Application: Motivations to Serve

Plato believed that, in order for government to be truly democratic, every citizen must at some point play a part in governance. In Ancient Greece, this meant that every citizen held political office for a period of time. Imagine what American government would be like if every American citizen were required to play a part in their democracy. American citizens have the opportunity to participate in their government and democracy in a wide range of roles. These roles include contributor to a political campaign, member of an interest group or political party, elected official, and/or political advisor. The role that you choose to play is influenced by many things, including, for example, any moral and religious convictions, whether or not your family is or was politically active, or if a concern impacts your community or you personally. What would motivate you to serve?

To prepare for this assignment:

  • Review the article, “Rational Action and Political Activity.” Pay particular attention to the analysis of citizen participation for some ways in which citizens may serve government.
  • Review the media piece, Virtual Community.
  • Explore the buildings within the virtual community. The buildings with dots above them contain content you can view. That content will be a video or text about one of five character roles.
  • After reviewing all the content, select a role from the virtual community. You will use the same role for the remainder of the course.

The assignment (1–2 pages):

  • Explain the role from the virtual community and why you selected it.
  • Explain how the role you selected fits within the landscape of American government and public policy.
  • Justify your response with references to the Literature.

There are different ways of understanding human thought and behavior, and in chapter 1 you were exposed to the many different perspectives that psychologists take in an attempt to understand such things. For example, when trying to understand the reasons behind a behavior, one might look through the eyes of a Behaviorist, Cognitive Psychologist, or Physiological Psychologist.

INSTRUCTIONS:
Using a reputable news website (FoxNews, CNN, etc.) find a current event story about someone engaging in either a positive (helping others) or a negative (hurting others) behavior. Write a short paper (500 words) describing the behavior and discuss how a Behaviorist, Cognitive Psychologist, and Physiological Psychologist might go about trying to understand that behavior.

They assist with banking, financial planning, mortgages, stock, insurance, retirement counseling, and debt consolidation. Cala Hamieh, one of the senior planners for the company, is hoping to extract information from the database. The company has a large database with hundreds of thousands of accounts, but to allow you to rapidly test your queries, you have created a smaller version of the database with a small amount of clients. Once you are confident your queries work, you can import them in to the main Access database.

Instructions:

For the purpose of grading the project you are required to perform the following tasks:

Step

Instructions

Points Possible

1

Start Access. Open the downloaded Access file named exploring_a03_Grader_a1.accdb.

0

2

Create a query using Query Design. From the Clients table, display the client’s First and LastName. From the Accounts table, select the Savings Balance and OpenDate. Sort the query by savings balance in descending order.

5

3

Add a calculated field named AccountTime that calculates the number of days each client’s accounts have been open. Assume today’s date is 12/31/2017. Recall dates must be enclosed in # to denote to Access it is a date. Format the results in General Number format. Save the query as Account Longevity, and close the query.

10

4

Create a query using Query Design. From the Clients table, display the client first name and last name. From the Accounts table, select the savings balance.

10

5

Add appropriate grouping so the client’s total retirement account savings balances are displayed. Add a sort so the highest total savings balances are displayed first.

10

6

Switch to Datasheet view. Add a totals row displaying the count of the last name and the average of total savings balances. Save the query as Total Balances By Client, and close the query.

10

7

Create a copy of the Total Balances By Client query. Name the query Total Balances By State. Open the query in Design view and remove the client name from the query. Add grouping by the client’s state.

10

8

Sort by the client’s state in Ascending order and remove the sort on the savings balance. Add criteria so clients with retirement account savings balances of $10,000 or more are factored in to the query. Save and close the query.

10

9

Create a new query using Query Design. From the Clients table, select the client first name, last name, and state. From the Accounts table, select the Savings Balance. Add criteria so only customers with balances under $15,000 are displayed.

10

10

Add a new field named LoanPayment using the Expression Builder. Insert the Pmt function to determine the monthly payment for a 2-year loan, paid monthly, with a 5% yearly interest rate. The present value is 25000 minus the savings balance. For example, if the purchase price were 25000, with 5000 in savings to put toward the purchase, your present value would be 20000. Ensure the number displays as a positive number.

15

11

Change the format of the LoanPayment field to Currency. Change the caption to Loan Payment. Save the query as Monthly Loan Payments and close the query.

10

12

Close all database objects. Close the database and then exit Access. Submit the database as directed.

What is Character?

In your readings over the past couple of weeks, there was much discussion of character, what it is, how it is developed, and how it is tested in real world situations.

This assignment is designed to explore the nature of character and moral commitments. Write an essay that addresses the following questions:

According to Wright’s understanding of character and virtue, what is character and how is it transformed? How does Wright differentiate a Biblical from a Greek moral framework? Evaluate Wright’s position and note where you agree and/or disagree with him. Defend your positions. How does character relate to the Kouzes and Posner leadership model and Maxwell’s reflections in chapter 3?

In the second part of your essay, you will reflect on Badaracco’s question, “How flexible is my moral code?” How does Badaracco define moral flexibility through his observations of the character, Okonkwo? Is there tension between Badaracco’s moral flexibility and the integrity of values expressed by Kouzes/Posner and Maxwell in “ model the way?” Should there be flexibility in one’s moral code? Biblically defend your response to this question.

1/ discussion

Please watch The City in History Video. Find an element of your hometown or a city near you that demonstrates BOTH

  • one of the “recipe ingredients” for a civilization AND
  • one of the objectives for our Creative Spirit Course.

Please post YOUR example, showing why you chose it to meet the requirements and comment in a meaningful fashion on two of your colleagues’ posts. Try to help your colleagues develop their ideas by offering ideas/examples they might not have considered. Try to avoid short responses like: I agree! You rock! While positive statements are absolutely welcome — take the analysis further.

Please comment on two different colleagues’ postings than your previous discussion board. You may — of course — comment on MORE than two!

Please post your contribution AND responses to colleagues complete by Friday.

2/Discussion

Please create a thread and upload a copy of your “Out and About” assignment.

Please upload your file

Please then complete this discussion

Guidelines

Please offer comments on two of your colleagues’ posts no later than WEDNESDAY after the assignment is due. Specifically, comment on how well your colleagues’ submissions address one of the objectives of the Creative Spirit. Can you support their efforts with an example of your own?

3/ discussion

We are working on Antigone.

Find two reasons why Creon is right. Find two reasons why Antigone is right.

Find quotes from the play to support each side.

Who is correct and why? Who has the best interests of the city at heart?

Let’s debate.

Guidelines

Please post the results of your work, showing why each has a case.

Please then comment on two of your colleagues’ posts. Do so in a meaningful way to earn full credit. Remember — you have a paper to write. This can help!
