Complexity and volume of patient data

The complexity and volume of patient data makes clinical decision support very challenging for health care providers. The field of Informatics can be used to process this data and form recommendations to assist these health care providers. Clinical decision support systems are used to help determine the nature of patients’ disease state, determine a diagnosis, and develop a care plan. For your Final Paper, select and evaluate one of the clinical decision support systems (CDSS) listed on pages 100-102 of your textbook

Your paper must address the following components:

  • Design
    • clinical intent
    • mechanisms of intervention
    • methods of reasoning
  • Privacy and Security
    • What privacy and security protections are built into the CDSS?
    • What are some of the privacy and security concerns you think should be addressed to prevent unauthorized access?
  • Interoperability
    • What other health information systems (EHR, CPOE, etc.) does the CDSS incorporate?
    • What standards (ANSI, HL-7, UMLS, ASTM, etc.) does the CDSS utilize?
    • What strategies could be used to ensure interoperability with other systems?
  • Incorporation of Internet Technologies
    • How does the CDSS interact with the internet?
    • What internet based standards does the CDSS incorporate (SGML, XML, HTTP, TCP/IP, etc.)?
  • Data Integrity
    • What are the sources of the data?
    • List at least 10 data elements and permissible values for the data dictionary?
  • For your selected system, create a policy to ensure compliance with health information, data exchange or industry infrastructure standards.

The Final Paper should demonstrate an understanding of the reading assignments, class discussions, case studies, assignments, additional research and the application of new knowledge.

        Overview

In the readings for this week, Farella begins his discussion by pointing out that in Navajo, “creation” is rendered as Niilyaii or “those entities that were placed.” Zolbrod’s translation of this event carefully outlines the process of thoughtful and purposeful arrangement by the Holy People. In the Western mindset, the creation in Genesis is characterized as “ex nihilo” or creation out of nothing. Yet, a careful reading of the Genesis text suggests something different. After you have read the Navajo material for this week returned to the Genesis text and read it through the lens of Navajo cosmology. Then, answer the prompts below.

        Theme Topic 2

Making use of the Social-Epistemic reading model, how is the worldview presented in the Navajo creation count different from what you understand the Genesis worldview to be? Be sure to explain your understanding of the Navajo worldview before discussing similarities and differences between the two texts. In part four of your paper, reconsider Genesis as creation via arrangement. That is, if God is a great arranger rather than a creator from nothing (as outlined in the Navajo account), what is the moral lesson for human beings? That is, what is the appropriate model of behavior for human beings?Submit your assignment in a Microsoft Word document to this assignment dropbox no later than Noon on Thursday of Week 3.
Weekly Themes: Using the Social-Epistemic Reading Model In this course, we will be exploring highly symbolic texts that reflect a culture’s understanding of its own values and the appropriate actions of a human being based on those values. So, you will be reading not as a mere reader interested in the objective message of the text (what it says and a repeating of the message as a summary); rather, you will be reading as a philosopher working to tease out how the texts come to have meaning by looking at the purposeful way the text was constructed. In order to arrive at how a text has meaning, you will have to deconstruct the text and examine how its individual parts come to express cultural values in the text. Now, this sounds complicated and for many of you this is your first exposure to close, critical, analytical reading. The key to being successful in this course is in mastering a set of heuristics (questions that aid analytical reading, thinking and writing) that will allow you to structure not just your reading and analysis of the text but also the way you write about your experience in the text. To help you become better critical readers, thinkers and writers, this course will make use of the Social Epistemic Reading Model. In short, this model aids in the analysis of complicated texts in order to extract the ideological contexts that gave rise to the particular way a text expresses the culture that produced it and what that culture values. The Social-Epistemic Reading Model:Starting with week #2, you will produce a written analysis of the reading for that week. I would recommend that you approach each week as follows. First, read the “context” section for each week to get a general overview of the readings. Then, read the “Theme Topic” suggestion to help structure your reading. If you read with the topic in mind, you can more quickly locate the ideas that will help you write your paper. Most important, read with the Social-Epistemic Reading Model in mind. Once again, you can save yourself time by deconstructing the readings as you go—rather than read the material cold, try to reconsider the theme question from memory and then go back into the reading to find supporting evidence for your ideas. That being said, your paper should be organized as follows. In order to clarify the process, I will be using the readings from week one as an example.Part I: Discuss the key term(s) in the discourse and situate them within the structure of meaning they form in the text. In other words, as you read the material, what was, to you, the most important concept or character in the text? Why? What function does the “key term” have in the text? What does it do?Example: As you read the text for week #1, “God” emerges as an important term. So, in this section explain why “God” is a key term by specifically outlining what this “concept” does in the narrative. You will want to avoid abstraction that fall outside the text and focus only on what God is doing in the narrative you are reading. If you believe that God is great because He is Lord of the Universe, that is fine. But, you will need to examine what makes God great as exemplified by the His actions in the selection of required readings. You are encouraged to make use of the secondary sources (Farella and Kass) to help ground your ideas. But, be sure to use examples (quotes) from the primary text (Alter and Zolbrod) to round out your ideas. Part II: Set the term(s) from part one in relation to their binary opposites as suggested by the text. Who or what stands in opposition to the key term you discussed above? What must your “key term” work to overcome in order to realize its true potential? This section is very much like part one, but you are to focus on the Nemesis of the “key term” explicated above.Example: What must “God” overcome in order to establish Himself as a key term? In Alter’s translation, God must contend with the “welter and waste and darkness” that stand in opposition to the order God seeks to establish. So, what function does this opposite to the “key term” have in the text? What does it do? How is it a contradiction to the key term discussed in part one?Part III: Place the terms within the narrative structural forms suggested by the text, the culturally coded stories about patterns of behavior appropriate for people within certain situations. Letting the text tell you the story, what is the nature of the relationship between the “key terms” you discussed in parts one and two? Is it a friendly rival? Violent? Considering the tone of the text, which character exemplifies “ideal behavior”? What in the text led you to this conclusion? Be sure to explain your analysis.Example: Looking at Alter’s commentary, the welter and waste is empty and futile. Yet, the actions of God make it orderly and useful. So, what does this mean? Look deeply into the text and secondary sources to arrive at a sense of what exists, what is good, and what is possible.Part IV: Now that you have deconstructed the text, put it back together in such a way that reflects your newly arrived sense of meaning regarding the text. Simply put, turn your attention to the Theme Topic and specially address the question asked there. So, now you can answer for yourself “what is the relationship between the created and the creator?A Final Word: The point of these themes is to get you to think, for yourself, what these texts mean to you. Ultimately, as we progress through the course and you become more comfortable with the process, you may find yourself reflecting more deeply on your own experiences outside the classroom. Seeing the world as a significant place that has meaning is a good thing. The Particulars:

