Discussion: Balanced Federal Budgets

Economists differ in their ideas about using government spending to stimulate the economy. Some economists follow British political-economist John Maynard Keynes in advocating increased government expenditure to stimulate the economy when it is in recession. In their view, the federal deficit will decline when the economy improves. Others favor allowing market forces to restore equilibrium when the economy is in recession. They believe that the deficit stifles economic growth and prosperity.

You can learn the policy preferences of a city, county, state, other government agency by analyzing its budget. The budget is a plan for allocating the resources required to provide specific services and address strategic priorities.

For this Discussion, review this week’s Learning Resources and focus on the implications of the federal deficit on a public organization. Then, select a position either for or against a balanced federal budget. Consider whether the gap needs to be closed or whether there are legitimate reasons for borrowing.

Post a description of your position on a balanced national budget. Justify your position for or against a balanced national budget by explaining the gains and losses associated with your position.

The 2014 Index of Economic Freedom tracks the level of economic freedom in 186 countries.  Economic freedom means that individuals are free to work, produce, consume, and invest in any way they please.  In countries with economically free societies, governments allow labor, capital and goods to move freely, and with few constraints.

The index measures economic freedom based on 10 factors, grouped into four broad categories:  (1)Rule of Law- property rights & freedom from corruption; (2)Limited Government- fiscal freedom & government spending; (3)Regulatory Efficiency- business freedom, labor freedom, & monetary freedom; and, (4)Open Markets- trade freedom, investment freedom, & financial freedom.

Go to the 2014 Index of Economic Freedom (http://www.heritage.org/index/).  Select “Country Rankings.”  Find the “United States” and click on it to read why it is ranked the way it is.  Select and read about two other countries – ones that differ substantially in their rankings.  Next, click “Graph the Data” to visually compare your three countries across the ten factors.  Discuss the biggest similarities and differences.

The online retail operation you recently opened is doing
well but you are uncertain of your pricing strategy. Currently the typical
customer purchases four items at an average price of $11.96 and for an average
transaction size of $47.84. The cost of goods is 60 percent of sales, which
yields a gross margin of 40 percent. You are considering lowering prices by 10
percent across the board so you can better compete with other music
e-tailers.  If you lower prices by 10
percent, you believe that the average number of items purchased per customer
would rise by 25 percent.

Assuming your

According to Joseph Campbell, a scholar of mythology, the following list identifies some of the characteristics of a hero. Campbell believes that the characteristics of a hero have their roots in most myths. 

  1. A hero gives his or her life to something bigger than him/herself, to some higher end.
  2. A hero performs a courageous act, either physical or spiritual.
  3. A hero is usually someone from whom something has been taken or who feels there’s something lacking in the normal experience available, or permitted, to members of his society.
  4. A hero embarks on a series of adventures to recover what is lost or to discover some life-giving information.
  5. The hero usually moves out of the known, conventional safety of his/her own life to undertake the journey.
  6. The hero undergoes trials and tests to see if he or she has the courage, the knowledge and the capacity to survive.
  7. A hero has to achieve something.
  8. A hero’s journey usually consists of a departure, a fulfillment, and a return.
