Why Should African American History be taught?

A new movement has started since the early 2000s, where some political groups are trying to remove American history from our children’s school curriculum and textbooks, specifically slave history. However, these groups also do not want to cover segregation or civil rights. By removing the history that we have just covered in these last eight weeks, the African American communities are denied their connections to American History. Recently, African Americans have created movements such as “Black Lives Matter” to counteract these other groups. Many tie slave history to the development of segregation and racism that has spread throughout our country. A Historical Trauma has affected generations of African Americans because of what their ancestors had to endure just to survive in this country. This distrust has developed towards different groups, agencies, and organizations. For those who are not affected, trying to understand what it means to be an African American in the United States showcases the need for this history to be taught in all schools and to every American.

Your final forum is to prepare a speech that would explain to all of America why African American History from after Reconstruction to the present should be taught.

Explain why every American should know African American history. You will be expected to use specific facts, events and people.

In your speech, demonstrate the breadth of knowledge you have gained from this work.

This post must be at least 500 words.

Personal Behavior Change Plan

Final Project: Personal Behavior Change Plan

For your Final Project, you are to develop a personal behavioral change plan. After completing the assessments throughout the course, you should have a good idea of your wellness strengths and your weaknesses. Choose one dimension that you would like to change. Discuss each of the following areas in your plan presentation:

  1. Identify the wellness dimension you want to improve. Explain why you chose this dimension. In your response, describe your previous assessments and examine at least three lifestyle factors (diet, exercise, substance use, etc.) responsible for low assessment results in the dimension of wellness you chose to improve.
  2. Compare your current behaviors to the ideal behaviors for each of the lifestyle factors that you identified. For example, if you selected stress as a lifestyle factor that contributes to your low assessment of emotional wellness, then compare your current stress-related behaviors (fighting with family, eating sweets, watching TV, drinking alcohol, etc.) to ideal stress management behaviors (appropriate conflict-resolution, meditation, daily exercise, massage, deep breathing, etc.). Select a minimum of one current behavior and one ideal behavior for each of the three lifestyle factors that you identified.
  3. Describe the health risks and diseases associated with your current behaviors. Explain how your current behaviors would lead to these negative consequences if left unchanged.
  4. Review the transtheoretical model of behavior change in Chapter 1 of your course textbook. Explain this model and discuss your readiness to change. Include which stage of change you are in currently and why you feel this way.
  5. Imagine that you were ready to plan for change, and identify three behaviors you could adopt to decrease your health risk and improve your specified dimension of wellness. Use the previous information to help with your selection.
  6. Refer to the development of SMART goals in your text and develop three of your own SMART goals. Be sure to include all the parts of a SMART goal (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Trackable) for each goal set. As you discuss these in your assignment, explain your objectives and why you chose these goals.
  7. Review the supplemental material on the social cognitive theory, theory of planned behavior, health belief model, and transtheoretical model. Using these theories and models, discuss how each one may be able to predict your success in making this change. In your reply, explain the use of models and theories in health and wellness.
  8. Describe three barriers (one barrier per behavior change) that may prevent you in making these changes.
  9. Discuss one way to overcome each of your barriers.
  10. Explain three motivational techniques that will help you maintain your plan.
  11. Finally, develop a wellness philosophy based on your own values and beliefs and from what you have learned in this class.

Create a PowerPoint presentation with a minimum of ten slides (excluding title and reference slides). Within the presentation, include detailed speaker notes for each slide. Your behavioral change plan should use a minimum of six scholarly sources, cited in APA format

Writing the Final Project

Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.

What-is-a-Case-Study-

What is a Case Study?

“A case study is a narrative used to help you practice real-life analysis and communication skills. It is a learning tool that provides readers with “enough detail…to understand the nature and scope of the problem, and…serve as a springboard for discussion and learning” (O’Rourke, 2007, p. 391).

Use your textbook and academic resources from the Kaplan Library to support your responses.

Access the Kaplan Library directly from Course Resources for this class, or through the student portal. Be sure to cite and reference all your sources. The Kaplan Library has a feature that allows you to automatically create an APA formatted reference.

Your completed case study should be between 750–1000 words, and all sources must be properly cited using APA format.

    2. Is this receptor neuron, an afferent or efferent neuron?
    3. Explain where the information from the receptor neuron is sent and how does it result in Amy moving her finger away from the stove.
    4. How many neurons are typically involved in this response? What are the names of these neurons?
    5. Evolutionarily, why do you think the human body has this system in place?
    6. What might happen if we did not have this response?
  2. Glen, who is 45 years old, begins to notice that his hands shake (tremors) when he is performing everyday tasks such as signing his signature. His family members have noticed that he also has muffled speech and tends to shuffle when he walks. He is diagnosed with Early Onset Parkinson’s disease.
    1. What is Early Onset Parkinson’s disease?
    2. What specific cell type is affected in Parkinson’s disease?
    3. What is dopamine? What effects does dopamine have on the body?
    4. Explain the structure of a synapse and why Glen’s neurologist would prescribe him a dopamine agonist?
    5. Glen has genetic testing performed and it is determined that he does carry an autosomal dominant mutation in the SNCA gene associated with Early Onset Parkinson’s disease. Glen has three children. Would you advise his children to have genetic testing performed to determine if they also carry the disease mutation? Why or why not?
  3. Patricia, who is 37 years old, discusses with her physician recent symptoms that she has experienced including blurred vision, numbness in her fingers and face, dizziness, fatigue and weakness. Examine your daily routine and determine the CO2 that you generate as a result.

Overview

Most current energy needs are met through the burning of fossil fuels that produce CO2 in the process. The use of fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, and petroleum) is so ubiquitous we do not even think about it. The food we eat is farmed by tractors, harvested by combines, and then transported by trucks. Our electricity is generated predominately from burning coal or natural gas. In every facet of our lives, we utilize fossil fuels, or others do on our behalf, to produce the goods we purchase. The “carbon footprint” (i.e., the amount of CO2 emitted in tons per year) for the average American is more than 20 tons! For the Research Paper, you will examine your daily routine and determine the CO2 that you generate as a result.

Requirements

Write the paper in executive summary format:

  • APA format.
  • ~700 words (not counting bibliography or appendix; add tables and figures as an appendix).
  • Double-spaced, 12-point font, one-inch margins.

Be succinct! Brevity is important, but completeness of your analysis is not excused by the word requirement.

Cite facts. Do not simply offer unsupported opinion. Indicate how you know the CO2 levels for the sources producing it in your life. Cite sources of this information in the text, and include each reference in the bibliography.

Do not plagiarize. Use your own words. Do not quote directly. Summarize the source in your own words.

Ideas are the most important. You will be graded on how well you defend your carbon footprint estimate. How complete an analysis do you present? It is not important that you do or do not generate much CO2 for this assignment; however, if you do not, you must explain how you are avoiding doing so. Be sure to give all specifics for your calculations.

You must include a bibliography. On a separate page following your narrative, list your sources in APA style in the order cited in your paper. Papers without a bibliography will not be accepted (and are plagiarism, anyway).

Use the best sources. Peer-reviewed sources provide the best information. Books must be approved by publishers, magazine and newspaper articles are reviewed by editors, and scientific journal articles are reviewed by panels of scientists before the article in question is printed. Be aware that this is not true of the Internet!

Submit the paper to the Dropbox no later than Module 7 Sunday 11:59 PM EST/EDT. (This Dropbox basket is linked to Turnitin.)

Grading

The paper will be graded based on the rubric on the following:
