OVERVIEW

Lesson 6 focuses on moral debates in popular culture using the category of Religion and Popular Culture in Dialogue. Two of that lesson’s objectives where to explain the various ways sexual lyrics function in dancehall, and evaluate the ways reggae artists legitimate homophobia in dancehall. The lesson looked at how popular culture can both reinforce moral norms (such as heteronormativity reiterated in dancehall) and challenge religious traditions for their moral failings (Sinead O’Connor’s criticism of the Catholic Church, or Arrested Development’s criticism of Black churches for failing to nurture African-Americans). It also covered the conflicts over the meaning of yoga by religious and secular practitioners. Each of these is an example of tensions that arise between religion and popular culture. (Remember, using the Religion and Popular Culture in Dialogue category, we are extending our definition of religion to include debates over ethics, as moral principles and social values are traditionally the realm of religion: “these issues are not directly about religion, but they are ethical arenas to which religious values pertain” (Forbes and Mahan. 2017, 20)).

YOUR TASK

For this project you are to analyse Lil Nas X’s “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)” official video. The video is boldly homoerotic and plays with Christian imagery and mythology beginning in the Garden of Eden and ending up in Hell where the singer lap dances on Satan. You are to respond to one of the following prompts, which encourage you to think about this video in the context of RE220OC. Your project should have a clear thesis supported by specific examples, demonstrate close engagement with course concepts and critical thinking, and follow all relevant Writing Tips found on MyLS. You may write an essay but I am open to other projects as well, such as a podcast (no more than 10 minutes long). If you would like to pitch another idea for a project instead of an essay or podcast, please do this at least two weeks in advance of the due date. In addition to the video, your analysis can also look at other songs and videos by Lil Nas X, the artist himself (his Twitter account is a goldmine), and the controversy around his “Satan Shoes”

For this assignment, you can choose to watch one of the following videos upon which to base your assignment:

After watching the selected video, write a reflection paper. In the
consultation on the video, the specific problems of the client family
are addressed. Michael White and the Reflecting Team focus in on the
issues presented. In your reflection paper, please address each of the
following (use the bolded words as headers to organize your paper):

1. In what ways does Michael White move to shift the meanings and beliefs of the clients?
   Cite three or more examples. Be specific and use the actual words and
   dialogue of the client and therapist to illustrate your examples.
2. In what ways does Michael White seek to restructure client interactions or direct the client to change his or her behavior?
   Cite three or more examples. Be specific and use the actual words and
   dialogue of the client and therapist to illustrate your examples. How
   effective were Michael White’s interventions into the meanings and
   directed behavior change? Were you convinced that these methods were
   working?
3. Comment on your impressions of the use of the Reflecting Team.
   What purpose did the Team serve? Was it effective? Cite examples
   supporting you perceptions. How might you use the idea of a reflecting
   team without necessarily having one (they are a bit too expensive for a
   private or agency practice)?
4. Social constructionist therapists work to stabilize, normalize, and create acceptance in clients as methods of solving the concerns of clients. They also focus on strengths and resiliency. Cite at least two or more examples, in detail, where you witnessed this strategy.
5. How could mental health recovery concepts be applied to the case in the video you selected?

OSHA issued the Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals Standard (PSM) (29 CFR 1910.119) which contains requirements for the safe management of chemicals for companies that exceed OSHA’s threshold quantities for highly hazardous substances. This standard requires the establishment of a management program that includes conducting process hazard analyses, establishing detailed operating procedures, and includes other important requirements to mitigate the possibility of a serious, chemical related incident occurring at the facility. For this assignment, suppose you are a safety manager at a chemical manufacturing facility that manufactures concentrated nitric acid. You have heard that employees who load nitric acid into rail tank cars have been checking the preinspection checklist from the rail shipping office instead of actually inspecting the vehicles with the checklist in hand as required by the operating procedure. This has not been the first time the shipping crew has been lax about process safety related work rules. Based on this scenario, please compose a research paper which includes the following information:  Identify the chemical properties, uses, and primary hazards associated with common oxidizers including concentrated nitric acid.  Identify important occupational exposure limits (OELs) associated with at least 3 common oxidizers.  Identify PSM requirements that would be useful for preventing or minimizing the consequences of a significant oxidizer related incident.  Using the OSHA Standard and your own experience, justify and validate the importance of the PSM standard to your facility (if it stores and processes highly hazardous materials) or a facility that may impact your community or a near-by community. Examples might include a water treatment facility that utilizes liquefied chlorine gas, a coal fired power plant that utilizes liquefied chlorine gas for water treatment, a food processing plant with a large ammonia refrigeration system, a fertilizer manufacturing or storage facility, a chemical manufacturing facility, etc.. Your research paper must be at least two pages in length. You are required to cite the OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.119 in your response as well as at least two other sources, one of which must come from the CSU Online Library. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced. Paraphrased and/or quoted materials must have accompanying citations

