Over the last half-century, this text has become a handbook for people all around the world seeking to transform their approach to conflict and leadership, whether in warfare, in business or simply in everyday life. When a squadron leader targets his objective or a boardroom falls under siege, when our neighbors join a zoning battle to protect local parkland, we may find modern-day warriors turning to the Sun Tzu. Clearly they have a conviction that its ancient wisdom has considerable value today. But how might we apply this Chinese text to our lives in a genuine manner? How can it teach us to work more effectively with conflict in a global world?

Each student will write a six to eight-page (6-8) research and reaction paper on The Art of War by Sun Tzu. Any translation is acceptable; however, one recommended translation is by Thomas Cleary, ISBN # 1-59030-225-7. This treatise can also be found on the website www.manybooks.net. Student must also use 3 additional sources regarding The Art of War; these could be peer reviewed journals, articles, additional books on the topic.

In this research and reaction paper, each student will relate the text to their personal struggles and accomplishments in this class and at JWU or to the significant challenges or achievements they have experienced in their lives.

Please answer each question below thoroughly in your response and reaction paper:

  • Are sage commanders born extraordinary or are they trained? How does one become a sage commander and exercise these distinct leadership qualities? What qualities of the sage commander do you feel are most valuable within the SEEM industry today?
  • The book suggests that everyone is a sage commander; a leader in their own sphere. How has your education at Johnson & Wales University prepared you for leadership roles within the SEEM industry (Reflective Question)?
  • Give some examples of the contemplative approach to reading, understanding and working with the Art of War.
  • What is the relationship between trusting the world and shaping the world? Why do you think there is a distinct difference in this relationship? How does this difference effect you as a future leader in the SEEM industry?
  • Review some examples of present “chaos” within the SEEM industry. Discuss the leadership and negotiation tactics that leadership is presently taking to reduce the chaos. Did these actions help to resolve the situation, or create more chaos?

  • Briefly describe the general setting.

An intriguing question for many researchers revolves around the demise of Homo neanderthalensis, Since the disappearance of this species coincides with the rise of modern humans, it suggests there might be a link. Speculation has raged about this topic for decades but in recent years the combination of multi-disciplinary evidence and a greater understanding of the ancient world has led professionals to believe: maybe. One old refrain claims modern humans killed off the Neanderthals through conflict and warfare – but no evidence points to this scenario, yet still, the idea persists. Population densities at the beginning of the Upper Paleolithic must have been very low (by comparison to today) and it’s possible the two groups were rarely at odds with each other over resources. We also know that modern humans utilized a much wider subsistence strategy than Neanderthals, who were apex predators and survived primarily on protein. Consequently, when the climate began to change, the weather warmed, the ice sheets receded and the megafauna began to disappear – this must have impacted the Neanderthal diet more strenuously. Most extinctions are a complex result of multiple factors and Neanderthal will likely turn out the same. Genetic evidence indicates an admixture of human and Neanderthal genes, interbreeding that resulted in a portion of the world’s population deriving part of their heritage from Neanderthals.

It is in the Upper Paleolithic world that something remarkable happens. Culture appears in the form of art. This is the first evidence of not just complex cultural behavior, but also the emergence of symbols and abstract thinking. The Upper Paleolithic was a period of great transition in the world. The Neanderthals in Europe disappeared by 33,000 years ago, and modern humans began to have the world to themselves. Stone tools of the Upper Paleolithic were primarily blade-based technology. They were used to create an astonishing range of formal tools, tools created to specific, wide-spread patterns with specific purposes. In addition, bone, antler, shell and wood were used to a great degree for both artistic and working tool types, including the first eyed needles presumably for making clothing about 21,000 years ago.

Claim: A picture is worth a thousand words, that is why I find “Visual Narrative” to be the most important teaching function. It’s a great way to rely the writes message, thus helping tie all of the information together to gain the best understanding of the message or story. I found the visual narrative in this module very captivating.

Definition: The definition of a narrative given by Bradford Hall is, “A narrative in its most basic sense refers to a recounting if a sequence of events that is told from a particular point of view (Hall, 2005, p. 73). Hall states that there are four narrative teaching functions including: Those of which are The Way the World Works, Our Place in the World, How to Act in the World, and How to Evaluate What Goes on in the World (Hall, 2005, p. 74). As Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie conveyed in her Ted Talk, a single story is precarious and the danger of a single story is that it creates a narrow, inaccurate view and/or description of a person, place or culture. Furthermore, by only knowing a single story about a person, place or culture, we are unable to understand it fully.

Example: The visual narrative “Grandfathers Journey” by Allen Say was a fabulous example of a visual narrative. While watching each slide, the illustrations spoke to me and evoked emotion within, helping me connect with the writer. I felt like I was able to really understand how he was feeling when he created this piece.

Explanation: When conducting my interview for my film project, it is important that I use the suggested interview questions so the project does not turn into a single story, based on a preconceived notions I may have about Ethiopia, which is where my friend Sosy if from. Honestly, I am glad I have the interview question outline as a guide because I guess I do have a single story of Ethiopia within me. I view it as a land with few innovations, small farm communities and tribes. I am looking forward to the single story of Ethiopia within me disappearing as I learn the whole story, the reality of the country, from my friend who moved to the United States a few years ago.
