Hope through distraction

Purpose: To write a three-to-five-page rhetorical analysis; to develop the analysis using the pattern for this genre; and to follow the rules of academic rhetoric and Standard American English.

General Instructions:

Format: MLA format. Use the same formatting that you did in the first paper. Heading at the top left-hand side of page 1, 1 inch margins all around, double-spacing between lines, and indentation at the beginning of new paragraphs. All papers must conform to MLA guidelines, including headers and page numbers.

Length: At least three full typed pages, double spaced, with one-inch margins. Papers under the minimum length will receive an automatic maximum grade of 50.

Create an interesting title.

Provide a thorough rhetorical analysis of a short story.

You will need to identify the title of the short story in your paper. Please use the correct punctuation practices for titles of short stories.

Since this is a formal analysis, you may not use first person point of view. Use third person pronouns (he, she, they, it) or indefinite pronouns (one, everyone, someone).

In formal writing of such papers, use simple, present tense verbs. This practice is known as being in the “literary present”.

Specific Instructions:

Thoroughly read Chapters 8, 9,21, 22, 25, 26, and 27in the Writing Today textbook before you attempt this assignment.

You will need to incorporate quotations and paraphrasing from the short story that you choose to make your points.

Follow one of the organization strategies (found on page 137) for your rhetorical analysis.

Remember, you are not summarizing the short story for your audience. Instead, you are analyzing how the short story is constructed andtherhetorical elements that the short story makes and how the short story is for audience. You will need to pay special attention to how the writer uses appeals to logic, emotional appeals, and appeals to authority and credibility, background information about the historical context of the short story, the short story, and the audience the short story is written for.

You should not have any outside sources other than the short story that is being analyzed.

Class discussion

My class discussion question needs to be answer with at least 170 words with example. I would like for it to be in your own words. If not please cite in text with reference, No plagiarism please. Doesn’t need a title page.

Class: A common blind spot for people in positions of leadership is the fact that subordinates will not always share negative opinions with them. They may assume that because nobody has complained about something, then everyone must like it, or at least be ok with it. The reality may be that most people have a problem with the way you’re dealing with them, but nobody is willing to confront you about it. How can you uncover those negative reactions that your employees or subordinates might be hiding from you? Did you ever have a boss that was unaware that something they did was abrasive or off-putting because nobody ever told them it was?

case study, answer ques about perfectionism 2.5 pages double space

Case Study #4

“Monica the Perfectionist”

Monica is a 38-year-old, stay-at-home mother of four children, but is starting to become a bit bored with staying home, having done it for the past 15 years. Prior to having children, she worked in a credit union and enjoyed that job. She especially liked the precision of the number crunching. This is a characteristic that she has carried into her housekeeping chores. She tries to keep her home spotless, even with four children. She cleans the bathrooms every day, vacuums, dusts, picks up toys, and so on. Clutter and messiness bother her, and she is almost neurotic about cleaning. She is a perfectionist and knows it. All her friends agree, but she is able to laugh at this quirk and not take herself too seriously.

Although maintaining a house with four children might seem overwhelming to others, Monica handles these chores fine and has time to keep in close touch with many friends, especially on Facebook. She is continuously on her phone. Her friends are a very important part of her social support network, especially since she does not have coworkers with whom to interact and because her husband travels a lot for his job. Often, her friends seem more important to her than her spouse, and she seems to have a better relationship with them than with her husband. They describe her as being fiercely loyal, supportive, and talkative. They also know she has a good heart: She is always willing to help out another mom whose babysitter got sick by watching their child while she goes to work. If a friend is feeling overwhelmed about preparing for an upcoming party, Monica is willing to cook or bake something for her.

A person would never know from looking at her that Monica is such a warm and caring person. She actually looks a bit intimidating and angry, but that is just because her age is starting to show, with deepening lines between her eyes being mistaken for frowning. She is aware of this contradiction and is a bit self-conscious of her frown lines.

