Introduction, Thesis Statement, and Annotated Bibliography

Prepare: To help with the preparation of your annotated bibliography, review the following tutorials and resources from the Ashford Writing Center:

Reflect: Reflect back on the Week Two Discussion in which you shared with the class the global societal issue that you would like to further address. Explore critical insights that were shared by your peers and/or your instructor on the topic chosen and begin your search for scholarly sources with those insights in mind.

Write: For this assignment, review the Annotated Bibliography Formatting Guidelines (will be attached) and address the following prompts:

  • Introductory Paragraph to Topic: Refer to the Final Argumentative Essay guidelines for your topic selection. Write an introductory paragraph with at least 150 words, which clearly explains the topic, the importance of further research, and ethical implications.
  • Thesis statement: Write a direct and concise thesis statement, which will become the solution to the problem that you will argue or prove in the Week Five Final Argumentative Essay. A thesis statement should be a declarative statement that makes one point in 25 words or less. The thesis statement must appear at the end of the introductory paragraph.
  • Annotated Bibliography: Develop an annotated bibliography to indicate the quality of the sources you have read. For each annotation, you need to summarize in your own words how the source contributes to the solution of the global societal issue. Your annotation should be one to two paragraphs long (150 words or more) and fully address the purpose, content, evidence, and relation to other sources you found on this topic. The annotated bibliography must include no less than five scholarly sources that will be used to support the major points of the Final Argumentative Essay. Critical thinking skills need to be demonstrated by accurately interpreting evidence used to support various positions of the topic.

What is theory paper ?
You must submit each paper on D2L under Assessments > Assignments. Do not email me your paper—submit it on D2L. To do so, first save your paper in .doc, .docx (MS Word), or .pdf format and then attach it to the appropriate submission folder under Assessments > Assignments. If I cannot open your document, your paper will receive the grade of zero. Each paper is worth up to 100 points.
The what is theory paper’s length is 2,500 words. The what is communication paper’s length is 2,500 words. An accurate word count must be placed at the top of the first page of your paper. Failure to have an accurate word count at the very top of the first page of your paper will result in a failing grade. Your paper needs to be typed and single-spaced. Your paper should use Times New Roman 12 pin font and standard margins. In MS Word, use either the Normal or the No Spacing style (upper right on Home tab) and then change your font to Times New Roman 12 pin/size (upper left on Home tab). Please do not space between paragraphs. Indent paragraphs. Since your paper is submitted online, please do not put your name, the course, or my name at the top of your paper. 2. What is an objective approach? What is an interpretive approach?
3. What is the purpose of theory?
4. What makes an objective theory good? What makes an interpretive theory good?
5. How has theory helped guide research of interpersonal communication?
6. What (then) is theory and why is that insightful and important?

Writing in my major Draft

“Writing in My Major” Assignment

Draft for critique.

Please Use The book: Building Bridges through Writing By Trixie G. Smith & Allison D. Smith

The chapter you are supposed to use for my major writing is Chapter 9 Writing in the Healht Science

Purpose:

Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) courses attempt to analyze the types of writing done within each major and, ultimately, aid students in achieving a high level of major-specific writing skills. This approach to writer development is an important component of WAC and is usually labeled as Writing in the Disciplines (WID). The belief behind WID is as follows: the more students are able to develop major-specific writing skills, the more prepared they will be to enter the workforce within their chosen field. Your task, as a member of this class (and, consequently, of the Writing Across the Curriculum movement), is to examine the types of writing being done within your major and to develop a clear list of writing skills that graduates in your chosen major should possess upon entering the workforce.

Getting Started:

Before beginning your research, write down your current understanding of writing within your discipline.

Use these questions to guide your prewriting:

  1. What types of documents need to be produced in your major-specific classes?
  2. What types of documents are used in jobs related to your major?
  3. What are the main writing skills that students need to develop to succeed in your major?

Preparation:

Follow these steps in order to complete your investigation:

  1. Read the Table of Contents in your Building Bridges through Writing Handbook. Find the subject that most clearly represents your major and read that chapter. Take notes on the types of writing and the writing skills that the authors of this textbook mention are important for your chosen field.
  2. Find and review 2-3 syllabi from classes you’ve had in your major (if you have not had 2-3 classes in your major yet you can do an internet search for sample syllabi in your major or ask a friend/professor to view syllabi that they have used). Take notes on the type of writing assignments used in the courses and the specific writing skills needed to complete the writing assignments well. I have posted a Syllabi as an attachement.

3. Find the Program Outcomes for your specific major at NIU at the following website:

Which outcomes seem writing-specific? What types of writing does your major expect you to be familiar with upon graduation?

  1. Find a video on YouTube that features a professor or professional who discusses writing at the academic and/or professional level.

Format: Write a 3-4 page (Times New Roman, 12-point font, double spaced) paper that

describes writing in your major based on your investigation.

Your paper should include answers to the following questions, in paragraph format:

  1. What were your initial impressions of writing within your major before you started your investigation? What forms of writing and particular writing skills did you feel were important? (consult and revise the getting started activity)
  2. How did your investigation confirm/alter/reshape your initial impressions of writing in your major?
  3. What were the most common forms of writing and skills needed that were repeated throughout your source investigation? Which sources did you find the most helpful in explaining these forms or skills?
  4. What advice would you give an undergraduate student in your major about writing within your discipline? What writing skills do you feel are most necessary to develop during a course of study within your major?
  5. Be sure to include a bibliography page in the format appropriate to your major.

Criteria For Evaluation:

The final grade for your paper will be awarded based on your ability to answer the questions listed above (under “Format”).

Points will be distributed throughout the paper in the following manner:

  1. Initial impressions of writing in your major prior to investigation (15 points possible)
  2. Explanation of how investigation confirmed, altered, or reshaped your initial impressions (15 points possible)
  3. Explanation of the most common forms of writing and skills needed within your discipline that were found during your investigation, along with discussion of the most helpful sources (30 points possible)
  4. Well-thought out and applicable advice to an undergraduate student in your major about writing within your discipline and the skills needed to succeed in your field (20 points possible)
  5. Overall structure and coherence of the essay, making sure your thoughts flow from one paragraph to the next along with attention to proofreading and grammar (10 points possible)
  6. Correctly formatted bibliography for your major/discipline.

(10 points possible)

Total: 100 Points Possible

The Reflective Annotated Bibliography

Writing Assignment #2 will be a reflective annotated bibliography of 5-6 sources.

For Writing Assignment 2, the topic choice is open and up to the writer. But the focus for this paper needs to be specific. The topic for writing assignment 2 and 3 should be the same since these papers are related. The research in this assignment will be applied to writing assignment 3.

Headings are required for writing assignment 2.

Organization for the Reflective Annotated Bibliography

In this assignment you will

  1. find 5-6 articles on a theme chosen by the student.
  2. list each article in alphabetical order in APA format. In other words, you will list each on as an APA reference.
  3. write a précis, a vocabulary section, a reflection, and a quotables section after each listing. More details that explain each of these sections are provided below.

Part 1: The Précis: In this section, you will provide a descriptive summary of the material. To observe a video tutorial that takes you through the process of summarizing an article in a descriptive manner, click here.

You will want to include the author’s main claim in the article as well as any sub-claims. In addition, please include the types of evidence the author uses to support this claim, including what data/facts/evidence the author uses to justify the claims of the article. Finally, you will want to mention the interpretations that this author arrives at through the claims and evidence and the points or conclusions she presents. You may use the first-person point of view (“I”) in your précis.

Your précis for each article should be 150-200 words.

Part 2: Vocabulary: In this section, you will select key terms that were used in the article or words with which you were unfamiliar. You don’t need to include definitions of these terms; however, you should look up their definitions for your own benefit.

You should come up with 5-10 vocabulary terms for each article.

Part 3: Reflection: In this section, you will describe your opinion about what the author has stated in the article. Please state whether you agree, disagree, or agree on some points and disagree on others. You can mention any criticisms, questions, or comments you have on the author’s methods of research. In addition, include any unanswered questions you have as a result of having read the article carefully. Include items or concepts that you do not understand, information you would need to have in order to better understand the article, etc. You will, of course, use the first-person point of view (“I”) in this part of the reflective annotated bibliography.

Your reflection section for each article should be 150-200 words.

Part 4: Quotables: In this section, you will insert direct quotations from the article that you feel exemplify its claims or interpretations. You can also include sentences in which the author stated his or her claims exceptionally well. Please include page number(s) where you found the quotes. Moreover, please place quotation marks around the chosen phrase and make sure you cite the phrase verbatim.

Your quotables section for each article should contain 4-8 quotes.

Unit 3 Health Reporting and Marketing, management homework help

Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 400–600 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.

There are very few industries that have the unique economic factor in which the majority of its revenue does not come directly from the customer, but from a third party. This unique economic factor is usually referred to as a private health care insurance company. Third party payers are the commercial, governmental, and health care maintenance insurance companies that help providers manage its patient’s accounts.

To increase referrals, Krona is beginning to develop a new marketing campaign to target a new patient mix and increase revenues, something that you discussed in your last Individual Project. You have been asked by the chief financial officer (CFO) to collaborate with the marketing director and discuss the importance of having advertising materials for both the health insurance companies and the patients who receive the health care services.

  • List 3 marketing approaches you would use to target potential patients and health care insurance companies.
  • Explain what factors you used in choosing your specific marketing strategies and the purpose of each selection.
  • Find a way to be unique and to add value by bundling services.
  • Some marketing strategies may include the following:
    • Direct marketing
    • Television
    • Telemarketing
    • Market to customers and referrals

In addition, you recognize that your contribution to the organization would improve if you joined an association for health care management professional. Choose 1 association that you feel would increase your knowledge in finance, auditing, compliance, or other related area, and discuss the benefits that your affiliation with that organization would bring to Krona Hospital. Also, provide a brief history of the organization, and discuss if they offer professional certification.

The Asian American Movement: reflection

Questions/Goals for this Week:

  1. What was the political genesis for the term “Asian American,” now used widely today?
  2. What were the goals of the Asian American Movement in the late 1960s and 1970s, and how did it relate to the objectives of other movements of the time?

Required Reading:

___________

For this module, we look at how the Asian American community developed in the social foment of the 1960s and 1970s. This is a time period that has received much attention in American history for a number of reasons: in traditional narratives, it’s the culmination of the civil rights movement as reflected in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. For many it’s the association with Martin Luther King, Jr. and his fight for equality through non-violent means. In the backdrop of these actions in American though was of course international conflict in Vietnam as a part of America’s Cold War policy to support anti-communist regimes abroad, even if those regimes themselves were implicated in the suppression of political speech, human rights violations, and other forms of authoritarian government.

While more and more Americans became concerned about the United States’ campaigns abroad, there was also growing unrest within its domestic borders as well, especially when it came to the treatment of communities of color. The year 1968 was a significant milestone in that many groups became much more radicalized and vocal as a result of the political times… violence against established civil rights leaders (such as the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.), intransigence of states and local jurisdictions to adhere to federal law, and the escalation of conflict abroad.

In these tumultuous times, the readings offer a couple of perspectives from which to examine this period. First, Uyematsu’s excerpt on “Yellow Power” is a primary source document from 1969, written from the perspective of Asian American activism. Uyematsu is critical of the perceived silence and passivity of post-wartime incarceration Japanese Americans and other Asian Americans — a trait that she grounds in the trauma of a uniquely American experience of subordination, and not a cultural characteristic of the Japanese (or other Asians) in general.

In the next article, scholar Karen Umemoto looks at very specific event in the Asian American Movement — the San Francisco State College Strike — and the role Asian Americans played in effecting change in their community. Finally, Omatsu looks at the Asian American Movement and its goals and provides some food for thought as to how this applied moving forward from the 1970s. While examining both these readings, consider what the Movement objectives were at that time period, and how some of those objectives have changed or shifted in the following decades.

Global Stratification

1. What is Global Stratification? please quote from the textbook.

2. Compare and contrast World System Theory with Neocolonialism. What are some strengths and some weakness of these two theories? Please quote the textbook.

Example:

According to our textbook, Global Stratification is defined as “a system in which groups of people are divided into layers according to their relative property, power, and prestige” (231). Although, it is important to understand that this does not refer to individuals but is a way of ranking large groups of people into a hierarchy according to their relative privileges. It results from their differences in wealth, power, and prestige. It is also important to point out that some societies have more inequalities than others, but social stratification is universal. Within this society, there are four major systems: slavery, caste, estate, and class.

As defined in the textbook, World System Theory is “a theory of how economic and political connections developed and now tie the world’s countries together” (254). According to this theory, industrialization led to four groups of nations: core, semi-peripheral, peripheral, and external area. The core nations are countries that have industrialized the first and grew to be rich and powerful as well (Britain, France, Holland, and, later, Germany). The semi-peripheral nations are located around the Mediterranean and soon became trapped due to the fact that they grew dependent on trade with the core nations. The peripheral nations, or commonly known as the fringe nations, developed even less, which are the Eastern European countries that sold cash crops to the core nations. The fourth and final group, the external areas, are made up of nations that include Africa and Asia, they were “left out of the development of capitalism altogether” (255).

As for the other theory, Neocolonialism, is what took place when colonialism fell out of style. It is defined as, “the economic and political dominance of the Least Industrialized Nations by the Most Industrialized Nations” (257). It refers to the theory that existing or former economic relationships are used to maintain control of former colonies after receiving formal independence. In comparison, World Systems Theory and Neocolonialism lean towards the powerful and more industrialized nations. As the World Systems Theory gears their focus on their core nations, the countries that were industrialized first, leaving other nations, especially the external areas, astray and completely out of the development of capitalism. In similarity, Neocolonialism simply refer to the involvement of powerful countries in the affairs of less powerful countries, for instance, “the capital they need to develop their own industries goes instead as payments toward the debt, which becomes bloated with mounting interest. Keeping these nations in debt forces them to submit to trading terms dictated by the neocolonialists” (257). In this sense, Neocolonialism implies a form of economic imperialism, whereas World Systems Theory and its current expansion of capitalism has changed the relationships among the nations, which is where the contrast lies.

I find that the strengths of World Systems theory is that production and trade have become significantly interconnected that events around the globe affects all of us, and at times, the act even becomes immediate as well. A strength of Neocolonialism is what is referred to in the text, “by selling them goods on credit—especially weapons that the local elites desire so they can keep themselves in power” (257). The weakness that both theories significantly contain is the production of unequal economic relations among all nations and within the world system.

I don’t have the textbook but if you want you can easily find it online: Textbook: Sociology: A Down to Earth Approach, 13th edition–ebook,ISBN-13: 978-0134253350 .
