Comparing Punishment Theories

The Discussion Board (DB) is part of the core of online learning. Classroom discussion in an online environment requires the active participation of students and the instructor to create robust interaction and dialogue. Every student is expected to create an original response to the open-ended DB question as well as engage in dialogue by responding to posts created by others throughout the week. At the end of each unit, DB participation will be assessed based on both level of engagement and the quality of the contribution to the discussion.
At a minimum, each student will be expected to post an original and thoughtful response to the DB question and contribute to the weekly dialogue by responding to at least two other posts from students. The first contribution must be posted before midnight (Central Time) on Friday of each week. Two additional responses are required after Friday of each week. Students are highly encouraged to engage on the Discussion Board early and often, as that is the primary way the university tracks class attendance and participation.
The purpose of the Discussion Board is to allow students to learn through sharing ideas and experiences as they relate to course content and the DB question. Because it is not possible to engage in two-way dialogue after a conversation has ended, no posts to the DB will be accepted after the end of each unit.
The inmate who enters into a prison environment will undergo the process of prisonization, which is the process of socializing new inmates into the prison subculture. The dilemma with regard to prisonization is that the effect becomes more intense the longer the period of incarceration is. Though the impact of prisonization has been studied by numerous criminologists and penologists, many corrections officials appear to use the results of these studies to control inmates rather than improve therapeutic programs.
Using the course materials, textbook, library, and Web resources, list and discuss 4 ways that prison administrations can positively impact prisonization.
Assignment Guidelines:
•Using the course materials, textbook, library, and Web resources, research prisonization and the effects it has on prisoners depending on the length of incarceration.
•In 4–6 paragraphs, address the following: ◦List and explain 4 methods that you believe can be used to positively impact prisoners and reduce the effects of prisonization.
◦You must use research to support your arguments.
•Be sure to reference all sources using APA style.
•Post a new topic to the Discussion Board that contains your responses pertaining to the above information.
•Comment on at least 2 other students’ posts, and propose any legitimate counterarguments that you see with regard to 2 of their 4 selected prisonization reduction methods. Encourage your classmates to defend their arguments.

Testing for Correlation and Bivariate Regression

To prepare for this Assignment:

  • Review this week’s Learning Resources and media program related to regression and correlation.
  • Using the SPSS software, open the Afrobarometer dataset or the High School Longitudinal Study dataset (whichever you choose) found in the Learning Resources for this week.
  • Based on the dataset you chose, construct a research question that can be answered with a Pearson correlation and bivariate regression.
  • Once you perform your correlation and bivariate regression analysis, review Chapter 11 of the Wagner text to understand how to copy and paste your output into your Word document.

For this Assignment:

Write a 2- to 3-paragraph analysis of your correlation and bivariate regression results for each research question. In your analysis, display the data for the output. Based on your results, provide an explanation of what the implications of social change might be.

Use proper APA format, citations, and referencing for your analysis, research question, and display of output.

Leader in Action

IBM CEO, Ginni Rometty, Expresses Anger at Total Workforce

Virginia (“Ginni”) Rometty became the CEO of IBM Corporation after a 31-year distinguished career at the company that included key marketing positions. Although IBM remained an internationally respected business enterprise with annual sales of about $115 billion, the company was not performing as well as Rometty and Wall Street analysts had expected. When assigned the CEO position, Rometty was supposed to get IBM back on a smoother path of progress. Apparently fed up with the company’s lack of substantial progress, in April 2012, Rometty expressed anger toward employees in a five-minute video. All 434,000 employees were told by their leader to step up by working faster and more effectively. She wanted them to more proactively and productively engage customers, and stop letting big deals slip away to the competition. Rometty then focused some of the blame toward the sales staff, particularly for poor sales in the quarter preceding the video release. She said that sales representatives had failed to close on a number of software and hardware deals. Rometty expressed particular disappointment at a failed attempted software sale to a major retailer. She said, “We were too slow to understand the value and then engage on the approval and the sign-off process.” The result was that the sales staff did not get the job done. Six months later, Rometty decided to criticize the workforce again, this time in an e-mail. “Ours is a pay for performance culture and we must all be committed to take action to address our performance gaps,” she said. Rometty also noted that sales of hardware continued to perform poorly, particularly in growth market countries. Both in the video and the e-mail, Rometty did express optimism about the company’s ability to overcome its lackluster sales performance. She concluded that “Our fundamentals are strong and our future is in our own hands. I know we will confront this honestly and with urgency.” She added that in moments like this IBMers rise to the occasion, and go on the offense rather than retreating.

  1. What are your impressions of this message to the workforce? Is the message motivating or will it damage motivation? Is there anything that you would have changed in the message? If so, what and why?
  2. What tips can you take from the case study and the Reading to improve your conflict management communication skills?
  3. How does this case study add to or change your thoughts on leadership?
  4. What ideas from the case study will you add to your leadership profile?

Scholarly Activities Paper

Throughout the RN-to-BSN program, students are required to participate in scholarly activities outside of clinical practice or professional practice. Examples of scholarly activities include attending conferences, seminars, journal club, grand rounds, morbidity and mortality meetings, interdisciplinary committees, quality improvement committees, and any other opportunities available at your site, within your community, or nationally.

You are required to post one scholarly activity while you are in the BSN program, which should be documented by the end of this course. In addition to this submission, you are required to be involved and contribute to interdisciplinary initiatives on a regular basis.

Submit, as the assignment, a summary report of the scholarly activity, including who, what, where, when and any relevant take-home points. Include the appropriate program competencies associated with the scholarly activity as well as future professional goals related to this activity. You may use the ATTACHED “Scholarly Activity Summary” resource to help guide this assignment.

While APA format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation

Prewriting and Outlining for the Narrative Essay

This week, you will be preparing for next week’s essay: the narrative. Take a moment and review the directions for the Week 3 narrative essay. Once you have a topic you want to write your narrative about, you will complete this two part assignment: prewriting and outlining.

Part I

The first part of this assignment will help you “flesh out” your topic. Take 10-15 minutes to free write about your topic. Chapters 4 and 5 in your textbook can help you decide what kind of free writing you want to do, but don’t feel restricted by one genre. Write down everything that pertains to your topic, including questions your readers might have. Don’t worry about grammar or sentence structure; this is a brainstorming activity.

Part II

Next, create an outline as a preliminary structure for the narrative essay. Use several of the outlining rules on pp. 111-115 of The Writer’s Way, but be sure to include the following:

Outline in three to five parts only (rule no. 1)

Don’t describe; summarize (no. 5)

Outline whole sentences only (no. 8)

You may use as many of the other rules as you feel necessary. The goal is to present a structure for how your final essay may look. As such, an outline is not a series of paragraphs or a rough draft.

Please submit your responses to both prompts in a single document.

Health Care Operations

Part 1:

Choose a company or an industry in which you have worked or would like to work. It could be a hospital or a physician practice.

Write a 700 to 1000 word paper and include the following:

  1. Identify all the important stakeholders for the entity.
  2. Determine the primary aims/objectives of each stakeholder.
  3. Assess the power of each stakeholder to affect the company’s strategic plans, and how it may apply that power.
  4. Explain how the company might respond to the possible actions of each stakeholder.
  5. Recommend tradeoffs that company managers could make to accommodate the stakeholders in a way that optimizes the company’s own performance.

Include a minimum of three peer-reviewed references, not including the textbook.

Format your paper consistent with APA 6th guidelines.

Part 2:

The following is a generic mission statement for a primary care physician group practice. You have been hired as a consultant by the group to review the statement and make suggestions for revising it. Before you begin any revisions, what information do you want to know about the group and its environment? From where will you get that information?

“Serving all patients in need of care, Riverside Family Care Associates, Inc., a private physician group practice, provides the highest quality health care services to our patients and their families in a compassionate and caring environment. Riverside Family Care constantly strives to provide care in a cost-effective manner and to continuously improve customer satisfaction and patient care.”

Write a 400- to 600-word paper and include some assumptions about the group and its environment, and prepare a draft of a new mission statement, including explanations for all your proposed changes. Be sure to take into account the growing trend toward consumer-driven health care.

Include a minimum of two peer-reviewed references, not including the textbook.

Format your paper consistent with APA 6th guidelines

Children of Divorce Therapy Group Brochure

In many instances, it may be necessary to advertise your group as a method to draw in new members. For this assignment, you need to develop a brochure (one page front and back with graphics and descriptions) that will “sell” your group as indicated in Group Design Part One to the public.

The brochure should be written to apply to a wide variety of people as it should be available in various locations around your community (e.g., schools, doctor’s offices, human services offices, restaurants, agencies serving the population of the group). Complete this assignment in Microsoft Word.

