Assignment 1.2: Industrialization After the Civil War Final Paper

Assignment 1.2: Industrialization After the Civil War Final Paper

After
the Civil War, the United States became a much more industrialized
society. Between 1865 and 1920, industrialization improved American life
in many ways. However, industrialization also created problems for
American society. Consider events that took place after the Civil War
and discuss ways that industrialization affected the U.S. between 1865
and 1920.

You have already developed a thesis
statement and developed an outline in which you identify three main
points relevant to your topic. Now you will develop the final paper in
which you explore your main points in detail.

Write a three to five (3-5) page paper in which you:

  1. Introduce your paper with your previously crafted thesis statement.
  2. Discuss
three (3) major aspects of industrialization between 1865 and 1920.  In
your response, consider society, the economy, and politics.
  3. Identify
three (3) specific groups that were affected by industrialization and
provide two examples for each group describing how the group was
affected. (Consider issues such as race, ethnicity, gender, child labor,
    etc.)
  4. Summarize how industrialization affected the life of the
average working American during this period. Use specific examples and
    details.
  5. Use at least three (3) academic references besides or in addition to the textbook. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be
typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with
one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA
style or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any
    additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the
title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the
course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are
not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Identify
and discuss the different ways that the heritage of slavery, the Civil
War, the Reconstruction, and segregation have shaped America’s history.
  • Summarize
and discuss the ways that formal policies of government have influenced
the direction of historical and social development in the United
    States.
  • Recognize the major turning points in American history since the Civil War.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in contemporary U.S. history.
  • Write clearly and concisely about contemporary U.S. history using proper writing mechanics.

Determine Future Challenges and Opportunities for a Specific Community College Environment

For this assignment, write a paper relating to the challenges faced for community colleges in general or specific community college(s) with which you are familiar over the next decade. Include the following in your paper:

  • Identify 3 – 5 specific problems and opportunities that you see within this community college.
  • Describe approaches you see as having potential to meet the expectations of those they educate and those they serve.
  • The problems and opportunities you identify along with the approaches recommended should be based on personal observations within the field as well as primarily based on relevant literature, including both the textbook and peer-reviewed published literature in higher education.
  • A suggested outline for the paper is provided below.

Suggested Outline:

  • Cover Sheet
  • Table of Contents
  • Introduction/Background Information
  • Problem Statement
  • Literature Review
  • Conclusions/Recommendations
  • References
  • Appendices (if relevant)

Length: 12-15 pages not including title and reference pages
References: Minimum of 7 scholarly resources.

Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your paper should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards

Prospecting and Interviewing a Business to Business Sales Professional

Part 1: (2 Marks) Due Date: Class 4

Create a prospect listof 10 potential candidates (20 is preferable)that you will be calling to secure an appointment for an information interview. Your prospects must have a minimum of 5 years of Business to Business salesexperience. You may choose to source these potential contacts from any of the numerous sources we discussed in class (Scott’s directory, Sedar, etc.). Your library orientation session will have given you the tools to complete this more efficiently.

Students must work off their prospect list which is based on people they do not know(friends, relatives, work colleagues are not included) and that they have either researched or have been referred to them through their network of contacts.

We are already heading into week 3, so this is an early heads up regarding your Prospecting Assignment.

You need to find partners to do the assignment. Preferably Scott’s Directory or Sedar both free in the library.

Part 1:requires that you source 10 potential companies(20 is preferable) to find a “Business to Business Sales rep.” Think industrial NOTconsumer companies. If you still insist on the consumer space, go for distributors who sell to retailers. So, NOretail stores, banks or real estate agents(unless they are commercial/ICI). Focus on companies with more than 100 employeesin Scott’s Directory or Sedar.com. This is a “real world” assignment. Many students have gotten job offers from this assignment.

You can also use your network if you like. Because after part 1, in Part 2 you must secure an appointment with a “Business to Business Sales Rep.” good sources include (but are not limited to):

Manufacturing, Pharmaceutical/Medical industry, Restaurant/Bar Suppliers, Construction equipment

Pick an industry you like or might want to work in, this project has NOTHING TO DO with your Role Plays in this course.

