The definition of RHETORIC is: “The art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the exploitation of figures of speech and other compositional techniques. Language designed to have a persuasive or impressive effect, but often regarded as lacking in sincerity or meaningful content.”As we discussed during the “product blog” unit, rhetoric can subtly influence what we see and believe, even when we don’t recognize that we are being manipulated by outside forces.

While you’re watching, take careful notes on how RHETORIC is used to manipulate and coerce the five boys’ fates.For example, note how the newspaper headlines impact the public’s opinion during their 1989 trial.Discuss how racial stereotypes influenced the rhetoric used by reporters, attorneys, and more. Pay attention to how/if the media impacts the public’s perception of the case.

Between 1865 and the present, how did ideas about racial difference and racial hierarchy shape the development of American capitalism? As you craft your argument, consider these guiding questions: What different locations in the economy did people from different racial categories occupy? How possible was it for someone from one racial category to enter an occupation more typically held by members of another category?What kinds of resources, other than jobs, were inaccessible to people who were not white?What role did the government play? For our purposes, Reading Responses are focused responses to the assigned reading. These responses are the most important means for practicing and developing your ability to read and think critically. You will generally write one response each week. These responses should be typed, double-spaced, and at least one page in length. These are like journal entries relating how students respond to their reading.

How did the reading make you think and feel? Of what did the reading remind you? How can you relate the reading to your other classes? Or your current life situations? Or history? Try to make these relatively informal but still academic. Do not give me summaries! Some of the response may quote excerpts of the reading, but keep the quotes short. And make sure to use proper formatting for quotes.

Public speaking is a fear that many people have–even more so than heights, flying, or creepy animals. Therefore, to make matters easier and smoother, it is important to consider audience, purpose, and format when creating a presentation that will accompany one’s verbal communication among a group of colleagues and upper management.

Create a 15- to 20-slide Microsoft^® PowerPoint^® presentation with speaker notes that you would use to train coworkers on effective presentation techniques.

Refer back to Ch. 14 in Excellence in Business Communication for effective presentation techniques.

Include the following:
