HS4121 week 2

Background: You have invested substantial time and resources into your degree, and this is a reflection opportunity I hope you will maximize. As you prepare to move into the next chapter of your professional life, I want you to consider how you view the TWU Health Studies program and how you view your professional role.

Task: For this Forum, your assignment is to reflect upon your role in our field and how you describe our field to people outside our field.

  1. When you tell your family and friends you are pursuing a degree in “Health Studies,” how do you describe Health Studies?
  2. How confident do you feel in describing Health Studies to someone outside the program?
  3. How familiar are you with the terms NCHEC, CHES®, MCHES®, and Areas of Responsibility?
  4. Are you interested in becoming a Certified Health Education Specialist, or are you already CHES®/MCHES®?
  5. How do you view yourself in relation to health education, health promotion, and public health? Do you view yourself as more of a “health educator,” a “health education specialist,” a “health promoter,” a “public health professional,” a “public health researcher,” or another title?

Helpful Hints:

There are no right or wrong answers to this Discussion Forum as I am asking about your awareness of and familiarity with professional terms. But I do expect you to answer each question in your post. Use each question as a heading throughout your response to guide your content. The overarching goal is to get you thinking about how you view the profession and field in which you are taking this course.

While you are not required to cite any sources for your original post or peer responses, you are free to frame your answers within the Areas of Responsibility, NCHEC website readings, or any other readings from your program if you would like a “starting point.” If you do refer to external sources, remember to cite properly and include a References section.

Discussion: Concepts of Contemporary Democratic Governance

Discussion: Concepts of Contemporary Democratic Governance

The concept of democracy is not unique or original to the United States. The first documented democratic society was ancient Greece. Ancient Greece actually had a combination direct democracy and representative democracy. A representative democracy is one where the citizens elect representatives to vote on issues for them and a direct democracy is one where all citizens can vote on issues. While direct democracy sounds good, it is difficult to implement because of the potentially high number of people involved. On the other hand, not everyone who lived in Greece was a citizen; large groups were not eligible such as women, slaves, and non-landowners. Preserving the concepts of representative democracy is necessary to sustain the democratic process. Likewise, there are aspects of constitutional democracy to consider when reflecting on the state of democratic governance. In addition, the foundations of democratic governance are rooted in republican forms of government. The intersection of representative democracy, constitutional democracy, and republican forms of government has a bearing on the lasting power of democratic governance as it exists in modern society.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review the articles “Representative Democracy as a Necessary Condition for the Survival of a Federal Constitution,” “Republicanism,” and “Democracy” in this week’s Learning Resources. Consider the nature of representative democracy as it relates to democratic governance.
  • https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/republicanism/
  • Reflect on the concepts of representative democracy, constitutional democracy, and republican forms of government and think about how they impact contemporary democratic governance.

With these thoughts in mind:

By Day 4

Post a brief working definition of representative democracy, constitutional democracy, and republic forms of government. Then, explain how these concepts impact contemporary democratic governance. Provide specific examples to illustrate your points.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

3. be sure to discuss the importance of foreshadowing (if any), sub-plots that contributed to the overall plot structure (if any), reversal(s) (if any), and anagnorisis (if any).

REMINDERS:

§ Do not use “I” statements. The paper is to be written in third person (he/she/it/they). Unlike your weekly discussion Posts, this is a formal paper. Remember that you are focusing your discussion on the text you have read; do not use “I” statements in your paper. Example – not this: (“I think that the author describes…”), but this: (“The author describes…”) . Likewise, don’t address the reader directly (you, your), but focus your writing on the material itself.

§ Don’t embed large sections of the play into your paper! A few lines are fine; anything more than that makes it look as though you are using the play as a page-filler. Remember that quotations are used to support your ideas/analysis.

§ Remember to cite properly (review MLA style of proper citing of plays) – and: Be sure to introduce quotes and paraphrases, so that the reader can’t distinguish which ideas are your own and which are from the source. Use the “quote” (or “paraphrase”) sandwich:

  • Top bread: your discussion and introduction of the quote or paraphrase.
  • Filling: the quote or paraphrase.
  • Bottom bread: synthesis of quote or paraphrase within your continuing discussion.

§ Finally… give yourself time to think, write, and PROOFREAD. This is not a paper that you can complete successfully a few minutes before it is due! Proofread for writing errors and for MLA style/formatting!

§ Reminder about Plagiarism As outlined in the syllabus plagiarism is a serious offense and will be treated as such. Plagiarizing material puts you at risk of receiving a failing grade for the assignment and English 122. I read student papers very carefully and will check on any material that appears suspicious. Ensure that any material that you quote or paraphrase is properly cited.
