Significant Contributions to Public Health – Part I

For your final project, you will be researching an individual and

their contribution to community and public health. Because of the size

of this project, you will be doing the first part of this project in

Week 3 then adding the final portion in Week 5. Details are below

the outline. Overall, you will be researching an historical figure in

the public health world, their contribution to public health, and how

their work helped shape the public health system. Furthermore, you will

be analyzing how their contribution from the past continues to

contribute to today’s public health system and how it might guide future

work within the industry.

Follow this outline to help formulate your paper or presentation:

ACTION: Select one of the historical figures and their associated public health topic

  • Margaret Higgins Sanger/Reproductive health
  • Rachel Carson/Environmental health
  • Franklin D. Roosevelt/Health care administration
  • John Snow/Communicable and infectious disease
  • Luther T. Terry/Smoking
  • W. E. B. DuBois/Social determinants of health
  • Larry Kramer/Health activism

ACTION: Research the individual’s background

  • GRADED ELEMENT: Describe your selected person’s biographical background (i.e. experience).

    • HELP: This can include resume elements such as birthdate,
location, education, and brief statement of their contribution to public
health. (Reminder: biographical information can be easily plagiarized.
Please do not copy from your biographical websites. Paraphrase and/or
quote and cite everything according to APA.)

ACTION: Research the barriers and issue of the time

  • GRADED ELEMENT: Analyze the climate of the time period
in terms of political, socioeconomic, environmental and technological
context in which this person worked

    • HELP: Think about whether this person was up against resistance or was their work welcomed. [For
example, if you were writing on Abraham Lincoln and the abolition of
slavery, you would note that slavery was prevalent and accepted at the
time and the change was welcomed by some and rejected by others]
  • GRADED ELEMENT: Examine the personal beliefs of your person that prompted this work.

    • HELP: You are basically addressing the question: “Why did this
person get involved with the issue at the time?” [In continuing the
Lincoln example above, you would note that black people were considered
property, not people; yet Lincoln believed everyone had equal rights
      regardless of skin color].

ACTION: Think about how this person overcame the barriers and issues

  • GRADED ELEMENT: Examine how this individual overcame and/or confronted any adversities to succeed in his/her task

    • HELP: Questions to consider: What did the person specifically do? Did they have any allies? How did their actions succeed/fail?

ACTION: Think about the importance of the contribution to community/public health at the time

  • GRADED ELEMENT: Describe the final outcome of this individual’s contribution to community and/or public health

    • HELP: Think about this question: What occurred as a result of this person’s action?
  • GRADED ELEMENT: Explain what his/her contribution did for overall community and/or public health at the time

    • HELP: Think about this question: What was the purpose for the community and/or nation? [In
the Lincoln example, the explanation would involve a national
recognition of human rights of all people, regardless of skin color]
  • GRADED ELEMENT: Explain why this contribution was so important at that particular point in history

    • HELP: Think about this question: What made this important for our nation? [In the Lincoln example, you would answer the question: Why was it so important that Lincoln freed the slaves?]

Stan Sewell paid $50,000 for a franchise that entitled him to market software programs in the countries o the European Union. Sewell intended to sell individual franchises for the major language groups of Western Europe – German, French, English, Spanish, and Italian. Naturally, investors considering buying a franchise from Sewell asked to see the financial statements of his business.

Believing the value of the franchise to be $500,000, Sewell sought to capitalize his own franchise at $500,000. The law firm of St. Charles & LaDue helped Sewell form a corporation chartered to issue 500,000 shares of common stock with par value of $1 per share. Attorneys suggested the following chain of transactions:

  1. Sewell’s cousin, Bob, borrows $500,000 from a bank and purchases the franchise from Sewell.
  2. Sewell pays the corporation $500,000 to acquire all its stock.
  3. The corporation buys the franchise from Cousin Bob.
  4. Cousin Bob repays the $500,000 loan to the bank.

If the final analysis, Cousin Bob is debt-free and out of the picture. Sewell owns all of the corporation’s stock, and the corporation owns the franchise. The corporation’s balance sheet lists a franchise acquired at a cost of $500,000. This balance sheet is Sewell’s most valuable marketing tool.

FIN534 week 9 homework 5

Directions: Answer the following questions on a separate document. Explain how you reached the answer or show your work if a mathematical calculation is needed, or both. Submit your assignment using the assignment link above.

In your own words, complete the Mini-Case on Page 562 of your textbook.

