Draw
from your lived experiences and connect your writing to your everyday, concrete
realities.  Consider the lens through
which you view the world, the way you feel, see and experience reality. [Provide
at least 2-3 direct quotations from the text under consideration in your
response!!]

1)
Alicia Garza,
Opal Tometi and Patrisse Cullors, founders of the Black Lives Matter Movement
(BLM) have explained that the movement’s inception coincided with the murder of
Trayvon Martin and eventual acquittal of George Zimmerman, who shot and killed
Martin in 2012.  They also trace the movement’s
beginnings back to the murder of Oscar Grant at the Fruitvale BART Station in
2009, the brutal beating of Rodney King by Los Angeles Police in 1991, and
historically to the legacy of violence during American slavery.

First
describe how the movement has been portrayed through mass media outlets.  For instance, what kinds of images and key
words/phrases have been associated with the movement?  Secondly, provide a discussion of the central
issue of police brutality and state violence that initially sparked the
movement.  Consider what role the
militarization of police forces across the nation has played in perpetuating
police brutality?  Additionally, what are
some of the other core issues that the Black Lives Matter Movement seeks to
address?  How do the root causes of
oppression addressed by BLM connect to the issues tackled by the Black Panther
Party during the 1960s?  Do their demands
share similarities?

Lastly, talk
about how you have been exposed to the Black Lives Matter Movement.  In what ways do you feel the movement impacts
your life?

Week 5: Problem Solving Problem solving

Week 5: Problem Solving

Problem solving is a part of daily life, both at home and at work. Daily, individuals are challenged by circumstances and forced to make decisions. Often, no particular strategy is used for problem solving. Consider the multitude of occurrences that force you to problem solve every day (e.g. changing lanes while driving, playing a sport, selecting and completing a research assignment, etc.). Then, think about how you typically solve such problems. What strategies do you use? What do you generally base your decisions on?

This week, you will discuss the relationship between problem solving and critical thinking, creativity, and evaluation. You will learn how your ability to think critically and creatively influences your ability to successfully solve problems. You will learn a systematic approach to problem solving. You will also learn about the importance of evaluating the selected solutions to a problem and explore various factors that influence decision making.

Learning Objectives

Students will:
  • Summarize the importance and purpose of problem solving

Learning Resources

Required Readings

Course Text: Kirby, G., & Goodpaster, J. (2007). Thinking (4th ed.). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson Education, Inc.

  • Chapter 12, “Problem Solving”
  • In this chapter, problem solving and its relationship to critical thinking and creativity is introduced. The focus of the chapter is on those problems that can be solved through action. In that regard, five sequential steps that can be used for solving such a problem are presented.
Focus on the definitions provided throughout the chapter. Review and think about how different problems might require the different tactical approaches discussed throughout the chapter. Think about the barriers that managers often encounter to problem solving, especially in a global business environment. Ask yourself how critical thinking and creativity can assist with problem solving.

  • Chapter 13, “Evaluating”
  • Chapter 13 explores the importance of evaluating an idea before and after its implementation. The many methods of evaluating ideas and the criteria used for evaluation are also discussed. Finally, ideas to help provide a better understanding of why an idea “would/did” or “wouldn’t/didn’t” work are presented.
Focus on the definitions provided throughout the chapter. Review and think about the examples and anecdotes provided in the chapter that illustrate the major ideas being conveyed. Consider how evaluation brings together all aspects of critical thinking. Think about how successful managers use evaluation strategies to improve their performance.

  • Chapter 14, “Decision and Action”
  • In this chapter, you will examine how various factors can affect the decision-making process and the actions that are taken. You will also learn about issues that can impede or cloud the decision-making process.
Focus on the definitions provided throughout the chapter. Review and think about how emotions and other factors can affect decision making. Consider what you know about how a manager’s emotions impact those around him or her. Then, think about how your emotions impact your ability to think creatively and critically.

