Organizations, business processes, and IT systems relationships Case

Assignment Overview

This Case Assignment focuses on understanding what an organization is and what business processes are to describe the relationship between organizational structures and business processes. Note that the discussion throughout this case is generic and from a scholarly perspective, not from the perspective of any given organization.

Case Assignment

Paste these instructions on the cover page of your case paper, using a small font.

After reviewing the required reading for this module (and if you have time, the optional reading), write a 5-page paper addressing the following five questions:

  1. What is an organization?
  2. What is a business process?
  3. What generic types of structures can organizations operate under?
  4. Why do organizations execute business processes?
  5. Why do organizations use technology to accomplish business processes?

Important: Note that depending on the author, a process may be referred to as an activity or a task. For the purpose of this module, assume they are synonymous unless the definition used by a specific author has the word activity or task inside.

You should consider approaching the question as follows:

  1. Identify definitions of an organization by various other scholars or practitioners, and discuss the similarities and differences in the definitions. You must use the background reading and/or search for scholarly articles using the school’s academic search tool. Do not use the dictionary.
  2. Identify definitions of business processes (which may be referred to as tasks or activities by some) and the types of business processes discussed by past researchers. You must use the background reading and/or search for scholarly articles using the school academic search tool. Explain the similarities and differences in the definition.
  3. Explain the relationship between an organization, various parts of an organization, and business processes.
  4. Explain why and how technology is used within organizations to accomplish business processes.

Assignment Expectations

Submit a 5-page paper (excluding cover sheet and references, figures, sections with bullets, and tables) double spaced, no extra spaces, and 1-inch margins, that answers the questions using all of the required reading and if possible the optional reading, and 1 to 3 outside references.

The paper will have a proper main heading stating the name of the class, module number, and title of the paper. The paper will also have an introduction that states the purpose of the paper and what will be answered, as well as, section headings that guide the reader throughout the evolution of the discussion.

Quotations should only be used for definitions. Students must demonstrate their ability to synthesize and articulate knowledge from the required reading.

All assertions and key discussion points are properly cited using APA format. In other words, any sentence or paragraph that contains material derived or synthesized from the background reading or other sources will be cited. References are in APA format. All references are cited in the paper at least once.

Ethics and Moral reasoning, writing homework help

Final Paper

Please read these assignment instructions before writing your paper, and re-read them often during and after the writing process to make sure that you are fulfilling all of the instructions. Please also utilize the assignment guidance and the outlined model provided.

Overview
In the Week One Assignment, you formulated a concrete ethical question, took a position on that topic, and identified a reason supporting and a reason opposing that position. In the Week Three Assignment, you discussed either deontological or utilitarian theory, applied that theory to the question, and raised a relevant objection.

By engaging with the course material, you now have had a chance to refine your thinking and broaden your understanding of the problem by approaching it from the perspective of multiple ethical theories.

In this paper, you will demonstrate what you have learned by writing an essay in which you

  • Present a revised formulation of the ethical question and introduction to the topic.
  • Explain the kind of reasoning you think is the best way to approach this question, and how that reasoning supports the position you think is strongest.
  • Raise an objection, and be able to respond to it.

Instructions
Write an essay that conforms to the requirements below. The paper must be 1500 to 2000 words in length (excluding the title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center

The paragraphs of your essay should conform to the following guidelines:

  • Introduction
Your first paragraph should begin with the topic question, suitably revised. It should be focused, concrete, and on a relevant moral problem. You should then introduce the topic in the way described by the Week One instructions, but reflecting the developed understanding and information you have gained about the topic and any necessary refinement of the scope.

Follow this with a thesis statement that states your position, and a brief description of the primary reason(s) supporting your position. (See the handout on thesis statements provided). Finally, provide a brief preview of the overall aim and procedure of your paper.

