Module Projects

Module Projects- The purpose of each project is to provide you with experience in demonstrating knowledge of how the industry works and capacity for knowing how to handle an assignment when you are in your working career. For each assignment your objective is to complete the following three sections:

  1. Report: In this section of your work provide your answer to the project assignment. If it is to select a trip then describe the trip you selected. If it is create a resume then put the resume in this section.
  2. Process: Show your thinking about the steps you took to complete the assignment. For instance what steps did you take to prepare your answer? What sources did you use and how did you arrive at your decision?
  3. Evaluation: Evaluate what you learned and what you will improve on the next time you have an assignment like this one. There could be personal statements starting with I learned, I surprised myself or next time I will definitely.

Module 4-Prepare a cover letter and resume for Marriott. Presenting yourself for a job may certainly apply to each of you. The resume is your story and crafting one that is true, compelling, interesting can contribute greatly to your future success. Marriott does an excellent job of coaching you on what they are seeking. You are to review their careers site, select a job and prepare a cover letter and resume as if you are making an application. The resume and cover letter need to be tailored to the Marriot job. In your cover letter you should outline your skills which you then confirm in your resume experiences. Check you cover letter to assure that each sentence does not begin with “I.” The hiring person is seeking what you can do for them and not what there to fulfill your personal desires. Also many companies may use an optical reader looking for keywords as their sorting technique. What keywords are in the job description and how did you incorporate them into your cover letter and resume? This is a great skill to learn in writing the letter and will help your cover letter and resume rise up in the search process.

Your 4 page will have three parts-

1.What you determined to be your answer- the cover letter and resume properly formatted.

2. How you went about your work. Why did you chose this particular job. In this section also add the keywords of the job description and how you used them in your cover letter and resume.

3. What you would improve next time you have such an assignment.

Dealing With Diversity in America from Reconstruction Through the 1920s

After the Civil War, the United States had to recover from war, handle western expansion, and grapple with very new economic forms. However, its greatest issues would revolve around the legacies of slavery and increasing diversity in the decades after the Civil War. Reconstruction was partly a period of military occupation of the south by the northern victors. Former slaves now had freedom and new opportunities but faced old prejudices and rapidly forming new barriers. Immigrants from Europe and Asia came in large numbers but then faced political and social restrictions. Women continued to seek rights. Yet, on the whole, America became increasingly diverse by the 1920s. Consider developments, policies, and laws in that period from 1865 to the 1920s. Take one of the positions as suggested below, draw from the sources listed, and present a paper with specific examples and arguments to demonstrate the validity of your position.

Possible position—in each case you can take the pro or con position:

  1. The Lost Cause narrative of the South effectively sabotaged and influenced racial policy in the US for most of the post-Civil War period. (or you can take the position that it did not)
  2. Political policies in the decades after the Civil War generally promoted diversity and “the melting pot” despite the strong prejudices of a few. (or you can take the position that political policies did not)
  3. Reform movements between 1865 and 1930, like the Progressives and the agrarian populists, generally led the way to increased democracy. (or you can take the position that these movements did not)

After giving general consideration to your readings so far and any general research, select one of the positions above as your position—your thesis. (Sometimes after doing more thorough research, you might choose the reverse position. This happens with critical thinking and inquiry. Your final paper might end up taking a different position than you originally envisioned.). Organize your paper as follows, handling these issues:

  • The position you choose (from the list above)—or something close to it—will be the thesis statement in your opening paragraph.
  • To support your position, use three specific examples from different decades between 1865 and 1930. You may narrowly focus on race or gender or immigrant status, or you may use examples relevant to all categories.
  • Explain why the opposing view is weak in comparison to yours.
  • Consider your life today: In what way does the history you have shown shape or impact issues in your workplace or desired profession?

Length:
The paper should be 500-to-750 words in length. This normally means 3-to-4 pages for the body of the paper. (The title page and References page do not count in these calculations.) Double-space between lines. Format instructions are below.

Top

Research and References:
You must use a MINIMUM of three sources; the Schultz textbook must be one of them. Your other two sources should be drawn from the list provided below. This is guided research, not open-ended Googling. You will have an alphabetized list of Reference entries at the end, using APA format. You will have short, APA-style in-text citations appropriately placed in the body of the paper; these in-text citations will match the References listed at the end. Except as your instructor might direct, don’t use other sources for your paper than those listed here. (Of course, for “starter research” you can read many sources.)

Case 9: Concussions and the National Football League

Playing professional football, almost by definition, is not one of the world’s safer jobs, especially at the level of the NFL, where players get injured almost every week of play. Sprained ankles, torn ligaments, concussions, and broken bones are regular game occurrences.

Over the past few decades, however, retired NFL players and others have registered concerns about how repetitive head injuries/concussions sustained while playing have impacted them later in life. Evidence has begun to mount that many retired NFL players face considerable neurological problems, including permanent brain damage, dementia, and much higher-thanaverage incidence of Alzheimer’s disease and clinical depression. Some NFL players may have even committed suicide due to degenerative brain disease.