Discussion: The Essence of Arguments

During this course, you have learned how argument is used to “offer a set of reasons or evidence in support of a conclusion,” (Weston, 2009, p. xi). This is an important concept because “argument” typically has a negative connotation. Being able to support your views with clear and sound reasons is a very important skill in being an effective manager.

This week you reviewed the course text, A Rulebook for Arguments. Based on your reading:

  • Select two of the rules that either you or one of your associates have broken in the past.
  • Illustrate an example of an incorrect and a correct use of each of these two rules.
  • Discuss why the rules are important in formulating strong arguments.

By Day 3

Post a brief statement that summarizes what you have learned from the textbook. Include in your summary how this information will be helpful to you both personally and professionally. Could it be used in problem solving? Why or why not?

Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings.

By Day 5

Respond to two or more of your colleagues’ postings in one or more of the following ways:

  • Ask a probing question.
  • Share an insight from having read your colleague’s posting.
  • Offer and support an opinion.
  • Make a suggestion.
  • Expand on your colleague’s posting.

Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what you learned and the insights you gained as a result of the comments your colleagues made.

Be sure to support your work with specific citations from the Learning Resources and any additional sources.

Caroline Rivera World Health Organization Response

Health has evolved over time becoming comprehensive and patient-informed. The idea of a healthy individual has transitioned from the simple aspect of disease-free to a much more complex and holistic lifestyle choice. The World Health Organization or WHO was formed in response to a growing need for health education. ‘As prevention of illness took center stage, the definition of health evolved into more than being disease-free, and in 1948, the World Health Organization (WHO) was formed. The WHO’s focus was, and continues to be, health promotion for populations worldwide’ (Falkner, 2018). Because of the increase in education and prevention/screening of individuals the bar has been raised in health care delivery. Now there is an active presence of the informed patient that is willing and able to fully participate in their health care. The inclusion of patients in the health care delivery system in itself proves the evolution of the perception of good health today. It is the nurses duty to be the information hub for the patient, so to speak. Helping a patient navigate their health care plan is an example of how nurses advocate and promote wellness on a continuous basis. ‘Nurses must utilize the power of advocacy in order to identify and address patients’ specific needs’ (Falkner,2018). Evidence based practice is considered the gold standard when it comes to patient care and health promotion, it can be defined as using the most up to date and clinically relevant information in providing care the the health care continuum. Although there are standards set in place for disease management it is important the the nurse uses evidence based practice because of the constantly changing needs of the individual patient. Many health care providers know that each patient has specific health concerns and many times their is a balancing act that must be established to achieve a positive patient outcome.

Emotional Disorders,,,

Discussion—Emotional Disorders

Psychological disorders of childhood and adolescence are organized into various categories. One of these categories is emotional disorders. This category includes mood-related, depressive, and anxiety-related disorders.

Using the module readings, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, research emotional disorders.

Click here to download and review four cases related to emotional disorders.

Then, complete the following:

  • Analyze the cases described in the provided document carefully, with a focus on the symptoms demonstrated by each child or adolescent.
  • Select two cases from the list in the document.
  • Identify which emotional disorder is the most likely diagnosis for each case you have selected. The list of possible disorders is below:
    • Major depressive disorder
    • Bipolar disorder
    • Generalized anxiety disorder
    • Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
    • Separation anxiety disorder
    • Panic disorder
  • Do the following to explain your chosen diagnoses:
    • Describe each chosen diagnosis by listing the symptoms and criteria required for that diagnosis and possible causes of that diagnosis.
    • Evaluate how the selected cases illustrate those criteria and why that individual has developed that disorder.

Write your initial response in 350–500 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources, including in-text citations and full references. Incorporate information from at least two academic sources to support your statements or ideas. Academic sources could include your textbook, required readings for this module, academic journal articles found in the AU online library, and the American Psychiatric Association Web site at the following:

By Saturday, July 12, 2014, post your response to the appropriate Discussion Area. Through Wednesday, July 16, 2014, review and comment on at least two peers’ responses. Provide a statement of clarification, a point of view with rationale, challenge a point of discussion, or draw a relationship between one or more points of the discussion. Consider commenting on the following:

  • Explain whether you agree with the peers’ analysis of the cases and recommendations for treatment. Provide reasons in support of your comments.
  • Share additional information learned about the selected diagnosis while conducting the research.
  • Provide interesting resources, Web sites, or references for academic research articles you found during your research. Summarize the researched information for your peers.

