Create a 3–5-page directional strategy report, as if you were preparing to present your assessment to a representative panel of employee stakeholders of a health care organization.

Questions to Consider:

• What are the major categories of employee stakeholders in a health care organization of your choosing (such as executives, senior management, middle management, caregivers, maintenance, administrative support personnel, volunteers)?
• What role does the board of directors play in your health care organization?
• What are the important elements of an effective board of directors?
• What is the process your organization uses to select members?
  • How effective is that process?
• What are industry best practices for selecting board members for a health care organization?
• How well do your organization’s strategies align with its published vision, mission, and values?
• How does this organization’s environment support or hinder its alignment with its vision, mission, and values?

Analyze the relevance of the organization’s directional strategy, including its vision, mission, values, and organizational culture. The goal is to focus upon application of the concepts and new insight. Keep it brief and substantive. Note: Feel free to construct images/diagrams to summarize information where appropriate (for example, TOWS matrix…).

Complete the following:

• Review the mission, vision, and values statements of your health care organization.
• Examine how well each statement addresses the components of a directional strategy.
• Analyze the gap between the desired outcome and the actual state of the current environment.
• Analyze the organization’s directional strategy, including its vision, mission, and values.
• Examine the strategic “fit.”
  • Does the directional strategy fit the environment?
  • Is the organization headed in the right direction given the environmental assessment?
  • Does growth make sense right now or does maintaining the status quo or even contraction make better sense?
• Recommend changes you would make to ensure a foundation necessary for the current structure and strategies of the organization. Note: Support your recommendations with relevant resources from the literature.

The prevailing mindset in our society is that the thirteen colonies seceded from Great Britain and declared their independence. Historically this is exactly what happened. In modern times, we often have a tendency to sweepingly apply the mindset of independence to all the citizens of the time period. However, it is important to remember that the colonies were deeply divided over the issue of independence. Most people actually favored loyalty to Britain rather than independence. Our modern, collective interpretation of American independence is an example of the old adage, “History is written by the victors.” In order to get a well-rounded understanding of the truth, it is important that we have an understanding of as many perspectives as possible.

Answer the following questions:

1. How successful is the Shouldice Hospital? Generate a
   Profit & Loss statement using available information from the case.
   Treat each of the two operations—hospital and the surgery—separately.
2. How do you account for its successful performance?
3. Prepare a patient process flow diagram from arrival
   through surgery and determine the capacities at each stage. For this
   diagram, only indicate major points in the process, e.g., admitting,
   examination, operating room surgeries, etc. Use the actual hours of operation
   for each step in the process to determine the capacity of each step. Where
   is the bottleneck?
4. Do a detailed analysis of potential on-site capacity
   expansion alternatives (on a per week basis). Assume an average of 3.5
   days stay at the hospital for each patient, including surgery, and Sunday
   admits. This means that half the patients spend three days while the other
   half spend four days.

1) Write about how a comedian has changed your mind about or made you rethink a cultural issue. The issue or issues can be anything from politics to race to sexuality to drugs to religion to education to war to gender to love to bacon to death to language to anything that a comedian has made you reconsider.

The paper should first describe your initial position/feelings about the issue, then present your interpretation of the comedian’s point of view, and finally illustrate how it has changed your beliefs, positively or negatively from where you began.

You can use any comedian(s) you want, from class or not. If nothing else, it’s an excuse to spend hours on end trolling for stand-up clips.

2) This paper topic allows the student to become the Master for once. It’s your chance to decide what should be on the syllabus. Between now and the due date, your assignment is to watch TWO comedians with similar thematic elements on your own, or with friends and family… or a pet of whom you’re particularly fond. Once you watch them, imagine you’re responsible for leading a discussion about them. What would you impart to your students about humor, stand-up, and any specific issues that these performers represent? It is important that you actually watch the comedians you discuss, because ideally, this class will have changed the way you think about comedy you’ve seen 20 times. You’re getting college credit to watch funny people: appreciate that, don’t take it for granted.

Question 1 (300 words): In modern American culture we encounter history in a wide variety of ways. We see it in memes like the ones above. Many people associate it with the History Channel even though their programming seems to focus a good bit more on things like “swamp people” than on anything you might call history. And we hear it mentioned quite often in by elected officials and those seeking election to office.

In this discussion, I’d like to hear your thoughts about the place of history in American culture and society. Do you think that Americans value knowledge of the past and informed consideration of it? Why or why not?

Question 2 (300 words): For this discussion, carefully read the first of the two Voices of Freedom primary sources on page 660 of the Give Me Liberty! textbook. (This week we’re only looking at the one source.) This source presented here is text from one of Franklin Roosevelt’s Fireside Chats, radio addresses that he broadcast to the whole nation. In your response, explain how you think he defines liberty and the role that government should play in securing it for the American people. In addition, spell out how you see these ideas fitting with FDR’s New Deal programs during the Depression Era.

In your response you should use evidence from the primary sources to prove your point. Typically this requires a three-step process of making your assertions about the issue, giving the reader evidence that proves your point (usually by providing a brief quotation from the text), and then fully explaining to the reader why the evidence proves your point.