  • Explanation and Demonstration of Moral Reasoning
This section of the Final Paper will explain and demonstrate what you believe to be the best way of reasoning about the question you have chosen, and showing how that reasoning supports the position you have taken on the question. You might explain the principles, rules, values, virtues, conceptions of purposes and ends, and other general ideas that you find persuasive, and show how they support concrete judgments.

In the course of doing so, you must make reference to at least two of the approaches that we have examined in the course (such as deontological, utilitarian, or virtue-based), and utilize at least one resource off the provided list for each of the two approaches. One of these theories may be the theory you discussed in your Week Three Assignment, but your discussion here should be more refined.

For example, you might find the reasoning associated with Aristotelian virtue ethics to be the most compelling, and reference Aristotle in the process of showing how that reasoning supports a certain conclusion. In the course of this, you could contrast that with a utilitarian approach, referencing Mill for instance.

  • Objection and Response
After explaining the ethical reasoning that supports your position, you should raise an objection and respond to it. An objection articulates a plausible reason why someone might find the argument weak or problematic. You should explain how it brings out this weakness, and do so in a way that would be acceptable to someone who disagrees with your own argument. Then, provide the best response you can to the objection, showing how it does not undermine your position. Your response should not simply restate your original position or argument, but should say something new in support of it.
  • Conclusion
Provide a conclusion that sums up what you presented in the paper and offers some final reflections.

Resource Requirement
You must use at least four scholarly resources. Two of the resources must be drawn from the list of acceptable primary resources on each of the two theories you discuss. For example, if you discuss deontology and virtue ethics, you would need at least one resource under the “Deontology” list and at least one resource under the “Virtue Ethics” list. The other two may be from either the Required or Recommended Resources, or scholarly resources found in the Ashford University Library.

  • The textbook may be cited, but it does not count toward the resource requirement. If you cite the textbook, you will still need to cite at least four more sources that fulfill the requirements stated above.
  • If you need help with finding additional resources, or are unsure about whether a particular resource will count toward the requirement, please contact your instructor.
  • For sources to count toward the resources requirement, they must be cited within the text of your paper and on the reference page. Sources that are listed on the references page, but not cited within the paper, do not count toward fulfilling the resources requirement.

  • Review the article titled “Study Finds Random Drug Testing Doesn’t Deter High School Students’ Substance Use” located here. Be prepared to discuss.
  • From the first e-Activity, explain whether or not you believe it is fair for non-athletes to be exempt from random drug testing in schools. Justify your response.

From the second e-Activity, describe the fundamental effects that a positive social climate exerts on substance abuse among students in school. Suggest at least two (2) ways, in additional to forming a positive social climate, that the society can help students avoid the use of drugs. Provide a rationale for your response.

    PART 2

Respond to statement below: Response must include at least one question

Yes I do believe kids who are non-athletes should be subject to a drug test, just because now a days kids are starting out early and our more involved with drugs. My little cousin is a Sophomore at my alma meter and was caught on drugs and trying to sell them at her school. So I definitely think we should be considered with whats going on in the campus as well as the sporting events. One key program that I know helped a lot of students and informed us while I was in school was D.A.R.E ( Drug Abuse Resistance Education). This was a class we all had to take and it definitely showed us what drugs to look out for and what to do when approached by someone who was using. I believe the parents should be more involved with what goes on in the school whether its with doing fund raiser or at the PTA meetings making kids aware of and showing they care about them, because in the text of the article children are more prone to do drugs if there not in a caring and supportive environment.

What are 10 issues in this court case?

Teddy Ballgame, a student at Endicott University School of Law, is spending the summer as a law clerk in the Massachusetts Appeals Court of Chief Justice George Herman Ruth. Judge Ruth and his wife, who he affectionately calls Babe, are baseball fans and have two season tickets to the Boston Red Shoes games at old Fanway Park. Babe is physically challenged, uses a wheelchair and needs accessible seating which only exists in the bleachers at the park. As a reward for good work, the judge gives away the seats to Friday evening games to clerks and employees of his court.