Write an investigation paper on Al Qaida

Write a 3-5 page word document

1. Concisely describe and define a problem scenario and/or organization that could be targeted using Open Source (OSINT) intervention.
2. Explain why you selected this particular organization. (NO specific reason make up one)
3. Review historical background and pertinent intelligence issues that relate to the organization.
4. Briefly describe how OSINT is likely to offer an effective solution to the tasked objective of horizon scanning and further open source collection.

Note(s): (1) Due to security and operationally sensitivity issues, it is not advised to select or examine one’s own organization for this assignment, particularly for those students associated with intelligence organizations. It is left to the student’s discretion to consider these security implications when selecting a topic. The following are a few examples of potential subjects that might be developed into a valid project topic:

  • Government Entities (focus on a specific country/region/group).
  • Terrorist Organizations (see an excellent example attached below).
  • Corporate Entities (focus on a specific business/individual).
  • Organized Crime (focus on a specific organization/individual).
  • Counter-narcotics (focus on a specific area, cartel, and/or drug dealer).
  • Government Contractors (focus on a specific business/individual)

(2) When developing the topic and researching the organization, one should consider themselves as being in a position of adequate stature so that the recommendations and observations made in this project paper will be considered. Caution should be given so as not to select an entity or organization that might be too broad in scope (i.e. Chase Bank, or the company formerly known as Blackwater) in order to provide the focused examination required of this project. Include peer-reviewed references that contribute to the substance of the paper, and support the topic thesis.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This is a passive OSINT collection exercise. Do not actively participate or interact in anyway with the organization or individual in order to gain intelligence. For example, do not attempt to join a terrorist organization in order to gain intelligence. Only that which is readily available to you on the internet or in a library should be pursued. Do not join a site, engage directly with, or give your information to any entity in order to produce this project.

Assignment Expectations

As stated in the course and modular outcomes,
you are expected to demonstrate critical thinking and a solid analytical
and theoretical knowledge of all previous courses in the program.

Furthermore, emphasis should be inputted on
applying what you already know to the task of developing an individual
project that reflects synthesis, integration, and real-life application
(action plans).

As the environment is of a real-life project
team, you will be assessed as to how well you present your work to your
company and peers (writing and presentations).

Feedback and comments from your instructor and peers should be implemented and early recommendations adjusted accordingly.

General Background

  1. The Mission Viejo Medical Center (in the city of Mission Viejo, California) comprises two geographically adjacent institutions:
    1. Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center: Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center, and
    2. Children’s Hospital at Mission (CHM): Children’s Hospital at Mission (CHM) http://www.mission4health.com/affiliations/choc-childrens-at-mission.html
  2. The two hospitals serve — within less than a 10-mile radius — the
populations of the following nine municipalities: Aliso Viejo, Ladera
Ranch, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Woods, Lake Forest, Mission
Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, and San Juan Capistrano.
  3. Retirement Communities:
    1. The city of Laguna Woods (http://www.lagunawoodscity.org/), is home to “Leisure World” (http://www.lagunawoodsvillage.com/), a retirement community of over 23,000 senior (55 years and above) residents.
    2. The city of Mission Viejo is home to “Casta Del Sol,” a retirement
community of more than 3,000 senior (55 years and above) residents.
  4. Following the example and success of integrating a special CHOC – children’s hospital within the Mission Viejo Hospital, it is suggested for the purpose of MHA599 only, that an additional new hospital wing be built, catering to the special needs of the senior population, to be named: “Golden Age Hospital (GAH)”.
  5. The “MHA599 Consulting Team (MHA599CT)” has been tasked to research and develop a project feasibility plan for the future GAH.