Suppose you decide (as did Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg) to start a company. Your product is a software platform that integrates a wide range of media devices, including laptop computers, desktop computers, digital video recorders, and cell phones. Your initial market is the student body at your university. Once you have established your company and set up procedures for operating it, you plan to expand to other colleges in the area and eventually to go nationwide. At some point, hopefully sooner rather than later, you plan to go public with an IPO and then to buy a yacht and take off for the South Pacific to indulge in your passion for underwater photography. With these issues in mind, you need to answer for yourself, and potential investors, the following questions.

  1. What is an agency relationship? When you first begin operations, assuming you are the only employee and only your money is invested in the business, would any agency conflicts exist? Explain your answer
  2. If you expanded and hired additional people to help you, might that give rise to agency problems?
  3. Suppose you need additional capital to expand and you sell some stock to outside investors. If you maintain enough stock to control the company, what type of agency conflict might occur?
  4. Suppose your company raises funds from outside lenders. What type of agency costs might occur? How might lenders mitigate the agency costs?
  5. Suppose your company is very successful and you cash out most of your stock and turn the company over to an elected board of directors. Neither you nor any other stockholders own a controlling interest (this is the situation at most public companies). List six potential managerial behaviors that can harm a firm’s value.
  6. What is corporate governance? List five corporate governance provisions that are internal to a firm and are under its control.
  7. What characteristics of the board of directors usually lead to effective corporate governance?
  8. List three provisions in the corporate charter that affect takeovers.
  9. Briefly describe the use of stock options in a compensation plan. What are some potential problems with stock options as a form of compensation?
  10. What is block ownership? How does it affect corporate governance?
  11. Briefly explain how regulatory agencies and legal systems affect corporate governance.

Disability Accommodations, management homework help

Module 06 Written Assignment – Disability Accommodations

As part of a global environment, managers need to be aware of many legal regulations and customs of the countries they do business with. For this assignment, you will focus on how different countries accommodate disabilities.

To begin with, revisit how the U.S. accommodates disabilities through the Americans with Disabilities Act. Next, choose a country other than the United States and Japan to research. Study how disabilities are accommodated in that country (e.g., is there an equivalent to the Americans with Disabilities Act, accommodations in school, accessible areas, etc.?) Compare and contrast these accommodations with the U.S. information on how disabilities are accommodated here.

Be sure to include a short overview of the selected country and/or culture as a whole. Also include how the accommodation of disabilities affects the management of a diverse, international workforce. Submit an APA-formatted, 3-4 page paper on the topic, including appropriate citations as outside research is required.

art discussions

Art Reaction Journal

Discussion Introduction

Over the first few weeks in your An Introduction to Art Criticism textbook you have been building a vocabulary of art terms for analyzing art. For this discussion, apply what you have learned to critically analyze a work of art from the 18th and 19th centuries, using some of the language of art analysis.

Here is a review of the four-step process:

  1. Name and describe the facts. Simply identify the objects in the artwork by describing what you see.
  2. Analyze the facts. Using the language of art, describe what elements of the artwork catch your attention. These could be elements such as shapes, lines, colors, or textures.
  3. Interpret the evidence. Based upon what you learned in steps 1 and 2, what do you think the artwork is about? What ideas, moods, emotions, messages, or stories do you think the artwork communicates?
  4. Judge the work of art. Do the objects, elements, and meaning of the artwork achieve the desired result, in comparison with other works of art?

Discussion

For this discussion, select one image from any of those found in Chapters 30 and 31 in our Art History textbook. Be sure to cite your reference so that we can follow your critical analysis. Follow the four-step process to describe, analyze, interpret, and judge your chosen image. Format resources and citations according to current APA style and formatting. Post your results in the discussion area.

Resources and citations are formatted according to current APA style and formatting. Post your results in the discussion area.

Response Guidelines

Provide substantive responses to the initial posts of at least two other learners. Using the same four-step process and acting as an art critic, examine the selected artwork. Respond to the following:

  • Describe any additional facts.
  • Identify any additional elements that caught your attention.
  • Explain any other ideas, moods, emotions, or messages you think the artwork communicates.
  • Offer your judgment of the artwork.

Any resources and citations must be formatted according to current APA style and formatting.

discussion 2

Course Reflection

This is a chance for you to reflect on your course experiences and share them with your instructor and peers.

Post your response to the following in the discussion area:

  1. Share a question this course has generated that you would like to investigate further in your post.