She is also insecure about not having attended college. Many of her friends graduated from college and some even have master’s degrees, but Monica never did. She does not think of herself as unintelligent but sees herself as uneducated and defers to others with a better education. Her friends see her as very intelligent and encourage her to take some courses at Bellevue College, mainly so that she would feel better about herself. Monica is considering this possibility. It is something that she has always wanted to do. In particular, she is thinking about getting an associate’s degree in nursing and finishing her bachelor’s degree after her children are in middle school. They will be old enough to not need her as much, but that is still two years away, and she is nervous about this prospect because she has been out of school for so long.

Monica is a good mother. She takes care of her children’s physical and emotional needs; she has one child, Jenna, who has a cognitive learning disability, and Monica is a consistent advocate for her. She makes sure that Jenna’s needs are met, but she is realistic. She knows that Jenna will probably not go as far as her other three children in whatever her chosen career is. Monica is pragmatic even though it is painful for her.

Monica also makes sure that her children have fun. Their family usually purchases a Six Flags Amusement Park season pass, and they frequently go during the summers and even into the fall. At first she went on some of the more exciting roller coasters just because her children wanted to try them out but now she is an avid roller coaster fan and would ride on them even if her children were not with her. This sense of fun can likewise be found in her ability to laugh at herself. She is able to see humor in her need for order and cleanliness, as mentioned earlier, and her occasional feelings of frustration as she takes care of her children.

She sometimes loses her temper, especially when she is tired, but she is always aware of her fatigue being a factor in how she reacts to her children, and she can later joke about this with friends who also have children, and sometimes even with her own kids.

Using Chapter 7 as your guideline, address the following issues or questions as they relate to Allport’s Personological Trait Theory Perspective:

  • Allport suggested seven criteria that demonstrate that a person is psychologically healthy (mature). Which are applicable to Monica?
  • What is proprium, according to Allport? What is Monica’s proprium?
  • What is propriate striving? What behavior by Monica demonstrates it?

essay about the story of stone

(need to read the book(the story of stone) before starting the essay, the whole essay is depends on the readings.)

Please format your essays in US Letter (not A3) size at 12 points in the Times New Roman font, doublespaced.

Examine one or more of the literary texts we have read ( in this essay, the The tale of Genji), just about any comparative, analytical or critical approach is fine; it is up to you. One effective method is to choose one theme or issue and use it as a point of comparison between texts, or between different chapters or sections of a longer text. In any case, your paper needs to be built around an argument that is worth making. This argument should not be so obvious that there is no need to go about supporting it. (I.e., if your argument can be paraphrased by saying “these two texts are the same, except for where they are different,” or “Genji appears to be attracted to women said to resemble his mother,” you need a new argument.) I encourage students to come up with their own topics, but if you decide that you would rather be assigned a topic, please let me know. Even if I assign you a topic, it is up to you to come up with the central argument.

No additional reading or research is necessary, but it is not forbidden, either.

Avoid saying something is “interesting”; it does not constitute a sufficiently weighty argument, and it is in fact very boring to write in a paper that something is “interesting.”

Consult the citation guidelines, etc., given in the MLA Handbook. (If you wish, you may use another style manual such as The Chicago Manual of Style).

Please also at least consider the style guidelines in Elements of Style.

Les bêtes noires de David Gundry:

Bad: “Ōshima’s opinion with regards to U.S. military bases in Japan…”

Good: “Ōshima’s opinion with regard to U.S. military bases in Japan…” Even better (because more concise): “Ōshima’s opinion regarding U.S. military bases in Japan…”

Bad: “This argument is obviously based off of Bakhtin’s writings on dialogism in fiction.”

Good: “This argument is obviously based on Bakhtin’s writings on dialogism in fiction.”

Please note that when writing about films or works of literature the convention is to use, in most cases, the “historical present” to describe their content and to use some 5 form of past tense when describing the historical framework in which they were produced or are set.

For example: “Among the Heian-period aristocracy, skill at calligraphy and poetry composition were important for maintaining and improving one’s social standing. Characters in The Tale of Genji frequently evaluate others on the basis of their handwriting and poetry.”

Generally I recommend the following structure, with which most of you are probably already familiar: Introduction, which should include a thesis statement (i.e., a succinct statement of your main argument, preferably in your first paragraph). Evidence for your thesis (the bulk of the paper). Conclusion (to some extent a restatement of the points introduced in the introduction)
