“You are required to submit your topic/recommendation (about the length of a paragraph), format, and peer-reviewed sources of your project. It should be at least one page but no more than 2 pages in length.”

The following are the instructions for the whole project, but for today I only need what is asked in the previous paragraph.

OPRAH’S BOOK CLUB / FALL 2019 / FINAL CREATIVE PROJECT GUIDELINES

Before announcing Cheryl Strayed’s Wild as the new selection for Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 in June2012, Oprah had taken an extended hiatus from her book club. In fact, Oprah chose her last selectionof the original OBC, a special double edition of Charles Dickens’s A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations, in December 2010. Although Oprah has selected other texts since Wild, this extended delay—the longest in OBC’s history—suggested that Oprah needed time to reimagine the future of OBC on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). And, then, in March 2019, Oprah announced that she plans to take her book club in an entirely new direction by joining forces with Apple TV+ to buildwhat she calls “the biggest, the most vibrant, the most stimulating book club on the planet.” “It is a club,” she claims, “where Apple stores stream a conversation with the author and me live across alldevices [and] across all borders uniting people to stories.”

Your final creative project on OBC should craft a recommendation for how to incorporate the bookclub into Oprah’s media empire (network, magazine, website, and/or philanthropic organizations, etc) and/or into Apple TV+, a new streaming service from Apple that, as its CEO Tim Cook puts it, is“unlike anything that’s been done before.” This project will help you improve your critical thinking skills, your problem-solving skills, your application of knowledge, your communication skills, and yourability to integrate and synthesize course materials you’ve read. Given what you’ve learned in the course about the formation, strategies, successes, and controversies of OBC, you’ll have to put together a persuasive, informed, and argumentative final creative project—where you provide advice on the possible ways of repackaging the book club and back up each of your main claims. The project should include a carefully worded recommendation supported by thoughtful reasoning and analysis as well as a rationale for why your target audience should seriously consider your recommendation. Your project could include a variety of recommendations, from providing a list of specific titles and literary genres that can be included in OBC to offering advice about the marketing, streaming content, and format of OBC on Apple TV+. With respect to suggesting titles or genres, you might consider including a rationale for why certain books and genres would be a good fit for OBC, or if your suggestions differ dramatically from previous selections, make a strong case for why OBC should consider reading a different kind of text. With respect to marketing, content, and format suggestions, feel free to consider a range of different issues: setting of the book club (Should the book club meetingtake place in Oprah’s home, office, or a studio set? Why? Why not?), structure of the book club (Should the club’s meeting revolve around discussion or should there be a lecturing component? Why? Why not?), medium of the book club (Should the club interviews only be streamed on Apple TV+ orshould it also air on Oprah’s network? Why? Why not?), tone of discussion questions (Should the questions be geared primarily around the content of the text or the experience of the author? Why? Why not?), etc. Your project can take a number of different formats, ranging from a proposal, a letter, an op-ed, a podcast, an interview, a video, etc. The key is to think creatively about this final project.

Final Creative Project Requirements

Although they can take a number of different formats, all final creative projects must include the following:

1. A carefully worded recommendation on how to incorporate/enhance/reimagine OBC within Winfrey’s vast media empire and/or into Apple TV+. You can think of your recommendation as your argument.

2. Relevant use of primary and/or secondary sources to support your main recommendation(s).

3. A demonstration of your knowledge & expertise of OBC & its history.

4. A rationale for why your target audience should seriously consider your recommendation.

5. A bibliography that must include eight (8) peer-reviewed secondary sources (peer-reviewed source is one in which an author’s scholarly work, research, or ideas have been scrutinized by experts in the appropriate field.) Cite the works in full, proper, bibliographic form—noting author, title, and publication data. Consult MLA Handbook for citation formats.

6. The format should be a proposal or a letter.

In “Hills like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway, there are many aspects of modernism throughout the story. There are multiple narratives and the ending is open or ambiguous. There isn’t really a theme in the story it is mostly just dialogue. There is an operation that the American man wants Jig to go through. This operation is discussed and talked about in the story but the reader never finds out what the operation actually is. The ending of the story is left open like it is with other modernist stories.

