 Leadership and Communication

This assignment will not only help you improve your leadership and communication skills, it will also establish the foundation for other courses you take at CSU-Global.
For this assignment, research the topic of leadership and communication.   Make sure you address the following questions:

1. What communication strategies are associated with effective leadership?
2. What are some barriers to effective communication that a leader should overcome?

Be sure to evaluate the sources you find via the library or open web for credibility.  To make this assignment more meaningful for you, base it on your job or other life experience (perhaps as a volunteer for an organization or as a student at a university) as much as possible. 

Your assignment will be 3-4 pages, in addition to the title and reference pages.  Include all elements listed below in your paper. View the sample paper – Does your paper look like this? to see how these elements should appear. Keep in mind that this assignment structure reflects that of most Critical Thinking assignments at CSU-Global.

Title Page 
You can use the APA Template Word document, which is already formatted in APA style. Just replace the informational placeholders with your information. Write directly into this template and save it as your own paper.

Introduction 
This section is where you include your thesis statement. Follow the instructions on Writing an Effective Essay (one of your required readings this week). Again, tie your paper to an issue at your job or in your life that addresses leadership and communication. Use Page I of this module, Leadership and Communication, to help you. Ask yourself two important questions: Who is the audience and what is the message?

Body of the Paper 
In this section, answer the two questions:

1. What communication strategies are associated with effective leadership?
2. What are some barriers to effective communication that a leader should overcome?

If you use sources from the library or open web, be sure to include in-text citations.

Conclusion
In this section,

1. Restate thesis
2. Summarize main body points
3. Return to the hook to bring the essay full-circle

Before you can write this paper, you have to read the attached documents below about Gen 13-14 (Reading course back by Wes Howard Brook, Gen 13-14 from the Bible and the additional reading.

3-4 double spaced pages, using at least SEVEN of the ten tools below.

Elements of text engagement papers:

1. *Compare translations. What words are so different across translations that it is essential to know the original Hebrew and/or Greek word?
2. Cultural context. What elements in the story (e.g., scene, characterization, what people say or do) seem unclear to you, where knowing cultural context would shed light? Be aware of two different, but often overlapping cultural contexts: a) that within the story world (sometime in the early 2ndmillennium BCE) and that of the author(s)’ time (during the Babylonian Exile).
3. *Narrative context. Where does this particular piece of narrative fit within a) the immediate section of Genesis (i.e., Primeval History, Abraham/Sarah cycle, Jacob cycle, Joseph story) and b) within the larger context of Genesis?
4. Structure of the section. Does the passage have a particular internal structure that helps to reveal its meaning (e.g., chiasm, inclusion, other forms of repetition)?
5. Intratextual echoing and foreshadowing: Does this passage either recall or anticipate other passages a) in how it is structured (e.g., the three “wife-sister” stories); b) what is assumes or anticipates as knowledge about characters, including God, places or situations; c) that reveal how plot conveys meaning?
6. *Details within the passage. What do you notice about how 1) the characters are portrayed; 2) characters engage with each other, including with God; 3) setting (including place, time of day, season of year) shapes the story; surprise, twists or other plot elements generate a response in either the characters or you as a reader?
7. Anything else. What else do you notice and have questions about that might not fall into one of the categories above?
8. Effect on your own presuppositions. How does the unfolding meaning challenge you to reconsider your own presuppositions about God, God’s purposes and/or the meaning of human life? What about who you are as a reader (i.e., the elements within the “circle” of you as a reader) are you challenged to rethink?
9. *Insights from the general readings. What do the interpreters whose writing is assigned for this passage have to say that shapes your understanding?
10. *Insights from your chosen, additional reading.

To ensure you include the appropriate elements in your argument paper, you must organize all of your research. This assignment will help you to determine what pieces of research you would like to include in your paper, and which claims and statements the selected research will support. The outline you create will be used as the basis for the Week 5 Final Argument Paper assignment. Follow these step-by-step instructions as they are presented, to guide you through the assignment.

Part 1: Research and Evaluation

Conduct a search in the University Library for three peer-reviewed journal articles that relate to your topic and the reasons you hold your position about that topic, which you outlined in your Week 1 Topic Selection Worksheet.

Review the articles you selected, and highlight information that supports your reasons for your position.

• If the articles you initially select do not support your position, continue to research until you find content that does.

Evaluate each article you intend to use with the Evaluating Resources Worksheet in the Center for Writing Excellence. Your sources should meet the evaluation criteria listed to ensure they are appropriate for your paper. You will use the information from this evaluation in Part 2 of this assignment, but you will not submit this evaluation document.

Part 2: Thesis Statement and Outline

Create an outline of your argument paper using the Argument Paper Outline Template.

Complete the following areas of the Argument Paper Outline Template. Replace the template text with your information.

• Title page
• On page 2: Title of Paper
• Revised thesis statement
  • Review the draft of your thesis statement from your Week 1 Topic Selection Worksheet, and make any necessary revisions to form a clear claim for your argument. Use your faculty feedback and the Writing a Thesis Statement Tutorial for tips on revising your thesis statement.
• APA-formatted level 1 headings for each of the reasons for your position
• Topic sentence
  • Topic sentences will begin each body paragraph about the particular topic. The topic sentence should focus on one of the reasons for your position.
• Main points you want to present about each reason for your position
  • Each main point should represent an additional detail in the discussion of each reason for your position.
• Supporting research for each main point, including the Information source from which the supporting research was retrieved
• Reference page with an APA formatted reference for each of the peer-reviewed sources used
  • Ensure your Reference page lists the sources in alphabetical order. You may use the Reference and Citation Generator, found in the Center for Writing Excellence, to help generate your references.
  • Below each reference, include a 25- to 50-word justification for why the source is appropriate for use in this paper. Each justification should be based on the evaluation you completed in Part 1 of this assignment.

You do not need to include the introduction and conclusion paragraphs this week, as you will be working on those next week.