        • These themes offer you an opportunity to explore the texts using your own ideas and interests. So, what is significant is up to you. I am looking for well thought out and explained answers to the questions posed above in red. Think for yourself!
        • You will have a theme due every Thursday starting in week 2. You must have placed the papers in the blackboard drop box by Noon. I will not grade later papers. The only exception to this will be during weeks 7 and 8 when a theme will not be due as you work to complete your final paper. Just follow the syllabus and weekly schedule and you will be fine.
        • Each theme should be 4-5 pages long.
        • The themes will be worth 50% of your final grade.

reading a small story and writing 250 words about it

Consider the following questions and write a 200-250 word response. You may focus on just one or two questions, but make sure your response is thoughtful and gives your opinion/insight rather than just a summary of the story.

      1. Genetic modification already exists in our world, with the supercow, micropig, and genetically modified crops. Do you see our future as similar to the one presented in the story?
      2. What do you think about the morality/ethics of CRISPR? Do you see pros to a technology that could put an end to diseases? Is it okay to manipulate genes for this reason?
      3. If you had a choice between a naturally conceived child and a genetically manipulated one, which would you choose and why?
      4. What do you think the chances are of Connie and Roy’s marriage surviving? Support your answer by referencing the personality of the characters as you understand them from the story.
      5. Crowparrots – do you love them or hate them? If you could invent a hybrid animal, what would it be and why?

      Organizational Behavior Perspectives

identify an organization you would be interested in studying. You will investigate the organizational behavior in this organization and research best practice solutions for any problems you observe. You may select your own organization, the organization of a family member, or an organization that interests you. As much as possible, you should utilize actual research and real data for your project. Occasionally, you may fill in some details with hypothetical information. However, you are expected to provide documentation (e.g., citations) throughout your work.

note any information you find related to any of the following topics:

      • Systems theory
      • Individual behavior
      • Communication
      • Change
      • Conflict
      • Motivation
      • Groups and teams
      • Making decisions
      • Organizational culture
      • Leadership

Assume that the human resources department of your selected organization has received disappointing results on a job motivation survey administered to all employees at all levels. The results indicate that employees reported lower-than-industry-average job motivation, and management is concerned. Employee comments on the survey included the following:

      • My job is so boring!
      • My boss micromanages me but never tells me how I’m doing.
      • I’ve been in my position for fifteen years, but I am never allowed to provide any input about making the work better.