In Unit 1, you read “The Concerns of the Profession” on pages 66–68 of your Psychological Testing and Assessment text as well as the Code. While the Code addresses the roles of test developers and test users separately, you will be following the standards for test users and, specifically, the section on selecting tests (refer page 5). There are nine elements to consider when selecting a test. You will focus on the first four of these elements for this assignment.

In your paper:

• Identify a test category that is relevant to your academic and professional career goals. The List of Tests by Type document identifies the 10 categories you may choose from. They include (1) intelligence/cognitive abilities, (2) achievement/aptitude, (3) personality, (4) behavior, (5) adaptive behavior, (6) neuropsychological, (7) career/business/organization, (8) autism, (9) depression, and (10) preschool.
• Select three tests from a single category using the List of Tests by Type document. Note: If you have an interest in a particular test that is not on this list, then you may, as an option, submit a request to your instructor to include it in your first assignment with two other tests on the list in the same category. Your instructor will review it and determine if you may proceed with including that test in your assignment or recommend that you select three tests from the list.)
• Compare and contrast these three tests according to the Code’s first four elements.
  • Access the Capella library and conduct a search. Use the Mental Measurements Yearbook (MMY) database from Buros to locate and read a review for each test. Mental Measurements Yearbook is located on the Capella Library’s Database A–Z page.
  • Visit the publishers’ Web site for each test to obtain additional information.
  • Return to the Capella library to choose a database, for example, PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, ERIC (education research). Search for journal articles that are relevant to the four elements and each test. (See the PSY7610 Library Search Guide, linked in the Resources, for search advice. An optional worksheet is also provided to you in the resources to facilitate your research and literature review.)

Organize your paper using the following headings (please use these headings):

1. Title page (required).
2. Abstract (optional).
3. Introduction.
   • Identify your particular area of specialization and career goals, and the three tests you will research and review.
4. Element 1. “Define the purpose for testing, the content and skills to be tested, and the intended test takers” (Code, 2004, p. 5, See #1). Describe your findings for all three tests citing references. Use this section to introduce each test and report on each of the three elements: purpose, content and skills, and intended test takers.
5. Element 2. Describe “the appropriateness of test content, skills tested, and content coverage for the intended purpose of testing” (Code, 2004, p. 5, See #2). Describe your findings for each test citing references. Use this section to report on unique comments or research that evaluate any aspects of the appropriateness of each test. There may be a wide range of facets considering appropriateness that may be unique to each particular test under consideration.
6. Element 3. Describe “materials provided by test developers and select tests for which clear, accurate, and complete information is provided” (Code, 2004, p. 5. See #3). Describe your findings for each test, citing references. Use this section to describe either reviews or your evaluation of the materials described in the sources you locate for each test under consideration.
7. Element 4. “Select tests through a process that includes persons with appropriate knowledge, skills, and training” (Code, 2004, p. 5. See #4). Include specific publisher information about test-user qualification (for example, Level A, B, or C; or other classification). Describe your findings for each test, citing references.
8. Compare and contrast.
   • Compare and contrast the three tests based on these four elements (that is, 1–4).
   • Decide which test will be the focus of your course project, based on your evaluation of the three tests. Explain your choice. All future assignments will be focused only on this one test that you determine here.
9. References (required, use current APA format and style).

You may use the Optional Research Worksheet given in the resources to complete this assignment.

Additional Requirements

Your paper should meet the following requirements:

• References: A minimum of nine references are required for this assignment. These resources may include all of the reference sources identified in your Psychological Testing and Assessment text (pages 29–35), but must include:
  • Three Mental Measurements Yearbook test reviews from Buros (one for each test).
  • Three test publisher Web sites (one for each test).
  • Three journal articles (one for each test).
• Length of paper: A minimum of five pages of content, not including the title page or references (an abstract is not required).
• APA format: Current APA format and style is required throughout. Be sure to use correct format and style for each respective type of reference, for example, Web site versus journal).