“Sweat” by Zora Neale Hurston is about a marriage between Sykes and and Delia and has some aspects of modernism such as cynicism and faithlessness. Sykes abuses, and beats his wife while also cheating on her with another woman named Bertha. He does not care about her feelings and buys a rattlesnake knowing that she is scared of them and uses it to terrify her and display dominance. Race is also brought into the story as Sykes hates when Delia works for the white people and washes their clothes to earn an income.

There are some differences between both of the stories. Jig from Hills like White Elephants was able to travel freely while Delia was stuck with her abusive husband and didn’t have any freedom. The ending in Hills like the White Elephant was a lot more open then the one in Sweat, a lot of the story was left to the reader’s imagination while the ending in Sweat was more clear. Both couples seemed to be unhappy in both stories but the couple in Hills like the White Elephant were wondering if the operation would bring them happiness while in Sweat, there was no chance for happiness.

To me “Hills Like White Elephants” is a very good literary element heavy story. Especially when it comes to the setting of the story. The fact that the story took place at a railroad junction and the couple in the story were at a decision junction in their life really complements the overall story. I especially like the fact that the story was told from a third-person objective point of view. This means that the story is mostly fact-based and does not given much into the conscious or sub-conscious of the characters. The events of the story are known only by what is said and heard. I like this version of storytelling because it is direct and to the point with detail. It is also easier to figure out what is going on in the story (at least for me) because of the dialogue.

The Story “Sweat” is a bit more one-sided to me in that it focused more on the woman instead of the couple. It also is more focused around the woman in that she lives and her husband doesn’t. The fact that even before letting her husband die the woman decided to end her marriage took guts which is something that was not only frowned upon by society, but courageous in the view of modernism. She by her bold act was transcending societies view of woman as weak and docile to allowing herself liberation through her bravery and circumstance, the death of her husband.

These two stories differ to me in that “Hills” has an ambiguous ended, although I personally think that she made up her mind to have the abortion. The story “Sweat” is a little more straight forward and the tone I sense is more aggressive in that the author isn’t afraid to lay it out there, so to speak. The woman in “Hills” is wrestling with the idea of the abortion and trying to get feedback from her husband/partner who seems to be quite indifferent. The husband and wife in “Sweat” are clearly at odds with each other and the results of the relationship is really a natural conclusion to their conflict with one another.

Winter Dreams DB

Winter Dreams includes many modernist aspects. To start, the time period it takes place includes WW1 and its effect on the character, Dexter Green. We also see the growing industrialization of the world around ant through him as he grows – beginning with his focus on the serenity of the golf course in his youth, to having a business and growing that into multiple locations, and then having many men appear throughout the story who are from many different places and many different levels of success and industry. Industrialization was represented by the people who come and go in both his and Judy’s life.

I feel I see bits of marginalization and alienation through the way Judy and Dexter live their lives too. In each Dexter, against his better judgement, continues to be hung up on the idea of Judy, making choices against his best interest because of this thing that cannot be obtained. Not that Judy is a thing, but I believe it is a parallel for what people aspire to outside of what actually makes them happy. Be it wealth, or class, or love. To chase this thing that doesn’t accept you will only leave you miserable. Dexter, like Judy, self-marginalized and alienated themselves.

This piggybacks into the characters essentially failing to find meaning in their life – another aspect of modernism. Dexter’s journey leaves him a cynic by stories’ end experiencing distrust in society (the wish-washy of Judy throughout, but then a marriage plea that lasts only a month), the chaos of his life and disillusionment over if he could just have her he would be happy. He wouldn’t be. This pattern and obsession of his may even represent something specific as it relates to the inclusions of Freud’s findings. We know his life is doomed to play out this way with it’s open ending as he is still a youthful man with many years to make changes in his life, but he won’t.

Dexter, a man who climbs the social status while being relentlessly in love with a woman despite her arrogance and affection later realizes that he was never in love and that was his younger winter dreams he dreamed. Winter Dreams is a modernist story because of Dexter’s disillusionment, his alienation of luxurious life and the breakout of WW1.