You have been tasked with writing a paper that reviews the theoretical perspectives relevant to the situation in your organization. In particular, you are interested in systems theory and job motivation for this week’s analysis.

      Tasks:

Write a paper addressing the following:

      • Summary: Identify the organization you select and provide a summary of it. What is it? What does it do? Cite research from a variety of sources, including the company’s website, social media sites, company blogs, industry and trade sources, and other sources. The summary should include the organization’s products or services, customer or client base, areas of operation or distribution, history, main competition, and current situation (whether it is an industry leader, a start-up, or a well-established corporation).
      • Analysis: Analyze the factors that affect job motivation and the internal and external consequences of low job motivation. At this time, you do not need to propose any solutions. Rather, you are using scholarly literature and data (e.g., observations, discussions, events, outcomes, reports, etc.) from your organization to analyze factors and consequences related to job motivation

      Death of a Salesman’

      Reaction Paper

After reading Arthur Miller’s play Death of a Salesman (pp. 1208-1279), write a 3-4 page paper in which you react or respond to the play.

In other words, don’t just summarize the text; offer some kind of perspective or opinion about it. This perspective or opinion can take on a variety of forms, as exemplified by the following three prompts (you may choose one of the following three prompts, if you like, or you may develop your own central, controlling idea):

      1. In what ways is this story timeless, and in what ways does it relate specifically to the time in which it was written? For this prompt, be certain to research the historical, social, and cultural time period in which the play was written, and in addition, consider how the play relates to the human experience more generally. See Chapter 31 (pages 1565-1567) of Literature by DiYanni for more information.

      2. Examine three of the play’s main characters. How are they different, how are they alike, and how does each relate to the play’s overarching themes? For more information, see Chapter 24 (pp. 922-925) of Literature by DiYanni.

      3. What is typically “American” about Miller’s play? What cultural attitudes and values displayed by the characters make it “feel” American? How does the theme relate to the American experience of the American Dream? See Chapter 31 (pages 1565-1567) of Literature by DiYanni for more information.

      4. What is the overarching theme of the play, and how does Miller express that theme using the elements of drama (characterization, setting, staging, imagery, etc.)? For more information, see Chapter 24 of Literature by DiYanni. For more information on reading and writing about drama, see Chapters 21-25 of Literature by DiYanni.

      Grading:

Write a structured, organized essay with a clear thesis statement; paragraphs with unity, development, and coherence; an engaging introduction; and an effective conclusion that reiterates your main points. In other words, write a strong, detailed essay about the play. Revise and edit your paper thoroughly before turning it in. Remember, also, to use quotes and otherwise reference the play, and be sure to cite any outside sources that you reference with both in-text citations and reference page citations. Failure to cite properly is considered plagiarism, a serious academic offense with severe penalties. Be sure to follow standard APA formatting, and remember the 3-4 page length requirement.

The rubric below details the breakdown of points for this assignment. Reaction Paper Rubric Possible Points

      Essay indicates a controlling idea:

A clear thesis statement indicates the essay’s argument, which answers the question about the analyzed poem.

      Essay develops a controlling idea:

      This thesis statement is

developed throughout the paper, without digressions, into a thoughtful, careful, precise analysis. This includes specific, cited quotations and paraphrases from the poem and any relevant outside sources, as well as a discussion of critical theory, literary elements,and/or biographical and historical information.

Essay develops a strong and logical structure:

The essay as a whole has a unified, coherent, and developed point of view, with a thesis statement, introduction that contextualizes

the discussion, properly ordered body paragraphs, and a conclusion that ties together the main points of the essay. Transitions connect sentences and paragraphs throughout the essay.

Essay paragraphs are unified, coherent, and developed:

Paragraphs make one single, coherent point that fits within the structure of the essay. Topic sentences and concluding sentences are used appropriately.

Essay is edited and revised properly:

The essay is written with clear, interesting, sound sentences; appropriate tone; a lack of grammatical, mechanical, typographical, and punctuation errors.

      Essay meets APA formatting guidelines:

The essay has an APA-style title page, uses Times New Roman 12 font, has appropriate margins, offers a correctly formatted References Page and in-text citations, and otherwise acceptably meets APA standards.

      Essay meets length guidelines:

The essay should be about 3-4pages in length
