Paragraph Structure

Step 2 Please read the document below

P. I. E.

Please follow these instructions for writing paragraphs in all your written assignments.

P – Point – Communicate your purpose to the reader by writing a topic sentence that addresses the issue with an opinion based on facts.

-A point is an opinion based on facts, not merely a fact.

-A point is a topic sentence for a body paragraph.

-A topic sentence has two functions:

-It states the point of the individual paragraph.

-It states how the point develops the thesis statement (for an essay).

Example – When faced with hardship, people can use the strength of others to make it through a difficult period of time.

This is an opinion that is based on the fact that many people find help and comfort in others when dealing with difficulty. This topic sentence has an opinion, yet it is based on a fact.

I – Information – Provide outside information to support your topic sentence.

– Information is used to support the point (topic sentence).

– Information is used to make the topic sentence creditable and verifiable.

– Information is data, facts, surveys, observations, individual experience, and published material.

Example – Joyce Butler from Listening Is an Act of Love used the driving force of her children to help her endure long and hard work hours (67).

This information about Joyce Butler supports the point because she used her children as a motivation to help her deal with a difficult time in her life.

E – Explanation – Explain to your reader why the information is relevant to your topic sentence.

– The explanation illustrates to the reader why the information is relevant to the topic sentence.

– The explanation analyzes why the information supports the point.

Example – Joyce’s undying love for her children became her motivation to make it through a challenging time in her life. Looking to others for support and motivation can help people deal with trying times in their lives.

This explanation paraphrases the information and reiterates the point. In addition, it further explains how the information validates the point.

Example of P. I. E. Formed Paragraph

When faced with hardship, people can use the strength of others to make it through a difficult period of time. Joyce Butler from Listening Is an Act of Love used the driving force of her children to help her endure long and hard work hours (67). Joyce’s undying love for her children became her motivation to make it through a challenging time in her life. The motivation of her children helped Joyce stay driven and committed to her labor intensive job. Looking to others for support and motivation can help people deal with hard times in their lives.

New Criminal Justice Leadership

This Portfolio Project is scenario-based. In this scenario, you have
been hired as a consultant by a major metropolitan police department
that has undergone significant leadership/administration changes due to
higher than national average crime rates and poor police-community
relations. In addition, the morale of the police officers is quite low
based on the results of an internal survey and is attributed to poor
management practices, as well as instances of police officer misconduct
not being addressed internally, and several civil lawsuits against
police officers. The new leadership/administration has hired you to
create a presentation.

The presentation should cover the following topics:

  1. An overview of the rights of criminal justice employees;
  2. Law and case law that are relevant to criminal justice employees;
  3. An overview of best practices for reducing crime;
  4. An overview of how using community-oriented policing could improve community relations;
  5. An overview of common ethical/conduct issues that police officers may encounter or become involved in; and,
  6. An overview the areas of civil liability in policing.

Requirements:

  • Your presentation should be 25-30 slides, with around 100 words of associated text or notes accompanying each slide.
  • Integrate concepts, terms, and theories from the readings and module content.
  • You need to cite at least 10 sources for this assignment, outside of
    the textbook. Six of these sources must come from academic journals.
  • Your paper must be formatted according to APA.

Home work

Directions:

You should write about chapter 15 of your novel.

  • Journals are 1-2 pages double spaced.(This one will probably be only 1 since it is such a short section to read)
  • Please make sure you put your name and journal number at the top of your journal entry.
  • What should be in your journal? A journal entry should contain 4 items about each piece of literature you read in the textbook:
  1. A brief synopsis of what the section was about [think characters, conflict, resolution]
  2. Any lines or phrases that have particular significance [think important themes, climactic moments]
  3. A short explanation of what you liked or found most valuable about the piece
  4. Any questions you have about the piece. [Then ask those questions in your group to ensure you understand the piece better]
