the importance of qualitative thinking in research and used your knowledge to
compose your own Qualitative Research Plan. This Application will give you an
opportunity for self-assessment as you analyze your progress in the course.

To prepare for this Application:

• Assess your progress and
  skills with qualitative reasoning and analysis. Where do you still need to
  improve, and what is your plan for improving these skills?
• Consider what role this
  course has played in helping you determine an approach to your
  Dissertation topic. Has your original topic and approach changed? Why?
  How? How does this reflect how you have developed as a researcher?

W08A1 : Part 1 Directions – For this assignment, evaluate the above network diagram for a basic small marketing firm in San Francisco, CA. You have been asked to write-up
a basic risk assessment for this company. In the first part, brainstorm and list every risk you can imagine (realistic for this company) include virtual, physical and
“stupid” in your listing. Provide a brief one-to-two sentence overview for each risk you list. In the second section, pick the top risk and create a Quantitative RA (last
week) for a single loss expectancy. Each event will have it’s own price tag and amount of downtime. The values for each device is listed as “P” for physical cost and
“V” for the estimated value of the data on each device. Each day the network is down results in a loss of $86,000.00.

W08A2 : Take the above network diagram and identify all single points of failure. Once you find one, describe why it is a SPOF and offer two or three solutions to compensate for this SPOF. In the last section, take one solution from each SPOF and research the cost for implementation.

1. What four elements make for the perfect recipe for fraud?

The four elements mentioned that make for the perfect for fraud are Incentive, Opportunity, and Attitude/Rationalization.

2. How do they apply to everyday business?

They apply to everyday business because it is most likely to occur in accounting, customer service, sales or purchasing, etc. All of these are found in everyday businesses because of things such as economic turndowns which have happened in the past. Oftentimes businesses are struggling and when there’s not much else to do they end up resorting to fraud as a means to save their business.

3. What conditions make fraud more likely to happen? Any thoughts or suggestions on how to prevent fraud from happening? (For full credit on this assignment, please opine to at least one of your classmates’ responses to this 3rd question only. )

The conditions that make fraud more likely are economic downfalls, oftentimes businesses hit rough patches and unfortunately their business don’t make the amount of money necessary to keep them afloat. The people who feel this pressure are those who run the business, oftentimes they are put under pressure to reach certain numbers and to do this they resort to fraud. Another condition that makes fraud more likely to happen is giving one person more power than others. I think a possible way to prevent fraud is to constantly check bank accounts and to stay informed as to how the company is doing. Although keeping businesses afloat is important, people who work for these businesses shouldn’t have to be pressured to resort to fraud in order to meet the quote that those above them expect.