If you work in a retail location, find out who the sales reps are that sell to your place, it’s that easy.

If you rush part 1, part 2 and 3 will be very bad, there is NO way to self-correctafter picking the wrong companies in Step 1 OTHER THAN REDOING THE WHOLE THING, SO DON’T cut corners in Part 1.

Critical Thinking Exercises :

Case Study #1: Mountainview College Department of Nursing

Mountainview Community College , an associate degree-granting college, is located in a medium-sized metropolitan city of approximately 400,000 inhabitants. Health facilities include four hospitals, several-drop in clinics staffed by physicians and primary health care nurse practitioners; and a visiting nurse service in which all community-based health care except medical care is coordinated. The College provides business, technology, community service, and health science programs to approximately 6500 full and part-time students. Among the programs is a 2-year, associate-degree nursing (ADN) program. Springhaven University is also located in the city and offers a 4-year baccalaureate nursing (BSN) program. In addition to offering the 2-year ADN program, Mountainview College has entered into a collaborative partnership with Springhaven University, to offer the first two years of the BSN program. Springhaven will offer the third and fourth years. There is agreement to develop a new curriculum together. Participants from both institutions and the health community are working collaboratively to develop the new BSN curriculum.

1. Describe matters that the dean of nursing at Springhaven University and the Chair of the nursing department at Mountainview Community College should discuss about leadership of the collaborative curriculum development project.

2. What factors should be considered when deciding on leadership for the collaborative curriculum development process?

3. How might a curriculum leader be selected or appointed? Who should the leader be? Should there be two leaders, one for each institution? Why or why not? How could community nursing leaders contribute to the leadership of the curriculum development enterprise?

4. What should be included in a faculty development program to prepare potential curriculum leaders?

Case Study #2: Old Ivy University College of Nursing

Old Ivy University College of Nursing offers BSN, BSN completion, MS, and PhD programs. It is located in a large metropolitan city of approximately 2,500,000 inhabitants. Health facilities include twelve hospitals, nurse practitioner clinics, home health services, and drop-in clinics. The university provides graduate and undergraduate programs to 52,000 full-and part-time students in a full range of programs.

The College of Nursing has approximately 1300 students, of whom approximately sixty percent are full-time, and these mainly in the BSN program. The BSN program has been accredited. Although the curriculum content and teaching-learning approaches have been updated periodically, the overall structure of the curriculum and the location of clinical experiences have undergone little change. Most faculty members believe that the curriculum has lost its unity and that it is time to develop a new curriculum with more progressive philosophical approaches and learning experiences.

Most faculty teaching classroom courses in the BSN program have a PhD degree; some have a master’s degree. Some clinical instructors have master’s degrees, although the majority has a BSN. Doctorally-prepared faculty teach in the MS and PhD programs although most without an undergraduate teaching assignment do guest lectures in the BSN program.

Dr. Lumella, the Dean of the College of Nursing, is supportive of the undergraduate faculty’s proposal to design a completely new curriculum. She has appointed Dr. Beverly Eme, an experienced and long-time faculty member, as the curriculum leader. Dr. Eme is a popular choice since she teaches in the BSN program and is highly supportive of faculty colleagues. Dr. Eme begins to plan how to proceed with her colleagues.

1. How can Dr. Eme help the faculty choose a change theory to guide their overall process?

2. What committees could be struck in order to facilitate curriculum development? What purposes would they serve? How should committee members be selected or appointed? Who should the members be?

3. If some of the faculty teaching in the MS and PhD programs are reluctant to participate in undergraduate curriculum development, how could Dr. Lumella and Dr. Eme encourage them to do so?

4. What decision-making approaches would be effective for the curriculum developers?

5. What could be a practical work plan for developing the curriculum? What are the logistical factors associated with joint curriculum planning by faculty members of various degree levels?