One Friday morning, Judge Ruth told Teddy he was happy with his work and asked if he was going to watch the big game between the Chicago Cubes and Red Shoes that evening. Teddy answered he was going to watch the game with his girlfriend Carrie Harry who is 19 years old, from Chicago and a Cubes fan. As the workday came to a close, the judge left the courthouse in a hurry and without giving his tickets away for the game that evening. Seeing the tickets on a table in the judge’s chambers, Teddy decided to take them. After all, the judge told him how happy he was with his work earlier in the day. Teddy called Carrie and told her to meet him outside Fanway Park for the game.

Carrie met Teddy on Hockey Way. They proceeded along the street where they saw an unlicensed vendor selling t-shirts with the likeness of Red Shoes all-star player Little Poppy. Although Poppy had been accused of using a performance enhancing drug (PED), he never failed a league administered drug test. Teddy bought a t-shirt from the vendor while a disinterested Carrie read the disclaimer on the back of her admission ticket.

On the way into the park, Carrie and Teddy were searched for possession of illegal firearms and received a free Bradley Jackie, Jr. bobble-head doll manufactured by Toys of Buffalo, NY. As they headed towards the seats in the bleachers, Teddy noticed two open seats between the Red Shoes dugout and the edge of the protective screen behind home plate. Since Fanway Park ignored the Major Baseball Association rule to extend protective netting from behind home plate to the edge of each team’s dugout, these first row seats offered an unobstructed view they couldn’t refuse.

Just before the first pitch of the game, a beer vendor made his way down the aisle near Carrie and Teddy. Since Teddy got the tickets, Carrie purchased two beers for each of them from the vendor. After guzzling her two beers, a lightheaded Carrie decided to go to the bathroom. As she walked by the souvenir stand and into the restroom, a concessionaire believing she had stolen the Cubes cap she was wearing yelled “That’s her!” and locked her in the bathroom where she was detained during the game.

Soon after the game began, a fan jumped onto the field and startled Cubes player Bryant Kris by running aggressively towards him. Security apprehended the fan before he made contact with Kris. While this incident was attracting attention, Teddy saw Little Poppy’s protective batting helmet lying on the ground in front of his seat. He reached down, took the helmet before anyone noticed and asked the Chicago fan next to him if he could borrow his newspaper. The fan obliged and when Teddy placed the paper over the helmet to cover it, he noticed the headline read “Little Poppy PED User”.

The time was coming for Little Poppy to bat. Cubes pitcher Lester Jon and Poppy had been teammates in Boston until Jon was traded to Chicago after his reputation was soiled by Poppy’s incorrect and public statements that Jon cheated on his income taxes and vandalized swan boats in Boston Common. Unable to find his protective helmet, the Red Shoes batboy gave Poppy a replica batting helmet which came with the purchase of an extra-large ice cream sundae. Despite seeing the warning label stating, “This is not a protective helmet”, Little Poppy put the helmet on and stepped up to the plate. Still upset about what was said about him, Jon purposely threw a fastball at Poppy striking him in the head and knocking him unconscious. Jon was ejected from the game and as he walked off the field, upset fans began hurling their Bradley Jackie, Jr. bobble-head dolls towards him with many of them landing in the aisles.

As the innings moved along, Carrie had not returned from the bathroom and Teddy became worried. Paying little attention to the action on the field, his eyes were focused on the crowd when a foul ball struck him in the face fracturing his orbital bone. Seeing what had happened, an usher rushed down the aisle to attend to Teddy, tripped on a Bradley Jackie, Jr. bobble-head doll lying in the aisle and injured his neck.

Rain began to fall and despite a warning of lightning in the area, the game carried on. An EMT working at the park decided to escort Teddy and carry the injured usher under the grandstand so they would not get wet. As the EMT was doing this, a bolt of lightning struck the park, startled her and caused her to drop the usher who suffered a more serious injury to his spine. Fans headed for the exits and the game concluded without further incident.
