasculinity and hyperfemininity? does the character reinforce the feminine apologetic or challenge it? For this section, look back into the readings for this week, and use some of the concepts that Wade and Ferree offer to help with your analysis of the gendered messages conveyed by your character.

4.In the end, I’d like to read a 1200-word (at least) discussion detailing of the gender messages presented by an animated character.1200 words minimum; please include the no at the end of your essay/single-spaced block format (no paragraph indents but with a line of empty text between paragraphs)
