discussion week10

Q1. What aspects of Field of Dreams connect to ideas we have encountered before? Select at lest two ideas we have covered previously in this class (such as scapegoat, archetype, heor’s journey, characteristics of a tragic hero, cinematic techniques, sports as a reflection of culture, etc.) and be sure to clearly explain the connection. Choose something beyond the connection to Shoeless Joe, which will not be considered to be an adequate response. As we prepare for the final exam, it’s important to note that there will be a question dealing with this film. Let’s help each other brainstorm in order to understand this film through the ideas of this course.

Q2. This week we are engaged in looking at both past and present – and in this thread, I am asking you to think about the contemporary artist Marina Abramovic – she is one of the most well known performance artists and I will share a few of her performances here. Some students will really appreciate her take on art history issues such as the portrait, the human body, etc – while others are bored, or unimpressed. First, we see her most famous production at the Museum of Modern Art in New York: How does this performance re-imagine the concept of the portrait?

The annual report will often provide insights that can help address some of these questions.

  1. For the corporation that has acquired another company, merged with another company, or been acquired by another company, evaluate the strategy that led to the merger or acquisition to determine whether or not this merger or acquisition was a wise choice. Justify your opinion.
  2. For the corporation that has not been involved in any mergers or acquisitions, identify one (1) company that would be a profitable candidate for the corporation to acquire or merge with and explain why this company would be a profitable target.

The
Mayor of San Diego talks to the San Diego City Council because he wants to
expand the San Diego convention center. The expansion estimated the cost would
be higher than 520 million dollars. He wants to finance the expansion by
raising hotel taxes one to three percent. While getting the expansion off the
ground again, an attorney from a Hotel Development sent a letter to the Mayor,
City and Convention leaders to cease efforts of the increase. The letters cited
recent events including Mayor’s meeting with Port Officials favoring Convention
center expansion over there hotel projects and the City Council Rule Committee.
The expansion would set hotel developers back 13 million dollars on their
investment. The Developers already had an agreement to purchase the leasehold
after the expansion was shut down in 2014. However, the Mayor says after the
lawsuit ends in his favor he is going to take financial steps to secure the
extension by asking San Diego citizens to approve the funding. City officials
want to try to make both projects happen, but it is not financially
possible (Hirsh, 2017).