The Project

  1. Note: You do not need to be a physician or health care provider to complete this assignment. Address it through management lenses.
  2. As independent members of MHA599CT, you will each undertake this
task and prepare said plan, following the modular guidelines and
    assignments.
  3. Each module will focus on different topics, building on your
previous studies and based on the background materials of the courses
taken in both the MBA and MSHA disciplines.
  4. The assignments for each module will be prepared and presented to the MHA599CT management (your course instructor) as follows:
    1. Case – developing and writing a segment of the plan.
    2. SLP – preparing a boardroom PowerPoint Presentation (PPT) based on the case paper.
    3. Discussion – preparing an executive summary based on the case paper,
to be posted on the TD platform. Members of the Team (all students)
will comment on their peers’ postings and be able to share information
and data for their own plan (see guidelines in the TD platform).
  5. The Case Assignments are the crux of the coursework, whereas the SLP
and TD are its derivatives. Case papers should be at least 4-5 content
    pages long.
  6. You will prepare and submit the sectional/modular case papers for each module, adding
the preceding ones as you go (like chapters in a book); that is, in
Module 2 you will combine and submit Case 1 and Case 2, and so on.
  7. You will make amends to each case paper per the feedback you will get from your instructor.
  8. Finally, at the end of the course, you will need to aggregate all chapters into one comprehensive paper, as follows:
    1. Title page – to be submitted in Module 1.
    2. Background – to be submitted in Module 1.
    3. Market Research and Segmentation – to be submitted in Module 1.
    4. Organizational Structures and Functions – to be submitted in Module 2.
    5. Finance and Budgeting – to be submitted in Module 3.
    6. Quality, Ethical, and IT Controls – to be submitted in Module 4.
    7. Conclusions and Recommendations – to be submitted in and for all modules.

Module 1 – Assignment – Market Research and Segmentation

  1. The External Environment – Data Gathering
    1. Search the Web and gather relevant general information regarding
hospitals for seniors and direct data pertaining to the external
      environment of the proposed GAH
    2. The proposed points below are just “starter points” for you to expound upon and add to as you see fit.
    3. Common medical conditions of seniors:
      1. Overall health status
      2. Unique illnesses
      3. Other
    4. Medical institutions for seniors:
      1. Types of institutions and clinics serving seniors (their size per population served)
      2. Types of special services provided for seniors and catering to their needs.
      3. Length-of-stay of seniors at various hospitals.
      4. Other
    5. Local (Mission Viejo area) City demographics:
      1. Can be obtained from but not limited to: http://www.city-data.com/
      2. Input the nine municipalities (one by one) in the search box.
      3. Scroll through the various data sets, and glean the relevant
information: Population, Gender, Age, Household income, Race, Other.
      4. Consolidate all nine city data sets into one table, total where appropriate
  2. Based on the data gathered and the general picture you have
obtained, we will now focus on direct market research and segmentation
of the senior community in the Mission Viejo area.
  3. In order to do so, you will need to define/address the following points:
    1. Who are your target market subjects?
    2. Where are they located?
    3. What special needs do they require?
    4. What special medical/health services do they wish to get?
    5. What type of physician specialization would they like to have?
    6. Locations: Do they prefer a single medical center (MC) hospital
location, or do they prefer a medical center (MC) hospital and a
      community clinic (CC)?
    7. Other.
  4. Survey Questionnaire:
    1. Complete the following proposed survey table – column A, that you
plan to use in order to obtain the preferences and perceptions of the
seniors of your target segment, assume n=500. (Click the link to access
      the GAH Project tables.)
    2. Your instructor will comment on your table and fill out column B
(the average response score of the 500 subjects) in his feedback to you,
on the basis of which you will be able to further develop your project
      plan.