To design your brochure, use the templates in Microsoft Office Publisher or any alternative word processing program. If you do not have these programs, you can use the online template resources on the Word Automation website. Omit/delete items on templates that do not pertain to assignment criterion. Keep in mind that only .doc, .docx, .eps, .htm, .pdf, .rtf, .txt, or .wpd files are accepted, with file size not to exceed 10 MB.

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

This assignment uses a scoring guide. Please review the guide prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

You are required to submit this assignment to Turnitin. Refer to the directions in the Student Success Center.

This assignment meets the following CACREP Standard: 2.F.6.e. Approaches to group formation, including recruiting, screening, and selecting members.

This assignment meets the following NASAC Standard: 91) Facilitate the entry of new members and the transition of exiting members.

Goldilocks
and the Three Assessment Scenarios

If
you have not already done so, watch the Goldilocks
and the Three Assessment Scenarios
video.
Choose either the “too warm” or “too cool”
scenario and compare how the counselor in the “just right”
scenario manages the assessment process differently. Applying
professional ethics and unit studies as a guide, describe appropriate
administration, interpretation, and communication of results in
psychological testing.

Goldilocks
and the Three Assessment Scenarios

Counselor
Is Too Warm

Counselor
(C): Hi. My name is Dr. Nelson. How are you today?

Client
(CL): Ummm. Fine.

C:
We are going to be doing some assessments together. I hope that will
be OK. This assessment is very important to help us get to know you
better, and I want to help you make a great impression!

Cl:
Uhh. OK.

C:
Great! Let us get started C: Ok. Here is the first test you’ll be
completing. If you have any questions, just let me know. I will be
right here.

Cl:
Thanks. I think I am good here. C: Oh good.

Cl:
(stops writing) I will be fine if you have other work to do…

C:
Oh it is fine. It is important that I am here to observe. C: You may
want to take another look at #4 there…

Cl:
Gee. Thanks.

C:
No problem. I am here to help! C: Oh great. I will score this real
quick and give you the results. C: Ok. You did just fine. This is a
brief assessment of your intelligence and you are a very intelligent
person!

Cl:
Really? I cannot wait to tell that to my dad. He never thought much
of me in the brains’ department.

C:
That is terrible! Everyone has their own type of intelligence and
yours is just …less conventional. Cl: Less conventional? What the
heck is that supposed to mean?

C:
Oh..You are your own kind of smart.

Cl:
What? I have no idea what you are saying. Can you just give me a
straight answer, instead of this “less conventional” garbage?

Counselor
Is Too Cold

C:
Hi. I am Dr. Nelson. We will be doing some tests today. It is
important that you do your best because the results are very
important to your future.

Cl:
Oh, OK.

C:
Let us get started. Here. (Slides the paper to the client). Follow
the directions at the top. I will be back in a few. (walks out)

C:
Are you done yet?

Cl.
Yeah, I just finished the last question. ..Here. (Slides papers back)

C:
OK. Hang on. I will score this real quick. (jots notes)

C:
Well, it seems you’ve scored below average. Do not take this wrong,
but I do not think this is going to look good for you.

Cl:
Say what?! What does that supposed to mean?

C:
It is just that most folks do better. That is all.

Cl:
Yeah, I get what below average means! What did you mean that it would
not look good?

C:
Oh. Well, this is a brief intelligence test and it means that you’re
just not that smart. It is OK. I mean, it is not THAT bad.

Counselor
Is Just Right

C:
Hello. I am Dr. Nelson. (

Cl
: Hi. I am ___. (Shakes hand)

C:
Did you have any trouble finding our office?

Cl:
No. Your directions were just fine.

C:
Oh good.

Cl:
What is this all for anyway?

C:
Your employer has a contract with my agency to complete assessments
as part of the Employee Assistance Program. Are you familiar with how
the program works?

Cl:
I think so. Based on the tests I take here today, you are going to
decide if I can return to work.

C:
Well, not exactly. I will be writing a report based upon the work we
do here today, but it is not up to me whether you return to work. You
have the right to review the report and ask questions about the
results.

Cl:
Oh. That makes more sense. I guess my supervisor would have to decide
whether I am ready.

C:
That is right. My report is just one piece of information to help
determine if your recovery is far enough along to make it safe for
you to return to a job where safety is very important.

