Research Project Topic/Hypothesis

Total of 150-200 words

Your hypothesis and topic determines what you choose to analyze. You could be interested in reaction time and age so you analyze the three tasks’ results by age.

You may be interested in gender differences or even gender by age differences.

You may be interested in something else, like if the participant was an athlete or not. You can create a new variable in the Research Report data and put a 1 if the participant was an athlete and a 0 if not. Then you can analyze the data by that grouping.

You could make up a new variable for how many drinks the participant had prior to doing the lab. You could see if there was a correlation between the number of drinks and the time they spent on the lab.

Describe your research idea and topic and what your hypothesis is. Also tell me how you plan (or think you might plan) to analyze the data. Its ok if you are not sure about this- we will discuss it and I will give you some guidance if necessary.

For Example: my research idea is about whether or not age correlates to reaction time. I am only going to use task 1. My hypothesis is that as people get older, their reaction time increases, they get slower. I will set up the data in two columns and run a pearson correlation of time by age using SPSS. This is a very simple example- I expect your idea to be a little more interesting!

Note: There were three tasks in the lab- 1) simple reaction time task 2) a go/no go reaction task and 3) a choice reaction time task. You only need to pick one.

Also, please use at least 50 subjects in each group.

Genres of Application Letters Assignment

One of the first things we should do in examining “How should we live?” is to examine what are the things we want or think we want. Applying for things we want: jobs, colleges, loans is one of the ways we attempt to get what we want. In this assignment, you’ll use the genres of an application call, cover letter, and rejection letter to comment on our goals, pleasures, and dreams in life and the failure to achieve them.

This assignment asks you to think about exploring point of view, ethos, voice, and style. You’ll move through several of these as you take on each component of the assignment.

In the application call, you’ll post what the call is for in terms of an applicant. This should be an unconventional call–something that would not normally be requested for a job, college, or application. Maybe it’s a call for a pet, best friend, or an endangered pleasure that Holland writes about. In this call, though, you should reference ideas, themes, or arguments from one of the readings you’ve done so far. Think Doyle, Miranda, Gray, Liu, or Holland as a starting point for your call.

For the cover letter, you’ll now take on the persona of an applicant and decide who this person and their those will be and how they’re trying to convince those posting this the call that they are the correct applicant. Consider where the conflicts are between the call and the cover letter. Is this comedic or satirical? Or are you making a point with some of these conflicts?

Then, for the rejection letter, take on another persona and decide how you’re going to reject and what you’re saying with your rejection. How does this perspective on the application add complexity and nuance to the ideas you’re addressing? How do you bring new insight and points with the rejection? How do you make your reader feel about the applicant and the rejector?

The genre of this assignment is creative non-fiction, but don’t be afraid to use poetry, dialogue, or other narrative techniques when necessary. The call should be at least 250 words, the cover letter at least 500 words, and the rejection letter at least 500 words.

Commenting on Classmates Discussion

In response to your peers’ posts, state whether you agree or disagree with their answer and explain why. Cite examples from this article.

1.)Cyber attacks can be very scary for businesses and even people because virtually anyone can be affected and in many different ways. This specific case is very interesting and I found it to be quite unreal. So two guys from Russia were brought to the United States for their alleged “cyber hacking” skills and they thought it was a great opportunity to become U.S citizens. In my opinion, I believe that in this situation the U.S government should not have to go through any processes to obtain this kind of data. I could see a search warrant being valid, but it seems the government was able to get a confession from them in an interview. The willingly came out with this information and therefore they need to be punished for their cyber crimes. Since the hackers are from Russia, they do not necessarily have the same protections as a US citizen, however, they should still be able to go through a trial here. Unfortunately, they came right out and confessed to their crimes so there really is no more legit type of evidence then that. The trial would be quick, but we can’t just throw them in jail.

In my personal opinion, I believe that the US government is somewhat effective in apprehending cyber criminals. Since this crime is so hard to prosecute because there are so many ways for hackers to hide themselves. It is up to the FBI to get as much evidence as possible so they can prosecute. Internationally, there are so many more rules and laws that the government has to follow and that makes it even harder to prosecute. So in this specific case, I think the US government did a great job of bringing these cyber criminals to justice for what they did against us. There are so many different hackers around the world and we will never catch all of them, but we can do as much as possible to bring as many people to justice who deserve it.

2.)

  1. What process should the government have to obtain access to this kind of data? The process that the government should have obtained to get access to this kind of data was to get a warrant for search and seizures. They also needed to communicate with the Russian authorities.
  2. Should the government be required to obtain a search warrant, and should the defendant be given legal protections? In my perspective, the government should not be required to obtain a search warrant, there was already evidence that the two suspect having been conducting illegal activities in the united states even if it was done remotely in another country. The defendants should not be given legal protections, they were well aware that their actions were illegal, they were more interested in the monetary gain they were going to get, instead of the consequences behind their actions.
  3. In your opinion, is U.S. law enforcement effective in apprehending cyber criminals? In my opinion, the U.S. law enforcement is still working on strategies on how to apprehend cyber crimes, cyber crimes is a relatively new phenomenon. In this specific case, the strategy that was used was a good one. Some might think that they practically tricked the two suspect into coming into the U.S. to them arrest them, in my opinion, that was the only way to make these two criminals pay for their crimes.

Neanderthals 101 | National Geographic

2. Using your knowledge of natural selection, please explain how the Neanderthals evolved in the specific northern climates of Europe.

3. Summarize the ideas or hypothesis presented in the video regarding the extinction of the Neanderthals. What evidence do they provide? What are your thoughts on this?

Application Assignment #3

For full points, please answer all questions, meeting minimum sentence requirement

In this assignment, we’ll start to look at one of the things that makes our species exceptional – that is culture. You’re read and seen videos that explain that other animals/hominins have culture, but I think it is an easy argument to make that our current culture is at a different level.

Think about this – life has existed on this planet for about 3.5 billions years. Yes billions. Now out of those 3.5 billions years, it has only been in the last 100 years or so that any animal has developed technology that can destroy the planet – and that animal is of course, us. We have evolved to produce and share culture. We have evolved to be creative. However, is that ultimately going to get us into trouble?

Please read the following paper by philosopher, Nick Bostrom. You are only required to read through page 458, however I encourage you all to read the whole paper.

vulnerable.pdf I have attached it

1. Using your understanding of evolution, specifically natural selection, provide a hypothesis of how and why we evolved to produce culture and to be so creative. (minimum 6 sentence)

2. Please summarize the part you were required to read. (minimum 6 sentence)

3. What do you think of this hypothesis? Do you think it is possible that we will one day pick up a “black ball”? What about the idea that any one of our white and grey balls can one day turn into black balls? Meaning, we invent technology that appears to be beneficial but one day will ultimately destroy us? (minimum 8 sentence)