6. What potential is there for publication arising from curriculum development? How might faculty determine authorship?

7. What resources might be needed for the curriculum work to be achieved?

8. What faculty development activities would be helpful?

Assignment Content

  1. Working in business management means taking on responsibility to lead your organization in a variety of situations. Part of that responsibility is understanding where an organization has been and where it’s going. In this course, you put yourself in the shoes of a manager and use resources to make decisions on where an organization is heading in respect to business needs, organizational structure, leadership strategies, and change management. Some of the information needed may be easy to locate, but other information may take time and effort to find, Some may even need assumptions based on research. These research and strategizing skills will be useful in your business management career.
Select a company and learn about its history. This will prepare you for your Wk 2 Analysis.
Review at least 3 companies from Business Source Complete SWOT Analyses.
Note: Some reports are more recent than others. It’s in your best interest to find a company with a recent (within 2 years) report.
Select 1 global company from Business Source Complete: SWOT Analyses to use for the next 5 weeks (this will sometimes be referred to as “your company”).
Create a chart or outline that conveys the following information:

    • Name of company
    • Industry
    • Brief history of company
    • At least 3 milestones from the company’s history
    • 3 resources (in addition to Business Source Complete) where you can locate company information in future weeks. This may include company websites, current employees, journals, etc.
    • Define 1 new unique business opportunity the company can do to increase their competitive advantage.
    • Identify a function of management that is needed for this opportunity.

Journal

1.  Indicate the companies you are investing in: Select three (3) US companies that are
publicly traded.  Please use your knowledge and experience and pick, as
many stocks as you’d like. Lastly, make sure you are practicing good
diversification. Jim Cramer, Money Manger, on CNBC, plays a game at the end of
his show called “Am I Diversified.” Check out a short clip to get a sense of
industry diversification at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3lDxexupcE.

2.  Sources of Information: There are many ways to find such companies
and the stock prices, including the New York Stock Exchange
at http://www.nyse.com,  Google Finance at http://google.com, NASDAQ at http://www.nasdaq.com,
and http://finance.yahoo.com.

3.  Indicate the amount you are investing in each
company:
 Decide how you will
divide $25,000 across the three (3) companies; e.g. $10,000 in Company 1,
$10,000 in Company 2, and $5,000 in Company 3. You decide the amount you are
investing in each company. You do not have to provide any analysis to justify
your decisions. You must only provide some reason for picking that company. For
example, you might invest in Ford because that company gets a lot of your money
and you hear that Ford is doing well, and will continue to do well.

4.  Indicate the number of shares you are buying,
and the price of the shares you are buying for each company:
Once you decide the companies and the
amount for each company, determine how many shares you can buy. If Company 1 is
selling for $42.16, then you may buy $10,000/ $42.16, or 237.19 shares. But you
cannot buy a part of a share, so you decide to buy either 237 or 238. In this
example you buy 237 shares, at $42.16 per share, investing $9,991.92. You won’t
be able to buy exactly $10,000, or $5,000, or $25,000, but it will be
relatively close.

HIST week 3 Assignment 1 Dealing with Diversity in America

Assignment 1: Dealing with Diversity in America from Reconstruction through the 1920s
Due Week 3 and worth 120 points

After the Civil War, the United States had to recover from war, handle western expansion, and grapple with very new economic forms. However, its greatest issues would revolve around the legacies of slavery and increasing diversity in the decades after the Civil War. In the South, former slaves now had freedom and new opportunities but, despite the Reconstruction period, faced old prejudices and rapidly forming new barriers. Immigrants from Europe and Asia came in large numbers but then faced political and social restrictions. Women continued to seek rights. Yet, on the whole, America became increasingly diverse by the 1920s. Consider developments, policies, and laws in that period from 1865 to the 1920s. Examine the statement below and drawing from provided sources, present a paper with specific examples and arguments to demonstrate the validity of your position.

Statement—in which you can take a pro or con position:

  • Political policies and movements in the period from 1865 to the 1920s generally promoted diversity and “the melting pot” despite the strong prejudices of a few. (or you can take the position that they did not). Use specific examples of policies or movements from different decades to support your position.