C:
We are going to be doing several different assessments today. This
first is a brief intelligence test. The purpose is to get a general
idea of how your problem-solving skills are progressing.

Cl:
Yeah. My doctor said that would take some time to get better.

C:
The directions are here at the top. It is important that you only
mark one answer for each item. Do you have any questions?

Cl:
Seems pretty straight forward. Is it timed?

C:
No. You may take as much time as you need to complete it.

90
minutes later….

C:
OK. We are all done. Thank you.

Cl:
When do I find out the results?

C:
I was able to score a couple of the assessments while you were
completing others, but I do not have all the results at this point. I
will be able to put a report together for you later this week and we
can discuss your score at that time.

C:
Can you tell me anything?

C:
Yes. Compared to others who do your type of work, you seem to still
be struggling a little. I remember that you said your doctor
predicted that your full recovery would take some time.

Cl:
Yeah. I know. I am just so anxious to get back to work. I wonder if I
did this too soon. Maybe I should have waited another week…

C:
Some of these tests can be repeated. That may be a recommendation for
me to consider. A reassessment might be in your interest depending
upon the results.

Cl:
Oh? Can retry some right now? I know I would do better!

C:
I am sorry. The tests are only valid if they are repeated far enough
apart. Some would need to be substituted as they cannot be given
again so soon.

Cl:
I guess that makes sense. So, I should just wait for the results?

C:
I understand how important these results are for you. Why do we not
set an appointment up for later this week to review the results
together? At that point, I will share my recommendations with you,
but you certainly have input into what information is shared with
your employer.

Cl.
I would like that.

Assignment 2

IS
PATH WARM

Consider
the case example of Mary, a client who discusses suicidal ideation
with a counselor, which is presented in Chapter 8 of the text on
pages 156–157 of a client who discusses suicidal ideation with a
counselor.

  1. Discuss
which aspects of “Psychological First Aid: How You Can
Support Well-Being in Disaster Victims” from the Center for the
Study of Traumatic Stress. Which aspects would you use to calm Mary,
establish rapport, and obtain more information?
  2. Apply
    the mnemonic IS
    PATH WARM
    ,
recommended by SAMHSA, to this scenario. How would you assess each
of the criteria for the case of Mary? What other assessment tool(s)
could be used to help assess Mary’s level of suicidal ideation?
Present a rationale for using (or not using) that tool with Mary.

Assignment 3

Assessment
of Cognitive Abilities

The
assessment of cognitive abilities draws a range of opinions in terms
of the validity of assessing “intelligence.” Begin by
defining what is assessed. Choose one side of the argument (that
intelligence can be accurately measured or that it cannot) and
present and review the evidence that supports your position. Focus on
professional literature to establish your position. While your
personal experiences with academic assessment may influence your
opinion, it is your growing professional knowledge that will help you
establish a sound and well informed understanding of the relevant
issues.

Part A: Cost of Debt; Part B: Comparing NPV and IRR; Part C: Production Cash Outflow

Part A: Cost of Debt

Kenny Enterprises has just issued a bond with a par value of $1,000, twenty years to maturity, and an 8% coupon rate with semiannual payments.

a. What is the cost of debt for Kenny Enterprises if the bond sells at the following prices?

1. $920

2. $1,000

3. $1,080

4. $1,173

Part B: Comparing NPV and IRR

Chandler and Joey were having a discussion about which financial model to use for their new business. Chandler supports NPV and Joey supports IRR. The discussion starts to get heated when Ross steps in and states, “Gentlemen, it doesn’t matter which method we choose, they give the same answer on all projects.”

a. Is Ross correct?

b. Under what three (3) conditions will IRR and NPV be consistent when accepting or rejecting projects?

Part C: Production Cash Outflow

The Creative Products Corporation produces its products two months in advance of anticipated sales and ships to warehouse centers the month before sale. The inventory safety stock is 15% of the anticipated month’s sale. Beginning inventory in October 2009 was 120,000 units. Each unit costs $1.50 to make. The average selling price is $2.50 per unit. The cost is made up of 60% labor, 30% material, and 10% shipping (to warehouse). Labor is paid the month of production, shipping the month after production, and raw materials the month prior to production. What is the production cash outflow for the month of October 2009 productions, and in what months does it occur? Assume that the sales forecast for December 2009 is $2,500,000.