Dexter suffers a case of disillusionment by a status he wants to achieve financially and romantically. Before even trying to reach his social goals while working as the caddy almost representation and foreshadowing of recognizing the false sense of status. Dexter “became a golf champion and defeated Mr. T. A. Hedrick in a marvelous match played a hundred times over the fairways of his imagination”. Where in in his imagination it is his goal, rather fantasy that fulfills the thought of high status to when he actually gets to where he “wants to be” to now “Mr. T. A. Hedrick, who was a bore and not even a good golfer anymore.” Realizing that this “status is fake and not as what it seems to be looking outside in to being inside out. Dexter also has disillusionment with judy who he blindly chases with a status filled lust once again filled by society and his younger self filled ideas of success. Not realizing that Judy was a symbol blown up by her parents’ status and her gorgeous looks. Once she lost that the love and idea of her instantly deflated right before him.

A main pillar of modernism is World War One and the impact of it, which is another reason of Winter Dreams being a modernism story. Dexter “had” to leave for war but had “amount of relief, welcoming the liberation from webs of tangled emotion.”. Due to his confusing and clashing ideas and almost status lust of Judy simultaneously engaged to irene he does not know what to do and have found a way to get out through war. Like many people during that time war stopped a lot of peoples lives and changed it drastically for better or for worse all depending on each person specifically.

Throughout this course, you have explored the ABC Model of Crisis Intervention. Each aspect of the model has been discussed in length so that you have a good understanding of how to use this model. You have learned to ask appropriate questions, create rapport, convey empathy, consider ethical concerns, identify and break down all aspects of the problem, and problem-solve with a client to develop effective new coping strategies.

For the focus of this writing, you will be assigned one particular brand of a single product (Calvin Klein Jeans, Marlboro Cigarettes, Wolfschmidt’s Vodka, etc.,). Examine the print and/or electronic advertising to determine the “proposed” identity of the consumer. The identity is who the product promises the consumer will be, not who the consumer really is. By using the product, who does the consumer become? In order to arrive at this definition of the consumer, you will need to examine the associations suggested or stated in the product advertising.

Your task will be to define the specific, “suggested” identity of the consumer as reinforced by the explicit and implicit messages of the advertising. Particularly consider the more implicit associations of the visual components of the advertising (colors, layout, text, images, models, font, design, etc.,) and the emotional appeals the advertising attempts to induce in the consumer. What personality traits and identifying qualities are passed on to the product and, consequently, the consumer by the advertising? How does the product fulfill consumer desire for distinction, transforming the consumer into an individual apart from others: I own, therefore I am. What are the specific characteristics of the Marlboro smoker ? Who is the Wolfschmidt drinker? Your argument of definition will provide a specific portrait of that consumer, distinct from other brands of this type of product. Look behind the obvious to what promises lie buried within the advertising.

In order to construct an effective argument, you will need to find/study a wide sample of print and/or electronic media ads for your selected product brand– particularly those with implict vs. explicit techniques. Do not depend on one ad since this argument is concerned with defining an overall identity. Minimally, your essay should draw from three to five sample ads.

Be specific in constructing a claim (thesis) that clearly establishes your definition in the introduction of your writing (i.e., What “kind” of sexy do you mean?). Then, make use of the examples from various ads as evidence to support your definition, describing the essential features of the ads that are relevant to the identity that you have created.

Note: Since your description of specific details within the ads is your evidence, make sure you incorporate at least 3-5 different ads by the brand, in order to support your claim.

Example claim: Apple Products target consumers whose self-image is based on fierce non-conformity,wizardry with the internet and untapped creativity. (The evidence would describe how elements of the ads project these three traits that define the consumer.)

Attach a copy of the ads referenced to your draft: copy/paste the ads directly at the end of your essay, or provide a link to them there.

Since the final draft will involve collaboration, it is important that you submit your rough draft by the deadline in order to allow for the process of peer review and moving from rough draft to final draft. Further instructions will follow. On the next page are critique questions to consider in completing the required peer reviews.

When designing room arrangements, the developmental needs of children must be taken into account. In other words, the arrangement of an infant room would be different from that of a toddler room. Review the diagrams of the three room arrangements discussed in Chapter 5 (infant, toddler, preschool). In your discussion post:

1. Compare and contrast the three room arrangements.
2. Critique the room arrangement of your choice (infant, toddler, or preschool). Which aspects do you feel are missing? Which aspects are not needed? How is this room arrangement supported, or not supported by early childhood theories?
3. Describe two to three concerns you have about potential safety hazards in these room arrangements and how you would address them.
