Financial Management (lesson 3)

esson 3

Welcome to Lesson 3!

Money has time value. A dollar to be received in the future is worth less than a dollar received today. The ability to compare future dollars with present dollars is crucial to financial decision making. Many financial decisions involve the current outlay of funds, for investments are made in the present. The returns on these investments occur in the future. The concepts presented in this chapter are basic to an understanding of the valuation of securities, the cost of a loan, and capital budgeting. This week you will review a key concept- The Time Value of Money. As you work through the discussion and task activities you will understand how important this financial tool is to financial management.

**(The question was about Do you find any of the characters in the Greek Mythology to be an admirable hero? Why or why not? Please defend your position. In Mythos Book (The Toys of Zeus, Part Two) pg 187 – 300)**

Please reply to these 3 response with 3 to 4 complete sentences

1- In my opinion I consider Prometheus to be a greek Mythology hero. He aligned himself with the powerful Zeus so people looked up to him. But to me what makes him a hero was he was willing to go against Zeus and fight for what he believes in. He sacrificed his own well being and relationship with Zeus by stealing fire and sharing it with man kind. This allowed man kind to open all kind of new oppertunities with fire and he did this knowing he put his own life in jeopardy because he cared for others which to me is what Hero’s are all about.

2- I do not find any of the characters in Greek Mythology to be an admirable hero. Greek gods are consumed with themselves and their own power. A hero is someone who is dedicated to helping others and sacrificing themselves opposed to benefiting themselves. However, the only God to sacrifice themself was Prometheus. Prometheus went against Zeus, the ‘father of the Gods’, who created humanity from clay and gave them the gift of fire. This defiance of Zeus, led to a permanent state of torment against Prometheus as a punishment from Zeus. This is the closest thing to a hero demonstrated in Greek mythology.

3- Most of the characters in Greek Mythology would not be considered an “admirable hero” except for Prometheus. Prometheus and the “King of Gods”, Zeus, were fond of each other and began to work on creating a new race. This new species were an experiment for the immortals and Zeus specifically said not to give them fire so they can never rise up and challenge the gods. Prometheus knew that if he ever gave them the gift of fire, Zeus would punish him. With the gift of fire for the new species, Prometheus went around and demonstrated how to use fire to make tools and to cook, drastically improving their way of life. The reason Prometheus is a hero is because he sacrificed his own good life to give man the gift of fire and improve their lives, even though he knew that meant his good life would come to an end when Zeus noticed what he had done

Question 1 (30 points)
Please review the feature film Arbitrage. You may find the film via various online outlets. Once you’ve completed your review, please respond to the following.

  1. a) Analyze two crimes that Robert may have committed throughout the film and match the facts (from the film) with the two main elements of each (mens rea and actus reus); (1-2 paragraphs)
  2. b) Discuss whether Ellen (Robert’s wife) may have committed any crimes and match the facts (from the film) with the two main elements of each (mens rea and actus reus); (1-2 paragraphs)
  3. c) Apply defenses you think Robert or Ellen may have to the crimes discussed above (if you identify any) (variable length);
  4. d) Provide a reaction as to whether you feel, in the end, justice was effectively served in the film and why. In other words, did it all work out in the end – irrespective of whether any crimes were committed? (1-2 paragraphs)

Question 2 (20 points)
In the United States, adult criminal defendants have the Constitutional right to represent (defend) themselves in state or federal criminal court. This is referred to as representing oneself pro se. Exceptions to this right exist where a criminal defendant is charged with a capital offense, one for which (s)he may be executed. Please discuss the “pros” (possible good) and “cons” (possible bad) of representing oneself (pro se) during criminal proceedings. (1-2 paragraphs)

Question 3 (30 points)
Listen to this NPR piece: http://www.npr.org/2011/10/31/141730624/high-court-considers-when-bad- lawyers-taint-a-case. There may be a brief advertisement preceding the actual program, Morning Edition. Galin Frye was charged with multiple counts of driving with a revoked license. During discovery, prosecutors offered to reduce the severity of Galin’s charges if he pled guilty and served a 90-day jail sentence. This offer was never communicated to Galin and, as a result, he pled guilty in open court and was sentenced to three years in prison. He argued, on appeal before the U.S. Supreme Court, that part of any defense is the conduct of plea negotiations and his lawyer’s failure to tell him of the prosecutor’s plea offer denied him the effective assistance of counsel guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. As it turns out, the Court agreed!

