Case Study 2: I Pledge Allegiance to the Flag

Religion and Politics have traditionally been highly debated topics in our society. Recently, the Pledge of Allegiance has added to this debate.

American citizens have generally recited the Pledge of Allegiance at important ceremonies ranging from presidential inaugurations to the beginning of the school day. The pledge has a great deal of sentimental value to many Americans, but also creates a great deal of controversy for others.

Review the Supreme Court case Elk Grove Unified School District v. Newdow, which highlights the debate.

Write a five to eight (6-8) page paper in which you:

  1. Summarize the salient points of the Supreme Court case Elk Grove Unified School District v. Newdow.
  2. Discuss the levels of the court through which the case evolved before it reached the Supreme Court.
  3. Explain the decision of the Supreme Court in this case in brief.
  4. Explain the fundamental impact that the court decision in question has had on American society in general and on ethics in American society in particular. Provide a rationale for the response.
  5. Discuss whether you believe that the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance is a religious issue or a sign of respect for the United States.
  6. Discuss whether or not you think public schools should be allowed to recite the pledge.
  7. Use at least three (3) quality academic resources. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources

Inference and Interpretation, writing homework help

Inference and Interpretation
Reflect on how you sometimes form your views and perspectives regardless of data or evidence to the contrary.

Based on your readings, research, and experiences as well as your study and consideration of the Exhibit above, select and analyze one issue that is now in the national debate, on health, education, climate change, role of the US foreign policy, United Nations, undocumented workers, or unions and the minimum wage. In writing your essay, consider how your thinking impacts how you give meaning to events, social issues, or facts.

Directions
Select one issue as your topic for the essay. Refer to the following guidelines to narrow your topic.

  • Time: Limit the time span of your topic. For example, you could limit Affordable Care Act research to information from the past two years; not the debate leading up to the Act. Or, you could look at U.S. foreign policy during the 1990’s.
  • Population: Limit by age, sex, race, occupation, ethnic group or species. For example, you could limit research to how climate change affects polar bears or how the United Nations has played a role in empowering women.
  • Location: Location can help you limit by topic (and sometimes population). For example, you could examine undocumented workers in Florida or how U.S. Policy is affecting current events in Syria.
  • One Aspect: Consider just one piece of a larger subject. For example, you could look at how certain cities across the country are raising the minimum wage.

Include the following points:

  • Clarity
  • Logic
  • Justifiability
  • Profundity – your depth of knowledge on a topic
  • Reasonableness
  • Consistency

The essay is a roadmap of how your mind works. Therefore, there is no right or wrong answer. The goal is to support your critical thinking based on readings from text, articles, or discussions in class.

Requirements:

  • Your essay should be 4-5 pages.
  • Incorporate three scholarly sources that are not required or recommended readings for this course. Cite and reference your sources properly.
  • Format your essay, including all citations and references, according to the APA requirements.

Analysis Paper Assignment

COMM 120 Analysis Paper

Assignment Description

Understanding how to identify and respond to the communicative patterns of others is

necessary when one seeks to improve their interpersonal relationships. However, it is just as

important to develop the ability to understand and adjust your own patterns of communication if

you desire to become a better communicator. Therefore, in this assignment you will be required

to write a 3 to 5 page paper analyzing your own patterns of interpersonal communication. You

will identify and apply specific course concepts and/or theories from the textbook to conduct

your analysis while providing your own personal insights on how you can use this knowledge to

improve your communication skills.

This assignment is designed to get you to reflect on what you have learned about

interpersonal communication throughout the semester and to come up with a plan for how you

can improve your interactions with others. Thus, there should be two distinct parts to your paper:

1.) Your reflective analysis and 2.) Your plan for improvement. The first section, the reflective

analysis, will make up the bulk of your paper. In this section, make sure to explain what aspects

of your own interpersonal communication style you are analyzing by providing relevant

examples. In the second section, your plan for improvement, you should provide a minimum of

three specific ways you plan to improve your communication with others by using what you

have learned throughout the semester.

When completing this assignment, you will choose a minimum of three concepts from the

textbook and utilize them in your self-analysis. You may decide to analyze one specific

experience, or a small set of related experiences, thus you should home in on course

concepts/material that help articulate how you intend to improve your communication based on

these textbook concepts.

You may choose to write about topics such as: a set of work-related experiences you have

had in the past in which you did not communicate as effectively as you would have liked to (i.e.

getting into arguments, unclear communication with co-workers that resulted in mistakes being

made, being misperceived by a supervisor because of something you said or how you

communicated, etc.); your tendency to be a poor listener and how it has had a negative impact on

your relationships; a time when you failed to articulate yourself well enough and wanted to

improve the clarity of your communication with others; etc.

Since you will be choosing textbook concepts for this assignment,

you will need to

provide a reference page including in-text citations in APA style

. Your paper will be judged

according to the following criteria:

1. Your ability to support your analysis through the use of relevant examples

2. Your ability to connect classroom learning to your own patterns of communication

3. The application of appropriate communication concepts and/or terminology from lecture

or the textbook

4. The demonstrated ability to think critically about your communicative style and to create

a specific plan for improvement (quality of your writing/insights)

5. Proper grammar, spelling, and overall format

Part 8

The stage is set for your strategic goal to become a reality. Before that can happen, you’ll need to think through and map out the tasks within the project. This assignment will focus on planning out the individual aspects of the project using the project management tools that you’ve previously learned. You will be able to use Word or Excel for this assignment. (Choose whichever you’re more familiar with.) It’s important to think through the goal you’re trying to accomplish and how you’ll reach it. The more detailed you can be with your tasks, the smoother the project management cycle will go. Your submission this week should accomplish the following:

  • Create a basic chart that lists out at least 8 tasks required to complete your chosen strategic management goal and estimates on how long each will take to complete.
  • Create a Gantt chart using the tasks listed in the previous chart.
  • Create a network diagram using the tasks listed out in the previous chart.
  • Analyze your created Gantt chart and network diagram. Identify two potential issues that may be a cause for concern when the project gets underway.

Link to Library Database to find sources. http://csuglobal.libguides.com/az.php Three to Five Sources

I am attaching my Portfolio topic from the start of my portfolio project. The assignment attached is based off of this.

In Module 2, you began conducting research for your final paper examining a national/global social issue. By now, you already have a developed research topic and a working thesis statement, along with a small bibliography of resources for support.

For this Critical Thinking Assignment, you are to add threecredible sources to your original Annotated Bibliography, for a total of at least five credible sources.

Annotate all sources, using college-level writing skills and proper APA style for quoting, summarizing, and paraphrasing sources. Begin your annotated bibliography by describing your research plan at the top of the page.

Requirements:

To fulfill the research component of this assignment, you must do the following:

  • Conduct several searches using any of the databases in the Library.
  • Select three to five scholarly peer-reviewed sources from your library search that support the topics and arguments you plan to present in your Portfolio paper.

To fulfill the written component of this assignment, you must do the following:

  • Include a title page that is formatted in proper APA style. List APA-style references in alphabetical order along with your unique paragraph summaries.
  • Annotated paragraphs must be original and should not be copied from abstracts or other summaries. Format your assignment according to APA style as outlined in CSU-Global Guide to Writing & APA.
  • Your annotated bibliography should be double-spaced with one-inch margins and use a 12-point Times New Roman font.

Your annotations should contain the following elements: (annotations template linked below)

  • A summary, in your own words, of the information presented in the article.
  • Your analysis of the best use of this information for your final paper, written in your own words.
  • Identification of a possible topic sentence and/or claim the information will support.

Please respond to the following Discussion BUS 520 Week 5 LEADERSHIP AND ORGANIZATIONAL

BUS 520 Discussion Week 5 LEADERSHIP AND ORGANIZATIONAL

We have all worked in a group or team at some point in our careers. A team is brought together to achieve a common goal. The team needs to have members who have complementary skills and who are committed to a common purpose to achieve performance goals. However, teams don’t move immediately toward performing, but instead evolve over time. There are five stages of group and team development.

  1. Forming – Getting oriented and getting acquainted. High degree of uncertainty as members as they try to figure out who is in charge.
  2. Storming – Personalities start to emerge, along with roles and conflicts within the group.
  3. Norming – In the third stage conflicts are resolved, relationships developed, harmony and unity surfaces.
  4. Performing – The members concentrate on solving problems and completing the assigned task.
  5. Adjourning – Members prepare to disband. Some members may be reassigned, terminated from the group or the group is resolved.

Think about a time when you joined a new group . . . it could be at work, in a family setting or with a social group.

  • Which of the five stages was the most challenging for the group to work through, and why?
  • How might you have helped the group work through that stage differently based upon what you know now about the five stages of group and team development?

The technique of photographing the community from your perspective is called PhotoVoice. It is a popular tool used in public health and social science research. The purpose is to understand community issues from the perspective of those who live in the community, especially those who may be disadvantaged or are unable to express their opinions. Ultimately the goal is to reflect on the PhotoVoice experience and for it to serve as a catalyst for social action and policy-level change.

Determine if you will photograph Morgan State University or a local neighborhood.

Required Materials

Camera or cell phone with camera

Release form (needed for photographs that include recognizable people)

Now that you have learned how social and economic factors may shape individual health, we will explore local communities to document what resources (goods and services) and policies you believe promote health (i.e. assets such as farmers markets) or are detrimental to health (i.e. barriers such as alcohol or tobacco advertisements).

  • Take as many photographs as you would like, and choose your top 4 images. Upload your photos in a discussion thread and respond to the questions listed below.
  • Many of you will be surveying the same community and possibly sharing cameras. Remember to document images based on your own opinions and without influence from your classmates. Please complete this project independently.
  • There are no right or wrong answers, and photography skills and artistic talents are not required for this exercise.
  • If you have the opportunity, engage with community members — storekeepers, shoppers, pedestrians, people you know who live or work in the community, people of all ages and backgrounds — and ask their perceptions of the primary health issues, and assets and barriers to health in the community. Ask their permission to photograph them and record their responses. Employee Profile Case Study

Read the following employee profiles:

Employee #1

Jimmy Brown is a manager with Solomon Industries, Inc., (SII) a supply company in South Carolina. SII serves as a warehouse for other companies that deliver and store their goods using SII’s facility as temporary storage. Jimmy was born in 1955 and spent 20 years in the military. Upon retiring, he was hired as a production supervisor for SII. Originally from SC, he is the night shift supervisor working 12 hour shifts from 7:00 pm to 7:00 am Monday through Thursday supervising 12 employees. Jimmy is a traditional Baby Boomer as he grew up in the 60’s, his dad worked, his mom stayed home, and he is the oldest of three children; a brother and a sister 2 and 4 years younger, respectively. Jimmy received his bachelor of arts degree while in the military in chemical engineering. Turnover is pretty high at SII as Jimmy is constantly training new employees. He had the option of moving to the day shift but he worked nights his whole military career and likes this shift so he asked to continue working this shift. His present staff consists of 1 employee over the age of 50 and the rest of the employees range from 20-40 years of age.

Employee #2

Michael Johnson was born in 1976 in Ohio. He has a technical background graduating in 1997 in computer science and moved to SC in 2010 with his new bride. Michael’s parents divorced when he was 2 years old and he rarely saw his biological father. His mom worked two jobs almost 7 days a week until she remarried when he was 10. His step dad travelled often with his job and had two daughters from a previous marriage. Their mom died 3 years before he married Michael’s mom. Michael applied for the Information Technology position but at the last minute the position was closed because the employee decided not to leave the company so Michel took on the responsibility of being the day shift supervisor. He works 7:00 am to 7:00 pm Monday through Thursday with Solomon Industries, Inc., (SII) a supply company in South Carolina. SII serves as a warehouse for other companies that deliver and store their goods using SII’s facility as temporary storage. Turnover is not as high as his night shift counterpart, but still has some turnover. The company allows tenured employees to move to the shift they desire if positions are available. Michael manages 15 employees, 8 are over the age of 50, 2 are new employees under 21 years old, and the remaining are between 21-50 years of age.

As a manager, you are tasked with creating a 350-word performance management plan for Employee 1 and Employee 2.

  • Include how your management approach would change to fit the employees’ needs
  • Assess the approaches you would use to monitor the behavior of each employee
    • What are the legal implications?
    • How would you evaluate the effectiveness of your approach?

Leading others

Choose 1

Option #1: Leading Oneself

Fritz (2013) posits that your own effectiveness and influence with others depends on you understanding yourself. Chapter 4 addresses how leaders must lead themselves, which includes creating the right surround sound, embracing differences, determining whether you want to be liked or respected (or both), and dealing with circumstances you are given.

Reflect on each of these components of your leadership in a 3- to 4-page paper, following the APA. Using a specific leadership context in which you have participated, analyze the outcomes of your leadership. Conclude with two to three specific goals that you will set over the next six weeks of class to improve your self-knowledge so you can lead others more effectively.

Option #2: Leader Analysis

Fritz (2013) posits that your own effectiveness and influence with others starts with you understanding yourself. Chapter 4 addresses how leaders must lead themselves, which includes creating the right surround sound, embracing differences, determining whether you want to be liked or respected (or both), and dealing with circumstances you are given.

In a 3- to 4-page paper, following the APA, reflect on each of these components within the context of a current or previous leader to whom you reported. Analyze the outcomes of this person’s leadership according to Fritz’s argument about understanding oneself. Conclude with two to three specific recommendations you would make to this leader to improve his/her ability to lead others more effectively. Cite at least two scholarly sources in addition to your texts to support your ideas.
