Leave Your Name at the Border

Step 1:

Carefully read through “Leaving Your Name at the Border” by Manuel Muñoz. (Attached)

Step 2:

Fill out an annotation worksheet for the reading. Attached

Step 3:

Answer the following questions about the reading. These answers can be submitted as a text submission or added to the end of your annotation worksheet.

  1. What does it mean to “anglicize” a word, a name?
  2. Why, according to the writer, do many people in California’s Central Valley, “regardless of the speaker’s background,” Anglicize the pronunciation of Mexican names? Consider his explanations regarding the demographics of the small towns in the region and the prevailing perceptions of Spanish.
  3. Munoz claims that the Anglicization of his stepfather’s name “ties into something bigger than learning English” (par. 14). Explain what he means by “something bigger.” How does this relate to the idea of cultural borders within the same physical space/border?
  4. In paragraph 8, Munoz mentions the stigma associated with speaking Spanish, saying that “Spanish was and still is viewed with suspicion.” Do you agree that there is stigma with speaking Spanish in the United States? Why or why not? How is that a reflection of Spanish culture within the physical borders of the U.S?
  5. In paragraph 9, what does Munoz realize about what it means to be “white: and “American.” What is his realization? Why is it significant?

Project Topic and Feasibility Paper for my Advanced Business Statistics class.

As preparation for the final research paper, formulate a theory about the correlation between a measurable dependent variable (the effect) and measurable independent variables (the causes).

The topic area you need to consider is pay and performance in Major League Sports.

Be sure to have at least two independent variables for proposed research paper. The topic proposal should include the following four items which serve as the foundation for the final research paper after instructor feedback is given.

1) Purpose Statement

In one paragraph, state the correlation and identify the primary independent variables.

State the correlation as in the following:

“The dependent variable _______ is determined by independent variables ________, _________, ________, and ________.”

Identify and defend the “primary” independent variable, or the variable believed to have the strongest impact on the dependent variable:

“The most important independent variable in this relationship is ________ because _________.”

2) Definition of Variables

For each variable, write a single definition paragraph talking about the variable. Paragraphs should be in this order: dependent variable, primary independent variable, and three independent variables.

In addition to defining the independent variables, defend why each determines the dependent variable.

For the primary independent variable, at least two research sources that discuss the variable also must be cited. These sources need not be technical documents but should contain evidence to justify the relationship between the primary independent variable and the dependent variable. List these sources in the Works Cited (reference) page.

**Note: Citations from encyclopedias, Wikipedia, blogs, abstracts, or non-governmental websites are not acceptable research sources.

3) Data Description

For each of the variables, at least 30 observations of cross-sectional or time-series data must be obtained. Thus for the final research paper, a data matrix that is at least 30 rows by numbers of variables must be presented.

In one paragraph, identify the data sources and describe the data (e.g., which government agencies supply the data, which methods are used to compile them, when they were collected, etc.).

4) Works Cited Page

The final page of the proposal should be a Works Cited page listing the two research sources for the primary independent variable and the data sources, with a separate citation for each table of data, including specific table numbers for each of the sources.

Essay Draft

There are over 7, 000 different languages across the globe and each has a unique sound, vocabulary, and structure. Most importantly, these languages shape the way we think, and Lera Boroditsky shares some examples of how these languages affects individuals interpretation on of time and space, also language has an early effect on time, and can even shape how things have personal weight to us and how we think about anything named by a noun. For instance, the Aboriginal community in Australia uses cardinal directions instead of left and right to the multiple words for blue in Russian that suggest the answer is a resounding yes (Boroditsky). Essentially, the beauty of linguistics is that it shows people how flexible and ingenious the human brain is .however we are losing so much linguistic diversity.

Moreover, food is a big part of the Indian holiday; however, in most parent’s home heart made Indian food is an everyday fixture. For instance, every night they must have wounds of basmati rice, baby eggplants stewed in spices used to hold up to her face like collards greens, earrings until one grew up. Mainly, best of everything was that author’s brother, and her dad was always spoiled, but since she was the youngest, she was the most spoiled with delicious meals. And as she has gotten older, she has been trying to learn her mother’s recipe by herself (Koul).

In How to Get Your Green Card in America, Sarah Thankam Mathews (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. describes her life as an illegal immigrant and how she got an American green card. Primarily, before arriving in North America, she had stayed in Oman for 14 years. But the author describes that nothing ever came easily since life before and after immigration was different, for example, the old experience, bad, good rattled her like broken gadgetry. Also, the things her family and had left never got back (Mathews). This was only because her parents wanted their daughter to get a quality education, to be respectable, and to be able to walk by herself fearlessly.

Negin Farad, on the other hand, uses social commentary and comedy to undercut the stereotypes in her culture cleverly. Primarily, in this talk she speaks on her documentary, The Muslims Are Coming which basically narrates her battle with the MTA in New York and offers a comprehensive breakdown of the various types of haters she came across in her line of duty, they include the trolleys, the drive-by haters, the mission-oriented, and the swing haters. Therefore, according to her talk, comedy is the best weapon for fighting the haters since approaches such as war have failed (Farsad).