During 2011 and 2012 various retired NFL players brought lawsuits against the NFL with respect to this issue. The players argued that the league knew or should have known the risks to players due to concussions/traumatic repetitive brain injuries suffered during the NFL games and that it did not do enough to prevent these injuries. In August 2013 the NFL agreed to settle these lawsuits by paying a total of $765 million to retired NFL players who have suffered injuries. Retired players suffering from Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s diseases will receive as much as $3 million apiece, while those suffering from Lou Gehrig’s disease/ALS will receive up to $5 million. All retired NFL players will be eligible for paid neurological medical monitoring and baseline testing, with $75 million allocated to pay for this. Moreover, the NFL will also give $10 million to fund brain injury research and various education/safety programs.

Is this settlement fair? Certainly the $765 million number is significant, with retired players potentially receiving significant individual compensation. Also, the funds for future research could be very meaningful. Furthermore, the settlement avoided potentially years of costly litigation, with likely little remedy of the situation while the litigation was ongoing. That said, many feel that the NFL “got off cheap” with respect to the settlement deal. In 1 year, the NFL’s total revenues amount to about $9.5 billion, and observers expect that to more than double to about $25 billion by 2025. Under the settlement agreement, the NFL must pay half of the $765 million over the next 3 years but then has another 17 years to pay off the remaining sum. Clearly, the league’s future revenue stream should be able to support these payments.

In addition, concern remains that the agreement does not really get at the more systemic issue of making the game safer. Critics feel changes will have to start at the youth, high school, and college levels—levels of football play that involve many more individuals than the 4,800 former NFL players involved in given lawsuits. Some also feel that the $765 million payment will lead folks to overlook ongoing safety concerns that continue to exist.

Not all individuals or even NFL players feel this way, however. Some observers note that “football is football,” and those playing it at all levels in a sense accept the inherent dangers involved in the game. NFL players are very well paid professionals, with many making millions of dollars per year. Seattle Seahawks star cornerback Richard Sherman, for example, has strongly pointed out that NFL players have chosen their profession, and thus feels that these types of concerns are to some extent overblown. Sherman says that current NFL players are aware of the risks and have decided to play anyway. He notes that football is a violent way to make a living, but that it is part of what is great about the game and shouldn’t be watered down.

On the other hand, quarterback Brett Favre states he has experienced memory loss, including not remembering his daughter playing youth soccer during one summer. This worries him; he believes concussions have had a negative impact on his life and fears he might develop a brain disease experienced by many other athletes who have experienced hits to the head (Belson, 2013; Brinson, 2013; Chase, 2013; Blecher, 2016; Waldron, 2013; Sherman, 2013; Wilson & Smith, 2013).

  1. To what extent should there be something of a caveat emptor/buyer beware mentality when someone chooses to play football in the NFL?
  2. Can the NFL ever really make professional football totally safe?
  3. Is playing in the NFL different from being a NASCAR driver, a police officer, or an astronaut? If so, how? If not, why not?

Dissertation Presentation Requirements:

Only the main text is included in the word count: the following are NOT included; Title Page, Abstract, Table of Contents, Lists of Tables/Figures, Glossary, List of Abbreviations, Acknowledgements, Reference list and Appendices. Please note the following:

– Use 1.5-line spacing with a double space between paragraphs.

– Start each Chapter on a new page.

– Margins for the text should be justified with left and right margins of around 1.8 cm.

– Be consistent with font type and sizing.

– The required font is Arial font size 11 or Calibri, font size 12 for the main body.

Bigger fonts are acceptable for headings/sub-headings.

Please note: if you use Microsoft Word and the headings/automatic Table of Contents function, or a thesis template, Word will automatically type and size the fonts of the different

headings/sub-headings – this is acceptable.

– When writing in the text, do not use numerals if less than ten: otherwise for ten and more, use numerals e.g. “The results showed that four patients reported…….” Or “The results showed that 26 people reported……”. This differs when presenting statistics/percentages etc. (see point below)

Do not begin sentences with a numeral.

Do not begin sentences with an abbreviation

Use conventions like > (greater than) and < (less than) where appropriate e.g ………“A p value of <0.05 was considered significant” – note it is acceptable to use numerals here.

Check that all references in the text appear in the reference list and are fully and accurately recorded.

For the Introduction Portion:

This section introduces the thesis and the work to come. You may use a more informal style of writing for this section and write in the first person, e.g., use the term “I” instead of “the author”. You should also;

– Outline the reasons for the choice of topic which may be personal (you have a particular interest in the subject) or professional (the topic is increasingly important in health care) or a

combination of both.

– Describe the scope of the thesis, i.e. the format of the research proposal.

– Describe your search strategy, key words employed, databases searched and the results of the searches. There is no set numbers of studies you should include in your review, but the

allotted word count normally allows for critique of between 5 and 10 studies in the required detail

– Finish with an overall recommendation from the review that leads to a question to guide either the research proposal.

The Introduction should not involve a lot of discussion about the topic itself: it is an Introduction to the dissertation itself not the subject matter. So, using the example of ‘dementia’ again, you should not include a lot of information about what dementia is, different types, signs and symptoms, how it affects the brain, prognosis and so on. You might, of course, discuss these in the main body depending on your thesis type, but the Introduction should only provide enough information to set the scene for the thesis.

Please bid only if you are very confident in producing good quality work