Module 2 – Assignment – Organizational Structures and Functions

  1. Based on the data gathered, the general picture you have obtained,
and the results of the survey (as returned to you by your instructor),
you will now focus on the organizational structure and functions for the
    proposed GAH and Community Clinic.
  2. In order to do so, you will need to define/address the following points:
    1. Define the mission statement for the GAH and Community Clinic.
    2. Prepare a simple organizational diagram, depicting the
organizational structure (blocks) of the existing Mission Hospital
(MVH), Children’s Hospital (CHOC), and the proposed Golden Age Hospital
(GAH), and the community clinic (CC)

      1. Note what common services or functions they can
share (e.g., blood bank and laboratory services, shared operating rooms,
        pharmacy, etc.)
      2. Explain the organizational relationships between the structure blocks.
    3. What is the recommended hospital size (number of beds)?
    4. What major services/treatments will be offered based on your survey results at the GAH and the CC? At least six detailed services/treatments are required.
    5. Physician–Hospital integration:
      1. How (if appropriate) will you integrate the services of physicians whose specialty is in geriatric treatment within the GAH /CC?
      2. Address the management aspects, not the clinical ones.
      3. You can choose and explain one of the organizational forms detailed
        in the following article: Cuellara, A. E. & Gertlerb, P.J. (2006).
Strategic integration of hospitals and physicians. Journal of Health
        Economics. Volume 25, Issue 1, January 2006, Pages 1-28. http://faculty.haas.berkeley.edu/gertler/working_papers/hospital_vi_5_10_02.pdf
  3. Conclusions and Recommendations.

Module 3 – Assignment – Finance and Budgeting

  1. Based on your proposed organization and structure for the GAH and
the Community Clinic, we will now focus on financing and budgeting
    issues.
  2. In order to do so, we will need to define the following requirements and assumptions:
    1. Cost of facility construction, initial medical equipment, and
instrumentation, will not be calculated – as they will be fully paid by
      the state as a grant.
    2. All senior patients will be above the age of 65, and will have only
the Federal Medicare health insurance. Research the major constructs of
Medicare health coverage as defined by the “Medicare Prospective Payment System.”
    3. The hospital and clinic will be financially balanced, that is, income from Medicare payments will cover in full all operating costs.
  3. “Medicare Prospective Payment System”
    1. The hospital is reimbursed by the government per procedure and/or treatment by a predefined sum and not by the actual expenses performed for and on a particular patient.
    2. For example – a patient requiring open heart surgery will utilize
the services of physicians, nurses, OR, laboratory, pharmacy, and
occupies a hospital bed on average for six days. If a certain patient is
discharged after four days, the hospital will still be paid the six-day
amount. Hence, the incentive to operate efficiently and effectively,
enabling the hospital to “save money.”
  4. Based on the services you have decided to provide – at least six, complete the table (GAH Project):
    1. Input services/treatments in column A.
    2. Input estimated and rounded Medicare reimbursement to GAH (in
thousands of dollars) for each treatment in column B (assign for each a
      figure between $10,000 to $60,000).
    3. Your instructor has inputted the projected number of procedures/treatments performed annually at GAH in column C.
    4. Calculate the total income for GAH by multiplying columns B*C in column D.
    5. Your instructor has inputted the GAH Projected Performance percentage, relative to the Federal standard (100%) in column E.
    6. Calculate the total GAH gain or loss by D-(D*E) in column F.
  5. Assume a $250,000 annual miscellaneous expense.
  6. Prepare (based on the table), a forecast of profit or loss for GAH for the first year of operation.
  7. Conclusions and Recommendations.
  8. Your instructor will comment on your table in his feedback to you,
on the basis of which you will be able to further develop your project
    plan.

Module 4 – Assignment – Quality, Ethical, and IT Controls

  1. Based on your proposed organization and structure for the GAH and
the Community Clinic, we will now focus on additional aspects pertaining
    to:
  2. Quality control and Accreditation:
    1. Define at least five core organizational competencies and functions
for the new organization, and define a goal/objective for them.
    2. Propose a control method/score board to be implemented in the new
organization to ensure that said core competencies and functions are
      meeting their goals and objectives.
    3. Assume that the new Hospital will seek JCAHO accreditation. What major competencies will this require from management and staff?
  3. Ethical Issues – HIPAA
    1. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996
(HIPAA, Title II) required the Department of Health and Human Services
(HHS) to establish national standards for electronic health care
transactions and national identifiers for providers, health plans, and
employers. It also addressed the security and privacy of health data. As
the industry adopts these standards for the efficiency and
effectiveness of the nation’s healthcare system, the use of electronic
      data interchange will improve.
    2. Review http://www.cms.hhs.gov/HIPAAGenInfo/
  4. IT Systems
    1. Based on your proposed project’s organizational structure and the
geographical locations of Mission Hospital, Golden Age Hospital and the
Community Clinic, recommend the major components of an IT system that
can best provide for the communication needs within and between the
      organization units.
    2. Identify and define your requirements from the system subject to the ethical requirements of HIPAA (see above).
  5. Conclusions and Recommendations – Final for complete project.
  6. Final paper
    1. Combine all chapters of the project paper as you have developed them over the past modules into one comprehensive paper.
    2. Note: If you need any clarification on the assignment, communicate with your instructor at any time throughout the modules.

Good Luck!

Recruitment and Hiring Practices

Case Study Analysis: Recruitment and Hiring Practices

This case study analysis assesses the following outcomes:

MT203-2: Examine the recruitment and selection process.

PC-4.3: Apply concepts of multiculturalism and diversity to become an agent of change.

You have read about recruiting and selection processes used in various companies as well as practiced with some of those concepts. Now you will apply your understanding of these concepts to a case scenario and then address the checklist items.

To assist you with this and other case studies in this class, a document entitled “Case Study Analysis,” is in Course Documents and can be downloaded for your reference. This document, and many other invaluable writing resources, can also be found at the Writing Center.

Case Scenario:

A Silicon Valley recruiting firm recruits artificial intelligence (AI) and technology personnel. The recruits workplace could be located anywhere the company operates, depending on their skills and expertise, although the tendency is to hire in-country nationals in each respective country. The company uses technology-oriented magazines, the company website, and social media to recruit the candidates they need for their clients. They started up about a year ago and went from 3 recruiters to 50 overnight. Their recruiters are hired for their charm, communication skills, and industry expertise, however most of the recruiters graduated from Ivy League colleges in the U.S. and most are white males. Lately recruiting numbers have been slowing down drastically while general demand in the marketplace by employers for AI and technology personnel for the coming year is up 300%.

The current recruiting practice involves hiring people via their website recruitment area. The potential candidate merely attaches their resume and includes a short note to the recruiter. These resumes are then screened using a data mining program looking for certain criteria and terminology in their resumes. Once screened, those candidates getting through the initial screening are then auto-contacted by email to tell them they need to complete the question/quiz accessed on the website using a particular password. If they pass this second screening they are given an individual interview via the company’s online conference room. Once completed, the final candidates are finally sent to the potential employer for the final interview and selection.

Now however, the president is getting complaints from the EEO Commission and the Technology firms that they need to be hiring a more diverse workforce and that there are no ADA candidates, and the number of minorities and women is almost nil. He is now worried about losing clients and potential lawsuits as a result of their recruiting and selection processes. The company needs to address a diverse client base. Their clients are Northern European, African American, Indian, and Hispanic.

Checklist: As the HR specialist of the company, you are tasked with overhauling the selection and hiring process to address the following:

  • Identify problems with the potential candidate characteristics.
  • Analyze the company’s recruitment and selection process and problems.
  • What multicultural and diversity planning concepts would you apply at the company to make a positive change?
  • Describe how you would make that positive change happen.

Requirements:

  1. Complete a 2–3 page paper (not including the title and reference pages).
  2. Answer each checklist question thoroughly.
  3. Demonstrate your understanding of the information presented in the weekly reading assignments by defining terms, explaining concepts, and providing detailed examples to illustrate your points.
  4. Include at least two references from your reading assignments, or other academic sources, to reinforce and support your own thoughts, ideas, and statements using APA citation style. You can access help with APA by going to Course Resources and accessing the “APA Style Central” resources in Academic Tools.