After giving general consideration to your readings so far and any general research, select one of the positions above as your position—your thesis. (Sometimes after doing more thorough research, you might choose the reverse position. This happens with critical thinking and inquiry. Your final paper might end up taking a different position than you originally envisioned.) Organize your paper as follows, handling these issues:

    1. The position you choose —or something close to it—will be the thesis statement in your opening paragraph.
    2. To support your position, use three (3) specific examples from different decades between 1865 and 1930. You may narrowly focus on race or gender or immigrant status, or you may use examples relevant to all categories.
    3. Explain why the opposing view is weak in comparison to yours.
    4. Consider your life today: In what way does the history you have shown shape or impact issues in your workplace or desired profession?

Length: The paper should be 500-to-750 words in length.

Research and References: You must use a MINIMUM of three sources; the Schultz textbook must be one of them. Your other two sources should be drawn from the list provided below. This is guided research, not open-ended Googling.

Source list for Assignment 1: Some sources are “primary” sources from the time period being studied. Some sources below can be accessed via direct link or through the primary sources links on Blackboard. Each week has a different list of primary sources. For others, they are accessible through the permalink to the source in our online library: Sources below having libdatab.strayer.edu as part of the URL have a permalink to that source in our university’s online library.

Critical Infrastructure Protection and Resource Allocation

    Requires a sentence outline.

You are the critical infrastructure protection (CIP) specialist in the plans directorate of a public safety organization in one of the 100 largest metropolitan statistical areas in the United States.

Based on the total number of Critical Infrastructure (CI) in your jurisdiction (national, state, county, and local), you have been tasked by the director of public safety to develop some courses of action to inform a recommendation regarding the use of available resources for protection of CI.

The director understands the complexities associated with the many contributing factors and realizes that there will always exist a shortfall or deficiency between essential tasks and available resources. The director also understands there will never be one solution that captures everything that needs to be considered and accomplished. The director will make the final decision based on your assessment.

    Guidance

Keep the following in mind as you work on this assignment:

    • You should base your recommendations by completing a risk analysis using the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA)-approved risk analysis table (introduced in Phase 3), the National Planning Scenarios, and the Joint National Priorities for Critical Infrastructure Security and Resilience.
    • This is a draft formal report.

    Assignment Guidelines

Complete the following for this assignment:

    • Select a metropolitan area in the United States that you plan to analyze for this assignment. Because this project is a preparation for the Phase 5 Group Project, coordination is required with your small group to determine and select an appropriate metropolitan area.
    • Address the following in 3-4 pages:
      • What are 5–10 of the most significant CI assets that exist within your metropolitan area? Explain in detail.
      • Select 2 CI assets from your list above, and conduct a risk analysis on each using the National Planning Scenarios. Coordinate with your small group teammates to avoid duplication of effort in the Group Project during Phase 5.
      • What are the most important resources that the metropolitan area has available for the protection of its CI? Explain in detail.
      • For each of the selected CI, provide a detailed recommendation of how you would use the available resources to protect these CI.
        • This should be the majority of your submission.
      • What challenges exist for the metropolitan area regarding CIP? Explain your response.
      • How will these challenges be overcome? Explain in detail.
      • Provide recommendations and justification of those recommendations to the director.
    • Be sure to reference all sources using APA style.

THE OUTLINE WILL ALSO INCLUDE NEXT WEEKS ASSIGNMENT QUESTIONS, WHICH IS AN EXTENSION FROM THIS WEEK.

The assignment expands upon the concepts developed during Phase 4 and expands the scope of the Phase 4 Individual Project to include all of the CI sectors (16 total). This is a formal information and decision support paper that you are developing for the director of Homeland Security of your chosen municipal community. The director’s intent is to share this risk analysis and resource allocation paper with the major department heads of the city, the city manager or administrator, the mayor, and the city council. The director’s goal is to enhance awareness of CI protection and resiliency issues and to improve overall CI security, planning, mitigation, response, recovery, and resiliency. The director also plans to use this assessment as a means and justification for additional funding of CI projects.

    Use the following sectors:

    • Transportation Systems Sector
      • Rail and passenger
      • Ferry and other port transportation modes
      • Airports and airplanes
      • Bridges
