Topic 6 Assignment: Principles of Ethics

In a 250-350 word essay, summarize the two main principles of ethics discussed in the text. Explain the composition and role of an ethics committee.

Chapter 7 Reader Questions: “The Pleasures of Eating”

1. Identify the author’s claim. Where does he state it in his essay? From your experience, do you agree with him? Do you agree that the “industrial eater is, in fact, one who does not know that eating is an agricultural act, who no longer knows or imagines the connections between eating and the land and who is therefore necessarily passive and uncritical – in short, a victim”?
2. On what grounds does the author base his claim? Find specific evidence he presents to support his claim. Do you find it convincing and supportive?
3. Do you agree with the author’s idea of the “pleasure of eating”?
4. The author has several warrants, some of them stated explicitly and some implied. In paragraph 7, he states: “There is, then, a politics of food that, like any politics, involves our freedom. We still (sometimes) remember that we cannot be free if our minds and voices are controlled by someone else. But we have neglected to understand that we cannot be free if our food and its sources are controlled by someone else. The condition of the passive consumer of food is not a democratic condition. One reason to eat responsibly is to live free.” Do you agree with his warrant? On what commonly shared values or beliefs does he base his warrant? Are there any aspects of his warrant with which you disagree? What backing does the author provide to support his warrant? Is it sufficient?
5. In the paragraph that proceeds, in paragraph 8, Berry evaluates “industrial eating”. Does he include any qualifiers? What limitations do his qualifying statements put on his argument? Does this limitation weaken his argument at all?
6. Does the author acknowledge and address anticipated rebuttals to his argument? Can you locate any in his essay? What rebuttals can you make in response to his argument?
7. If you identify with being an “industrial eater”, write about the experience as it may affect your moral, perhaps even emotional, outlook. How does it impact your idea of health and freedom? Answer the same question if you are a conscious eater, considering in your response how your health may be different if you were uninformed of your food choices.