You can read (and hear) the Court’s opinion here: http://www.oyez.org/cases/2010- 2019/2011/2011_10_444, if you want. Please discuss whether you feel the Court decided this case correctly and why? Be precise; use specific references and examples/hypotheticals where appropriate. (2-3 paragraphs)

Question 4 (20 points)
On the night of February 26, 2012, in Sanford, Florida, George Zimmerman fatally shot Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old African American high school student. Zimmerman, a 28-year-old mixed race Hispanic man was the neighborhood watch coordinator for the gated community where Martin was temporarily living and where the shooting took place. Zimmerman shot Martin, who was unarmed, during an altercation between the two. Responding to an earlier call from Zimmerman, police arrived on the scene within two minutes of the shooting. Zimmerman was taken into custody, treated for head injuries, then questioned for five hours. The police chief said that Zimmerman was released because there was no evidence to refute Zimmerman’s claim of having acted in self-defense, and that under Florida’s Stand Your Ground statute, the police were prohibited by law from making an arrest. The police chief also said that Zimmerman had a right to defend himself with lethal force. A jury agreed.

  1. a) Explain jury nullification and provide a real-life or hypothetical example to illustrate the same. (1 paragraph)
  2. b) Discuss how the jury in the Zimmerman case might have engaged in jury nullification. Note: This is hypothetical. The jury did not engage in nullification and, therefore, you are advising your reader of how the jury could have engaged in nullification if it had wanted to. (1-2 paragraphs)

Drafting Trust using template, altering it to fit the facts and medicaid planning strategies relevant to the case

Arthur and Alicia Anderson come to your office in Camden, New Jersey, for estate planning. The facts relevant to their family are as follows:

Arthur is 67 years old and Alicia is 66.

The couple have two children: Bailey and Bruno. Both children are in their 30s and have spouses and children of their own.

Bruno’s second child, Kelsie, is 7 years old and suffers from severe mental disorders that prevent her from interacting appropriately with children her age. She currently attends a private school for disabled children and is being treated for her disorders. It is hoped that she will recover and be able to live a normal adult life, but there is no guarantee of this. Government assistance, including the Medicaid Waiver Program, greatly helps pay for Kelsie’s care. Whatever happens, they want to make sure that Kayla does not lose her eligibility for government assistance at any time in the future.

Arthur and Alicia trust both Bailey and Bruno. They want them to serve as trustees of any trust that you will draft for them. However, they also think that a third person should also be a trustee to make sure that there is a third person to mediate any potential dispute between the children. Both clients think that Alicia’s brother, Albert Anderson, would be suited to this task. Since Albert is 68 years old and so may not be able to assist forever, they also want Arthur’s niece, Shelby Lake, as the backup co-trustee.

The primary purpose of their visit is to ensure that they become eligible for Medicaid assistance as soon as possible. The clients realize that, while they are now comparatively young, they may reach a time that they will need long term care Medicaid assistance and they do not want their assets to be depleted paying for such care. They want their assets preserved for their children and grandchildren.

Arthur and Alicia own the following assets:

A single family residence in Trenton, New Jersey. They purchased the residence in 1983 for $165,000. It now has an estimated fair market value of $700,000. They have no immediate plans to sell the house, but in the long term they are considering selling and moving to a warmer climate.

Brokerage accounts that include a portfolio of stocks, bonds, and cash worth approximately $400,000.

Individual retirement accounts (one owned by each spouse), each worth about $125,000.

A small checking account that they use for day-to-day expenses.

Of these, they want to transfer the first two to the trust. They do not want to withdraw (and thus be taxed on) their retirement account assets and so they cannot be placed into the trust.

Although the primary purpose of the trust should be for Medicaid planning purposes, it is also worthwhile to draft the trust in a manner that limits or eliminates the imposition of the New Jersey state estate tax (which is assessed on taxable estates above $675,000). You should also take into account capital gains tax implications in the event that the house and/or stocks are sold during the clients’ lifetimes or after their deaths.

Please draft a trust, using the template included, for the Anderson couple. Please try to keep all relevant Medicaid and benefits eligibility requirements in mind, along with all relevant tax consequences of the trust. The trust template included, but you must alter it to fit the facts and strategies relevant to our case. Please also omit boilerplate provisions that have no direct impact on the issues discussed above from your draft.

In what way did the American Revolution change the role of American women?, US History assignment help

In your answers be sure to draw on the assigned material to show us that you’ve mastered it. If you quote from a source, be sure to use quotation marks and to cite what you borrow. (Give source, author, page number or website address – in a parenthetical citation). Keep all quotations brief — no longer than one short sentence. Use quotations to clinch your main claim. Your words are what matter most. Please do not plagiarize.

  1. In what way did the American Revolution change the role of American women? In what way did that role remain the same?
  2. Why were the Articles of Confederation set aside? How did the new Federal Constitution in 1787 attempt to improve upon the Articles. Finally, given Daniel Shay’s history, would he have approved of the new Federal Constitution? Be specific and provide, as ever, evidence.
  3. Describe what you believe are the three most important parts of Hamilton’s economic plan? Discuss each part separately. What elements of the plan can still be found in our current economic system.
  4. Define briefly what the Alien and Sedition Acts were. Would a southern planter have supported or opposed these Acts? An Irish immigrant in Boston working on the wharves? Thomas Jefferson? Speculate on what the opinion of each would be given what you’ve learned in chapter 8.
  5. How specifically was the work experience transformed under the Industrial Revolution? Be specific. Was the typical female factory worker at, say, the Lowell factories, empowered or exploited by this transformation?
  6. What was the impact of two key inventions — the cotton gin and the railroad — on America between 1800 and 1850?

HCS 440 Week 1 Discussion q 2

Health_Care_Economics_Chapter02.pdf

This week provides a look at the history of economics and introduces you to basic economic terms from a health care provider perspective. You and your family are an economic microcosm. Every day, you make choices on supply and demand. You have a limited supply of resources and competing demands. Some choices are elastic. You can wait for a better price or a greater choice before you make your purchase. Other items are inelastic. Despite the price, you must heat your home and put gas in your car for instance. Once you apply these basic economic terms to life, you are ready to consider current economic trends in health care. This week’s readings will introduce you to the historical reasoning for the spiraling cost of health care that we experience today. As you read the material and start your assignments, you will see we have a difficult challenge for today and for the future.

Consider that economic impacts can be found in the areas of political, social, medicine and technological influence, to mention a few. As you think about our Week One readings and the historical evolution of health care from an economic perspective, think of the economic impacts today that contribute to the cost of health care.

Choose one economic issue we are faced with today to discuss with us and why that you believe is a challenge today. Support your assertions with examples, facts, figures or other information. Practice using the new terminology you learned so as to be comfortable using the terminology correctly.

Body of Research Paper

Follow the directions below for the completion of the body paragraphs draft assignment for Unit VI. If you have questions,

please email your professor for assistance.

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to continue drafting your academic argumentative research paper.

Description: In this assignment, you will write three to four body paragraphs according to the form that is explained in

“Lesson 3: The Body Paragraphs.” The following requirements must be included in the assignment:

Body Paragraphs: You will construct three to four paragraphs comprised of five to seven sentences each. Each

paragraph should be between 150-200 words. At a minimum, this portion of the paper should be around 450-600 words

(for three to four paragraphs); a body section of this length will meet the minimum requirements of the assignment. The

following components must be included in each body paragraph (in the following order).

Sentence 1: Point/reason sentence: This topic sentence will contain one of your reasons.

Sentence 2: Explanation: In this sentence, you provide information that further develops or explains Sentence 1.

Sentence 3: Illustration: This sentence introduces evidence that supports the reason that is presented in Sentence 1.

Sentence 4: Explanation of the illustration: Because the evidence does not necessarily stand on its own, you need to

provide explanation so that the reader will understand how you interpreted the evidence to come to your reason.

Sentences 5-6: Second illustration and explanation (optional): You may choose to include a second piece of evidence

that is then followed by an explanation.

Last Sentence: Transition: In this sentence, you will signal to the reader that you will be moving on to another point in

the next paragraph. You do this to ease the movement from one point to another.

Be sure to include the introduction and literature review you have already created and revised.

Use APA conventions to cite and reference all sources used to support your argument.
